Download or read book Far from Home written by Rosie Ayliffe and published by Random House Australia. This book was released on 2021-03-30 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: British mother Rosie Ayliffe thought her 21-year-old daughter, Mia, would be safe travelling around Australia on a gap year. But Mia wanted to extend her visa and in order to do that needed to find 88 days of work on a farm - a requirement that would lead to catastrophic events. Four short days after Mia moved to a hostel in Queensland to take a job on a sugarcane farm, she was brutally killed. Faced with every parent's worst nightmare, Rosie travelled to Australia to retrieve Mia's body. From the moment she landed, however, she started to hear stories about the terrible treatment of young workers like Mia - stories of exploitation, sexual harassment, rape. Mia was Rosie's only child and she brought her up as a single parent. Her death was traumatic and life-changing. In Rosie's memoir, she describes movingly how she has found the strength to come to terms with devastating loss, drawing on inspiration from her daughter's short life. She also explains how she has become the driving force behind an international campaign to press for change to the 88 days system. Part exposé of the dangers facing backpackers in Australia, part call to arms, ultimately Far from Home is an inspiring and heartfelt story of a mother's love for her daughter and her fight to protect others from suffering a similar tragedy.

Download or read book Return to Calvary written by Effie Katherine Dix Ford and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2010-08-04 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Return to Calvary is a collection of short stories and poems my grandmother hand wrote many years ago prior to her death in 1981. The stories tell of her life and people who made an impact on her while growing up in the early 1900s in a little town on the eastern shore, Crisfield, Maryland. Crisfield holds a special place in my heart and always will. What our family affectionately refers to as Calvary was actually our Aunt Sallies home place and in our hearts, it always will be. A place where to this day, Aunt Sallie resides in our familys gravesite. Return to Calvary has been created to share how different and wonderful growing up in the 1900s in Crisfield really was. There is no doubt that it will be treasured by all who read it.

Book Synopsis The Politics of Fashion in Eighteenth-Century America by : Kate Haulman
Download or read book The Politics of Fashion in Eighteenth-Century America written by Kate Haulman and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2011-08-01 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In eighteenth-century America, fashion served as a site of contests over various forms of gendered power. Here, Kate Haulman explores how and why fashion--both as a concept and as the changing style of personal adornment--linked gender relations, social order, commerce, and political authority during a time when traditional hierarchies were in flux. In the see-and-be-seen port cities of Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and Charleston, fashion, a form of power and distinction, was conceptually feminized yet pursued by both men and women across class ranks. Haulman shows that elite men and women in these cities relied on fashion to present their status but also attempted to undercut its ability to do so for others. Disdain for others' fashionability was a means of safeguarding social position in cities where the modes of dress were particularly fluid and a way to maintain gender hierarchy in a world in which women's power as consumers was expanding. Concerns over gendered power expressed through fashion in dress, Haulman reveals, shaped the revolutionary-era struggles of the 1760s and 1770s, influenced national political debates, and helped to secure the exclusions of the new political order.

Book Synopsis How To Do Things With Logic by : C. Grant Luckhardt
Download or read book How To Do Things With Logic written by C. Grant Luckhardt and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2014-02-25 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past 15 years a host of critical thinking books have appeared that teach students to find flaws in the arguments of others by learning to detect a number of informal fallacies. This book is not in that tradition. The authors of this book believe that while students learn to become vicious critics, they still continue to make the very mistakes they criticize in others. Thus, this book has adopted the approach of teaching the construction of good arguments first and then introducing criticism as a secondary skill. Moreover, the emphasis of the book is not on learning to name fallacies, but on being able to identify weaknesses in an argument so as to be able to construct an effective critique of that argument. The book is accompanied by a workbook featuring a wealth of examples to help students acquire the material.
