Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the iconic presence of second chances in everyday life. David Newman explores its various iterations in popular culture, commercial marketplaces, religion, intimate relationships, education, criminal justice, and human bodies. He analyzes how this concept—as a cultural aspiration, driver of policy, and lived personal experience—has become part and parcel of our individual sense of self and our collective national identity. While the rhetoric of redemption is familiar and ubiquitous, Newman uncovers the costs and constraints of second chances, paying particular attention to the factors that affect judgments of deservedness. Informed by an array of data sources including personal interviews, mission statements of nonprofit recovery agencies, images in popular culture, stories from the news, plot summaries of novels, and scriptural texts, Newman frames the second chance experience as the quintessential cultural paradox: a concept that simultaneously represents the pinnacle of our shared hopes for renewal and our deepest suspicions about the intransigence of human nature.

Book excerpt: Just when life seemed rosy and sun was shining, he sustained a severe spinal cord injury in July 2019 following an operation, which left him with paralysis of both legs, a non-functioning right hand and long stay in the hospital, eventually leading to a forced medical retirement from his medical career and a wheelchair in place of a sports car. He had to undergo multiple operations but is now permanently disabled. Two months after his injury he was also diagnosed of cancer of the Thyroid for which he needed further operations. With a family so young he could not afford to give up yet, so he had to re-learn walking (limited distance with crutches), writing, holding knife, fork and lots of other daily routines but most importantly had to retrain his mind to accept the new normal. However, these adverse life changing experiences made him into a person of faith, gratitude and inspiration. Undeterred by the unexpected personal, professional, and financial implications of his physical limitations, and despite the unexpected end of his dream career, just months after emergency surgery Bhaskar completed an MBA followed by an MSc in addition to his medical degrees. At the same time, he continued with his entrepreneurial challenges. His intuition became a mantra for decrypting life’sclues. As a motivational speaker, he now urges others to tap into their own inner voice. In his own words, through his spiritual evolution, the adversities made him a ‘better man’ Poorer financially but richer in experiences of life he is now a voice for the disabled and has written the book 'The Second Chance in Life' as an honest reflection of his life experiences to motivate people that every adversity can still be turned into an opportunity. That it is important to be filled with gratitude and appreciation for all the things that we take for granted. He also blogs on his website www.thesecondchanceinlife.com In ‘The Second Chance in Life’ this self-confessed workaholic acknowledges the challenges and miracles that have influenced his life and, in a bravely honest style, shares how even your darkest days can be a springboard for positivity. How important acceptance and resilience is in turning adversities into opportunities. This book also shows the need of appreciating every small thing in life and not to take anything for granted. With various real-life examples and practical strategies, this book is an inspirational work for self-help and motivation. The book is to be launched worldwide on Amazon on 21st April 2022 and will be available to pre-order soon. What the universe throws at us we cannot control but how we react to these life's curve balls define who we are.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was an acid Test for Rohit Sharma when he was asked to lead Team India in absence of regular captain Virat Kohli. Make no mistake, Rohit Sharma has been a fantastic leader for Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League but captaining Men in Blue is altogether a different job and if u fail, there is no second chance. Rohit must have felt the same when Sri Lanka trounced India in the first ODI. It was a collective failure with fingers being pointed at Rohit Sharma and cricket fanatics started missing Virat Kohli. I was amazed to see Rohit Sharma’s response in the second match. Batting like a true star, he clobbered Lankan bowlers to all corners, hitting fours and sixes at will. The rate at which he scored his runs was enough to shell shock his rivals. The ongoing Ashes has been a fantastic one for Australia, giving no chance to England, who are like kids playing cricket for the first time in their respective careers. A lot was expected when England left for Australia, considering the hostile rivalry between two countries. But, it has become a one sided affair with Australia leading five-match series 3-0 and a whitewash is on the cards. Senior English pros have found life miserable in front of the wicket, be it any batsman or bowler. There is more to read from cricket in this issue…

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents unique semi-autobiographical narratives by leading social work educators and practitioners in India who have done innovative work in the field of child-centred social work (CSW). The practitioners narrate their career journeys and contributions to research, policy, and practice in this field, discuss innovations, achievements, and impact of the work done, and share reflections on the challenges faced, lessons learnt, and the way forward. The volume provides valuable insights into the indigenisation of CSW education and practice and offers suggestions towards developing effective CSW. The authors draw attention towards the need for expansion of preventive service systems for children in the family, community, and school settings, as well as support to and replication of the innovative sociolegal service projects, in coordination with reforms in the justice system to ensure child rights, and human resource planning for child-centred social workers. They also propose promoting CSW education in institutions of social work education to strengthen linkages between theory, research, policy, and practice, and creating a national association for child-centred social workers to build synergy between social work practitioners and educators. The book will be useful to policy makers, educators, students, and practitioners of social work, child development, and child rights. It will also be useful for CSW training institutions and counsellors in schools and government and voluntary organisations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did a new, irresistible brand of television emerge from the Lebanese Civil War (1975–91) to conquer the Arab region in the satellite era? What role did seductive news anchors, cool language teachers, superheroes, and gossip magazines play in negotiating a modern relationship between television and audiences? How did the government lose its television monopoly to sectarian militias? Pretty Liar tells the untold story of the coevolution of Lebanese television and its audience, and the ways in which the Civil War of 1975–91 influenced that transformation. Based on empirical data, Khazaal explores the rise of language and gender politics in Lebanese television and the storm of controversy during which these issues became a referendum on television’s relevance. This groundbreaking book challenges the narrow focus on present-day satellite television and social media, offering the first account of how broadcast television transformed media legitimacy in the Arab world. With its analysis of news, entertainment, and educational shows from Télé Liban and LBC, novels, periodicals, and popular culture, Pretty Liar demonstrates how television became a site for politics and political resistance, feminism, and the cradle of the postwar Lebanese culture. The history of television in Lebanon is not merely a record of corporate technology but the saga of a people and their continuing demand for responsive media during times of civil unrest.
