Book excerpt: This new anthology of poems, favourites from the nation's longest-running and best-loved request programme for verse, moves with the seasons, following the turning year from John Clare's 'pale splendour of the winter sun' to John Keats's 'Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness', by way of Larkin's 'young-leafed June' and Gerard Manley Hopkins' 'glassy peartree leaves and blooms' when 'Nothing is so beautiful as Spring'. As the year changes, so we change with it. Since time out of mind our daily lives have been shaped and directed by the seasons, and it is here that we find poems about harvest and hardship, growth and new life, the warmth of the life-giving sun, Christmas and the closing of the year. Poetry Please: Seasonal Poems is a vital and generous gathering to treasure.

Book excerpt: My name is Keri M. McLeroy. I'm the oldest of 3 girls and I'm a Georgia native, born and raised. I've been told for many years now that I should publish my poems. I've been writing for at least 18 years and though it's taking me this long to actually do anything with what I've written, I'm now giving it a shot. I chose "The Season: Poetry of the Heart" because of the different types of poems there are. There are poems that talk of love, friendship, pain and self-doubt. Poems that just talk about life, or the natural beauty that there is in life. Poems that even talk about Christ. The poems themselves can help with many cases because though they are my writings the thought behind poetry can always be the case for anyone and everyone. I know because I've gotten feedback on quite a few of these poems that they can hold different meanings. All hold a special place in my heart, though I would have to say "Strength to Surpass" is probably one that holds the most due to it being for me, my battle with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome but can stand for all sorts of health issues.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For thousands of years, India has excelled at erotic love poetry, and the genius of its devotional poetry often harnesses great energy and mystical insight. It is in fact often hard to tell whether the poets are offering poems of spiritual longing using the garment of love poetry, or writing erotic poems in the guise of devotion. Perhaps, in a country where erotic sculpture routinely ornaments its many temples and the gods are known for their explosive sexuality, this question has little meaning to these remarkable writers. In their devotional traditions, eroticism and mysticism seem inseparable. This wonderful selection spans 2,500 years, and includes work originally sung or recited by their well–known bards: Kabir, Mirabai, Lal Ded, Vidyapati and Tagore. There are also poems from the Upanishad, from ancient Sanskrit poetry and Punjab folk lyrics. The poets have largely emerged from the ranks of the dispossessed: leather workers, refuse collectors, maidservants, women, & orphans. Their vision is of a democratic society in which all voices count, much like American gospel and blues, Shaker songs, or the grand vision of Walt Whitman. Often they faced persecution for speaking candidly, or daring to speak of spiritual matters at all. The notes include profiles of these legendary lives. Several of these poets simply vanished, absorbed into a deity, or disappeared in a flash of purple lightening. A few produced miracles—most of them have clouds of mystery around them. Andrew Schelling has drawn on the work of 24 other translators, including Ezra Pound, Robert Bly, W. S. Merwin, Jane Hirschfield and Denise Levertov, to build what will be the finest anthology of India's erotic and spiritual poetry for the general read ever assembled.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tilt Torn Away from the Seasons imagines a human mission to Mars, a consequence of Earth's devastation from climate change and natural disaster. As humans begin to colonize the planet, history inevitably repeats itself. Dystopian and ecopoetic, this collection of poetry examines the impulse and danger of the colonial mindset, and the ways that gendered violence and ecological destruction, body and land, are linked. "This time we'll form more carefully," one voice hopes in "Ecopoiesis: The Terraforming." "We've started on empty / plains. We'll vaccinate. We'll make the new deal fair." But the new planet becomes a canvas on which the trespasses of the American Frontier are rehearsed and remade. Featuring a multiplicity of narratives and voices, this book presents the reader with sonnet crowns, application forms, and large-scale landscape poems that seem to float across the field of the page. With these unusual forms, Rogers also reminds us of previous exploitations on our own planet: industrial pollution in rural China, Marco Polo's racist accounts of the Batak people in Indonesia, and natural disasters that result in displaced refugees. Striking, thought-provoking, and necessary, The Tilt Torn Away from the Seasons offers a new parable for our modern times.
