Book excerpt: "Seasoned to the Country" brings together the details of slavery in the life of one of the most famous founding fathers, Benjamin Franklin.Franklinstarted life as a poor boy, receiving only two years of education before starting to work at age ten. When he opened his print shop, he hired an indentured servant, and advertised slaves for sale and runaway servants and slaves for capture. After he became married, he adopted the local practice of relying on slave labor in his home. By the end of his life,Franklincontributed funds to establish the first all-black church inPennsylvania, and established a loan program for young businessmen, which was not limited to whites. The story of Franklin's struggle with slavery illuminates the national character, and provides a good comparison with Southern political leaders in the colonial period. The book includes a section on slave exploitation and genocidal mentality, a selected annotated bibliography of slavery in the North and slave narratives, and a list of black appearances, uprisings, laws and codes from 1513 to 1865.

Book excerpt: Collected here in this short volume, Benjamin Franklin on Immigration to America, Slavery, and Other Papers Descriptive of Early America, are eight short pieces written by Franklin during the later years of his life. The first three articles were written and first published around 1784 while Franklin was in residence in France. The later four articles are among the last public statements Franklin made before his death in Philadelphia in 1790. Far from being the words of a worn-out man facing a decline in his mental capabilities, they reveal Franklin at his finest. Fellow Founding Father Benjamin Rush commented that Franklin in his final years was "as cheerful as a young man of twenty-five, his conversation full of the wisdom and experience of mellow old age, the evening of his life was marked by the same activity of his moral and intellectual powers which distinguished its meridian." To the end of his life, Franklin maintained an optimistic view toward human nature. The goodness he saw in mankind was no different in Negroes or Indians than in whites; he believed his fellow scientists and politicians no better than farmers and tradesmen. He lived and died as a truly virtuous citizen, as close as any to achieving the full potential of the human spirit. These views, and his vision for the country he worked so hard to establish, shine through in these eight papers.

Book excerpt: This book addresses key problems regarding Swiftian thought and satire, analyzing the inspirational cultural legacy which generations of writers, thinkers, and satirists have recurrently relied upon since the Enlightenment. Section One deals with the eighteenth century and the topics of truth, falsehood and madness. Section Two focuses on two film adaptations of Gulliver’s Travels as well as on allusions to Swiftian satire during the US Enlightenment and in post-racial America. Section Three looks at the politics of language, politeness, and satire within translation, and Section Four dwells upon the process of reading Swift in the age of post-truth and Brexit. It will be of interest to students and scholars of eighteenth-century literature and culture, modern-day politics as well as to those interested in satire, science fiction, and film adaptations of literary works.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Pulitzer Prize-winning history of the mistreatment of black Americans. In this 'precise and eloquent work' - as described in its Pulitzer Prize citation - Douglas A. Blackmon brings to light one of the most shameful chapters in American history - an 'Age of Neoslavery' that thrived in the aftermath of the Civil War through the dawn of World War II. Using a vast record of original documents and personal narratives, Blackmon unearths the lost stories of slaves and their descendants who journeyed into freedom after the Emancipation Proclamation and then back into the shadow of involuntary servitude thereafter. By turns moving, sobering and shocking, this unprecedented account reveals these stories, the companies that profited the most from neoslavery, and the insidious legacy of racism that reverberates today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who are we, and where do we come from? The fundamental drive to answer these questions is at the heart of Finding Your Roots, the companion book to the hit PBS documentary series. As scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. clearly demonstrates, the tools of cutting-edge genomics and deep genealogical research now allow us to learn more about our roots and look further back in time than ever before. In the second season, Gates's investigation takes on the personal and genealogical histories of more than twenty luminaries, including Ken Burns, Stephen King, Derek Jeter, Governor Deval Patrick, Valerie Jarrett, and Sally Field. As Gates interlaces these moving stories of immigration, assimilation, strife, and success, he provides practical information for amateur genealogists just beginning archival research on their own families' roots and details the advances in genetic research now available to the public. The result is an illuminating exploration of who we are, how we lost track of our roots, and how we can find them again.
