Book excerpt: This report summarizes the results of measurements of the total CO[sub 2] concentration and CO[sub 2] partial pressure obtained aboard the U.S. Research Icebreaker Nathaniel B. Palmer during two oceanographic expeditions in the Pacific sector of the Southern Ocean, including the Bellingshausen, Amundsen and Ross Seas. These expeditions were undertaken during the austral summer (February-April, NBP94-02) and late winter (September-October, NBP94-05) of 1994 to document the magnitude of seasonal variabilities in the oceanic CO[sub 2]. The hydrographic data including the temperature, salinity, density, and the concentrations of dissolved oxygen, nitrate, phosphate and silicate were obtained by participating members of the expedition and are listed along with the CO[sub 2] data in Appendix 2 of this report. The surface water pCO[sub 2] data obtained during the summer months in 1992 and 1994 have been combined to assess the direction of net sea-air CO[sub 2] flux over the Pacific sector of the high latitude Southern Ocean. Although the sea-air pCO[sub 2] values range between+35 uatm and -185 uatm (in the Ross Sea area), the Southern Ocean area south of about 66[degrees]S between 70[degrees]W and 165[degrees]E appears to be a moderate to strong sink for atmospheric CO[sub 2].

Book excerpt: This report describes the progress made during the six-month period between December 1, 1993, when this grant was awarded, and May 1, 1994. The major aim of this investigation is to measure the distribution of the total CO2 concentration and pCO2 in seawater in the Pacific sector of the extreme Southern Ocean as far south as 78°S. The areas investigated include the continental shelf areas in the Ross, Amundsen and Bellingshausen Seas ad the off-shore deep water areas as far north as 67°S. The measurements were made aboard the R/VIB Nathaniel B. Palmer between February 14, 1994 and April 5, 1994, and the preliminary results are briefly described in this report. This expedition constitutes the first of a pair expeditions. The first is designed investigate oceanic CO2 sink/source conditions during the austral summer The second expedition, which is designed for the following winter, has been scheduled for September, 1994.

Book excerpt: The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is the leading international body for assessing the science related to climate change. It provides policymakers with regular assessments of the scientific basis of human-induced climate change, its impacts and future risks, and options for adaptation and mitigation. This IPCC Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate is the most comprehensive and up-to-date assessment of the observed and projected changes to the ocean and cryosphere and their associated impacts and risks, with a focus on resilience, risk management response options, and adaptation measures, considering both their potential and limitations. It brings together knowledge on physical and biogeochemical changes, the interplay with ecosystem changes, and the implications for human communities. It serves policymakers, decision makers, stakeholders, and all interested parties with unbiased, up-to-date, policy-relevant information. Book excerpt: This report summarizes the results of CO[sub 2] and associated hydrographic measurements made along the WOCE S-4P section located near 67[degrees]S between 73[degrees]W and 172[degrees]E in the Pacific sector of the Southern Ocean. The expedition was carried out aboard the Russian Research Ship[open-quotes]Akademik IOFFE[close-quotes] in the period February 14 through April 6, 1992. The total CO[sub 2] concentration and pCO[sub 2] in a total of about 1290 water samples were determined using a coulometer for total CO[sub 2] and an equilibrator/gas chromatograph system for pCO[sub 2]. Surface water samples were analyzed at all the 113 hydrographic occupied. Complete or partial profiles were obtained at 58 stations. In addition, a total of 172 determinations were made at sea for 62 bottles of the Standard Reference Solution (Batch No. 7), yielding an average value of 1927 5[+-]1.8 umol/kg. This compares with the SIO manometric value of 1925.74[+-]0.74 umol/kg (9 determinations). The data listed in this report have not been corrected for this discrepancy.

Book excerpt: Extreme weather and climate events, interacting with exposed and vulnerable human and natural systems, can lead to disasters. This Special Report explores the social as well as physical dimensions of weather- and climate-related disasters, considering opportunities for managing risks at local to international scales. SREX was approved and accepted by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) on 18 November 2011 in Kampala, Uganda.

Book excerpt: This report summarizes the results of carbon dioxide and associated hydrographic measurements made during the oceanographic expedition, TUNES/2, aboard the R/V Thomas Washington in the central South Pacific Ocean. During the 40 day expedition, the total carbon dioxide concentration in 1000 seawater samples were determined using a coulometer system and the pCO2 in 940 seawater samples were determined using an equilibrator/gas chromatograph system. The alkalinity values in 900 water samples were computed using these measurements. In addition, 156 coulometric measurements were made for the Certified Reference Solutions (Batch No. 6) and yielded a mean value of 2303.2 +or- 1.5umol/kg. The chemical characteristics for the major water masses have been determined.

Final Technical Report, February 15, 1990--July 31, 1995 written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowledge can be gained about the fluxes and storage of carbon in natural systems and their relation to climate by detecting temporal and spatial patterns in atmospheric CO2. When patterns in its 13C/12C isotopic ratio are included in the analysis, there is also a basis for distinguishing organic and inorganic processes. The authors systematically measured the concentration and 13C/12C ratio of atmospheric CO2 to produce time series data essential to reveal these temporal and spatial patterns. To pursue the significance of these patterns further, the result also involved measurements of inorganic carbon in sea water and of CO2 in air near growing land plants. The study was coordinated with a study of the same title concurrently funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). The study called for continued atmospheric measurements at an array of ten stations from the Arctic Basin to the South Pole. Air was collected in flasks brought back to the laboratory for analysis, except at Mauna Loa. Observatory, Hawaii, where continuous measurements were also carried out.
