Book excerpt: he overall goal of this research was to characterize movement and habitat usage of the varying life-history strategies of Columbia River redband rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss gairdneri) present within the Sanpoil River basin on the reservation of the Colville Confederated Tribes throughout spawning and overwintering. Scientists with the Ecology Group of the Battelle-Pacific Northwest Division conducted the work over a 3-year period in cooperation with the Fish and Wildlife Department of the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation (CTCR).

Book excerpt: "Construction of dams dramatically alters the hydrology of rivers, influencing a wide variety of water quality characteristics directly impacting fish species. These physical alterations will interact with increasing temperatures, due to climate change, reducing thermal habitat for cold-water fish species. Rainbow Trout are sensitive to changes in their habitat and prefer water temperatures

Book excerpt: The threat of deteriorating habitats and a loss of biodiversity make this reference work on the freshwater fishes of British Columbia more necessary than ever before. Eighty-one comprehensive species accounts aid accurate identification and consist of an illustration, the scientific and common names of the fish, its distinguishing characteristics, taxonomic comments, geographic distribution, a life-history summary, a habitat-use summary, and conservation comments. The book is a critical resource for biologists, naturalists, management and conservation officers, anglers, and members of the public who are concerned about our natural heritage.

Book excerpt: Potamodromous Rainbow Trout are an important ecological and recreational resource in freshwater systems of Alaska, and increased human development, hydroelectric projects, declining Pacific salmon stocks, and climate change may threaten their populations. We used aerial and on-the-ground telemetry tracking, field-measured and remotely-sensed aquatic habitat characteristics, snorkel surveys, and resource selection and occupancy models to characterize seasonal movements and habitat use of adult Rainbow Trout (>400 mm FL) at multiple spatial and temporal scales across the large (31,221 km2) and complex Susitna River basin of southcentral Alaska during 2003-2004 and 2013-2014. We found that trout overwintered in mainstem habitats near tributary mouths from November to April. After ice-out in May, trout ascended tributaries up to 51 km to spawn, and afterward moved downstream to lower tributary reaches to intercept egg and flesh subsidies provided by spawning salmon in July and August. Trout transitioned back to mainstem overwintering habitats at the onset of autumn when salmon spawning activity waned. Fidelity to tributary of capture varied across seasons, but was high in three out of four drainages. Different habitat characteristics influenced Rainbow Trout habitat use during each season, including stream gradient and sinuosity in the winter, substrate suitability and sinuosity during spawning, mean annual flow during the pre-salmon feeding season, and Chinook salmon spawning potential after the arrival of adult salmon in freshwater. We found that during the ice-free feeding season trout responded to fine-scale (channel unit) characteristics rather than more coarse-scale (stream reach) variables. Weekly movements were significantly longer when spawning salmon were present compared to pre-arrival. We found no difference in movements and habitat use for a subset of fish for which sex was identified using genetic analysis. However, the observed sex ratio was heavily female-biased, which contrasts with what has been observed in other non-anadromous salmonid populations. As most trout undertake extensive movements within and among tributaries and make use of a variety of seasonal habitats to complete their life histories, it will be critical to take a broad and multiscale approach to their management in light of anticipated future land use and climate change.

Book excerpt: Radiotelemetry was used to study the seasonal movements and habitat use of adult westslope cutthroat trout Oncorhynchus clarki lewisi in Roberts Creek and Rail Creek, headwater tributaries of the John Day River, Oregon, from September 2000 to December 2001. The objectives were to (1) describe adult cutthroat trout life history in headwater streams by comparing seasonal movement patterns, and (2) assess seasonal habitat selection by comparing habitat use to availability. For seasonal comparison, only fish that survived with an active transmitter throughout winter, spring, and summer were used in the analysis. Sample size was 17 (mean fork length, 241mm) on Roberts Creek and 9 (mean fork length, 252 mm) on Rail Creek. In winter and summer, radiotagged fish were relatively sedentary on both Roberts Creek (median home ranges, 35 and 104 m, respectively) and Rail Creek (median home ranges, 104 and 112 m). In spring, 65% of fish in both streams moved over 100 m upstream to spawn; upstream movements were as long as 1,138 m (median, 271 m) on Roberts Creek and as long as 3,771 m (median, 311 m) on Rail Creek. Postspawning movements downstream were common; 82% of fish on Roberts Creek and 57% on Rail Creek showed homing behavior, returning in summer to the same channel unit they inhabited in winter. Fish length was positively correlated to total movement distance in spring on Roberts Creek but not on Rail Creek. Over 86% of the surface area of both creeks consisted of fast-water channel units. Instream large wood created the majority of habitat heterogeneity in both streams and radiotagged cutthroat trout were strongly associated with large wood pools throughout the year. Plunge pools were positively selected throughout the year on both streams. Headwater-resident populations of cutthroat trout are often considered nonmigratory; however, these radiotagged fish showed fluvial migratory behavior. These results demonstrate that habitat heterogeneity and connectivity are important life history requirements for fluvial headwater resident cutthroat trout.

Book excerpt: Redband trout density was examined in three forested streams in central Oregon at two scales, pool channel unit and microhabitat. Two streams were in roadless areas and one was in a "highly managed" watershed. At the larger spatial scale, trout displayed a seasonal shift in habitat use from early to late summer. There was a positive correlation between trout density and pool structural complexity during summer base flow. The association was intensified throughout the summer as stream flow continued to drop. The structural complexity of each pool was quantified using an index integrating structural variability and depth. Twenty-two pools were divided into microhabitats, or pool subunits with similar characteristics using a qualitative classification scheme describing different structural elements comprising the pool habitat. Microhabitat was partitioned between fry and older trout throughout the summer: Fry generally used stream margins, backwaters, and shallow areas; whereas, trout one year and older used deep areas (depth greater that 0.5 m) and cover associated with substrate and wood. The use of cover by trout one year and older doubled from June to August. This change in use was coupled with the increased association with structural complexity at the channel unit scale. The large substrate and wood that provided cover also increased the structural complexity of the pool. As trout increased their use of cover, their densities increased in more complex pools. Man-made log weir pools in a simplified stream were evaluated for their structural complexity and compared to the shallow natural pools in the same reach. Log weir pools had greater average depth, but were less complex than natural pools, and could maintain a similar density of trout. The structural complexity in natural pools appears to compensate for their shallow depth. Log weir pools enhanced with placement of a rootwad supported higher densities of trout. Addition of a rootwad provided microhabitats associated with cover that were lacking in weir pools without other structures added. When using instream construction to create pool habitat, complex structure that provides microhabitats associated with cover is more effective at holding higher densities of fish under late summer low flow conditions.
