Book excerpt: Age-specific patterns of photosynthate allocation in leaves were investigated for two chaparral shrubs, Adenostoma fasciculatum and Ceanothus greggii, in five stands of various ages (i.e., years since the previous fire). Branches of shrubs were labeled with 14CO2, and seasonal allocation of 14C-labeled photosynthate to storage, defense, metabolic, and structural compounds was followed. Age-specific allocation patterns were found only in the spring, when older shrubs showed a reduced allocation of photosynthate within leaves to storage compounds. Older shrubs may be less able than younger shrubs to allocate photosynthate to storage compounds when demands on photosynthate for growth are high. This pattern indicates that there may be some physiological basis for the observation of chaparral "senescence." The influence of this "senescence" on postfire sprouting was investigated by quantifying the proportion of standing dead biomass in A. fasciculatum, as well as other shrub structural characteristics, before an experimental burn. After the burn, sprout production during the first postfire season was determined and correlated with prefire structural characteristics. Shrubs that had high proportions of dead biomass before the fire tended to show less postfire sprout production per unit prefire shrub size. Additionally, shrubs which were large before the fire tended to be large after the fire. Photosynthate allocation to shoots and roots was investigated for seedlings of both species. For seedlings of C. greggii, increased proportional allocation of labeled photosynthate belowground was always accompanied by an increase in the root:shoot ratio. But, A. fasciculatum seedlings, during the second season of growth, showed an increase in the proportional allocation of labeled photosynthate to roots which was not manifested as an increase in the root:shoot ratio. Seedlings of A. fasciculatum, a sprouting shrub, may be accumulating photosynthate belowground as nonstructural carbohydrates necessary to support eventual postfire sprouting. Seedlings of C. greggii, an obligate seeding species, did not appear to have this constraint. Book excerpt: Global change contributes to drastic shifts in vegetation composition resulting in changes in ecosystem processes across the world. One important example is plant invasion, which often leads to vegetation community type conversion, such as conversion from native shrubland to invasive grassland. Chaparral, California's most pervasive vegetation type, has recently undergone invasion. The shift from evergreen chaparral shrubs to invasive grassland will have cascading effects on ecosystem services. The overarching goal of this research is to understand water use, root and fungal dynamics of invaded chaparral communities that may inform restoration efforts. My first chapter examines how differences in root development relate to soil-water dynamics between a chaparral shrub and an invasive grass. I explored above- and below-ground strategies in concert of a native chaparral shrub and an invasive grass species in southern California using soil moisture sensors, manual minirhizotron imagery, stable isotopes, sap flux sensors and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). I found that the invasive grass species depleted soil moisture and produced longer roots earlier than the native shrub. Depletion of soil moisture earlier by E. calycina suggests that invasive grasses could accelerate the onset of the summer drought in chaparral systems, assuring their persistence following invasion. My second chapter examines how invasion and nitrogen deposition structure composition of fungal communities. I found that invasive grasses had a lower richness and relative abundance of symbiotic fungi compared to native shrubs. My third chapter explores how invasive-conditioned soils affect the growth of chaparral shrub seedlings and associated fungal communities and I found that native inoculation produced a more diverse fungal symbiont community. Chapter four aims to detect if invasive grass water-use strategies are detrimental to shrub seedling success, and found that invasive removal positively affected the establishment of native shrub seedlings and seedling mortality, which increased alongside invasive cover. Overall, my dissertation demonstrates that competition between invasive and native plants as well as shifts in fungal communities contributes to invasive grass persistence and shows how joining tools and perspectives from diverse fields can provide a holistic look at system responses to change.

Modem studies on these systems date from the work of Ray Specht, who studied the dynamics of the heath vegetation of south ern Australia. The results of these studies first appeared in 1957 (Specht and Rayson, 1957) and were summarized in 1973 (Specht, 1973). Specht followed this detailed work, which pointed to the central role of nutrients in limiting the productivity of the Australian heath, with a general comparison of the structural features of woody plant communities in mediterranean type ecosystems of Australia, southern France, and southern California (Specht, 1969a,b). The comparative studies emphasized remark able convergent features of these ecosystems, particularly in relation to structural features affecting primary production. Naveh (l967) also did comparative studies focusing on grassland types that occur in the mediterranean climatic zones of Califor nia and IsraeL About this same time, independent studies by Mooney and Dunn (1970 a,b) and Mooney et al. (1970) made preliminary structural and functional comparisons of the vegetations of mediterranean type ecosystems in California and Chile in an at tempt to derive an evolutionary model explaining the basis of their convergent natures. Much of the knowledge of these ecosystems up to 1973 was summarized in volume 7 of Ecological Studies, Medite"anean Type Ecosystems: Origin and Structure (di Castri and Mooney, 1973). This volume builds on its series predecessor in many ways.

It also determines the degree to which ecological principles, derived from research on particular populations, communities or ecosystems, are generally valid, and hence also to what extent resource management principles are general. To quote Di Castri and Mooney (1973): "In effect, in order to assess the transfer of technology, it is essential to know to what extent information acquired from studying one particular ecosystem is applicable to another ecosystem of the same type but situated in a different location. " The five relatively small, isolated, mediterranean-climate zones of the earth, each with its distinct fauna and flora, have provided the ideal testing grounds for this theory. A heritage of precisely focused ecosystems research has resulted, beginning with the international comparative analyses conducted by Specht (l969a, b) but with antecedents in earlier studies in South Australia (Specht and Rayson 1957, Specht 1973). Cody and Mooney (1978) reviewed the information available at the time for the four zones excepting Australia and concluded that the arrays of strategy-types to be found among the different biotas were so similar that they could be explained only in terms of the convergence hypothesis; nevertheless, evident differences in community organization and dynamics, especially phenol ogy, required closer study of resource availability and resource-use patterns to better explain relations between form and function overall, and to assess the degree of convergence at higher levels of organization than the population.
