Book Synopsis Anopheline Species Complexes in South and South-East Asia by :
Download or read book Anopheline Species Complexes in South and South-East Asia written by and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2007 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vector-borne diseases are a major health problem in South-East Asia and in other parts of the world. There are about 4,500 mosquito species in existence; species belonging to the Anopheles genus transmit malaria. Combating malaria is part of the Millennium Development Goals, and vector control is a key strategy both regionally and globally. Therefore, the review and dissemination of information on vector species is critically important. Most of the anophelines that are involved in the transmission of malaria in South and South-East Asia have been identified as species complexes. Members of a species complex are reproductively isolated evolutionary units with distinct gene pools and hence they differ in their biological characteristics. In 1998 WHO published Anopheline Species Complexes in South-East Asia. New identification tools have been developed since then, and therefore this updated edition was needed. It summarizes work that has been done on anopheline cryptic species and will be highly valuable to researchers, field entomologists and malaria-control program managers.
Book Synopsis Innovations in the Entomological Surveillance of Vector-borne Diseases by : Ronald Markwardt
Download or read book Innovations in the Entomological Surveillance of Vector-borne Diseases written by Ronald Markwardt and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2021-07-09 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Information on, and investigation of, the epidemiology and methods of vector-borne diseases is usually incorporated only sparsely into books about the epidemiology of infectious diseases. The most generally accessible sources are the WHO’s annual malaria guidelines and annual World Malaria Reports. In contrast, the details and findings of research are found in specialist journals, and explain the minute details of a particular situation. This book is designed for people who need to investigate the sources of disease, and report their findings. Although it references hundreds of peer-reviewed studies, it presents the procedures that can be used by vector control and epidemiologists in straightforward language. It also makes mention of, and references, new and novel techniques that are currently being developed for investigations. The book begins with an explanation of what is required to conduct vector-borne disease epidemiology, and why the focus of prevention is the biting insects and arthropods. It also shows how the environment is the main unit of investigation in this regard, and explains techniques for developing a comprehensive and linked surveillance system and for detecting a disease prior to the infection of a human index case.

Book Synopsis Historical Dictionary of the World Health Organization by : Kelley Lee
Download or read book Historical Dictionary of the World Health Organization written by Kelley Lee and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2013 with total page 547 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The World Health Organization's history spans more than six decades. The past twenty years has been a particularly busy period in the organization's development, given the transition from international to global health cooperation and thus the need to adapt to major changes in its operating environment. Consequently, the WHO has been a direct part of new institutional arrangements and has shared in increased funding to provide for global health. It has also had to adapt its activities and programs in response to rival initiatives, leading to many changes--not only to the names of specific parts of the WHO but also to the nature of their activities. This second edition explores the organization's institutional complexity."--Back cover.
Book Synopsis Evaluating Health Projects by : Susan Stout
Download or read book Evaluating Health Projects written by Susan Stout and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the wave of decentralization that has swept through Latin America and the projected institutional changes within the governments in the region. Although it notes the ways in which decentralization implies a critique of past governing patterns, the emphasis is on such potential consequences of governmental change as the strengthening of democratic participation in government and the improvement of local public service. The book draws upon institutional experiments carried out at the state level to examine which decentralization strategies work best in Latin America. It is organized around three major requirements for the success of decentralization: * Establishing the national fiscal framework * Moving government closer to the people * Improving municipal service delivery. Tables illustrate the shift of revenues and expenditures from central authorities to intermediate levels of government.
