Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Searching for the Jaguar. This romantic thriller is set against the background of the lush Amazonian jungle and the violent streets of a North American city. A young American couple seek adventure and fulfillment in Brazils exotic mixture of peoples and religions. The characters are protagonists in a mural of interrelated events that cross social, economic, and national boundaries. The reality within which the events occur overwhelms the individual characters and takes away their ability to comprehend their destinies. Five lives intertwine in a game of life and death: Hank, the idealist caught in a web of intrigue, power and cocaine trafficking; Deb, the dedicated nurse who discovers real love in a foreboding setting; Steve, the serious lawyer struggling with his emotional conflict between duty and passion; Darryl, the ex-con misfit prone to explode in a blasphemous rage of jealousy and resentment; Scott, the young invalid who suddenly comes of age when murder and violence shatters the security of his life. Each one of them, driven by inner passions, brings mystery and depth to a story that connects the reader to a world of rich lyrical and philosophical implications. The story-related by Scott-sets out to reconstruct the lives of the protagonists with whatever information he can collect from diaries, letters, interviews, personal observation, and even his own imagination. He senses only dimly the multiple forces at play which are presented with an underlying surrealistic humor that gives the narrative shape and depth. He fits together the many puzzling pieces-which he can neither explain nor justify-and in the process begins to set his own life in order. Like the phoenix that rises from its ashes, Scott transcends his suffering and creates a new dimension of living as he recreates the old. A surreal humor underlies this compelling story about love, transformation, death, and survival. Superbly crafted, lyrically written. LETTER TO THE READER OF SEARCHING FOR THE JAGUAR BY CARLOTA LINDSAY You may have noticed that part of my dedication is addressed to you, the reader, and to your imagination and sense of humor. This is because a novel is fiction and becomes real only through the active participation of your creative self. It is in this way that you are as much the author of Searching for the Jaguar as I am. This is where a novel differs from a movie. In the latter the viewer receives lots of information visually without much participatory effort. In the modern novel the reader has to reconstitute the whole from information about its parts. This activity is closer to the one we perform in real life in order to understand ourselves and what our true role is. I want to mention also that a novel takes place in a time and space that for a few hours becomes your own and where the characters reveal themselves and unveil their unique function in the dimension of the novel that you help create. How much you learn about them or understand them is up to you. What about the characters? They are not presented but rather present themselves by what they say, what they do, and how they regard, and are regarded by, each other; that is, they are discovered existentially. The reader learns about them gradually: much as it is in real life the original perception is constantly evolving. By observing the characters actions and hearing their words, the reader ends up with more insight into their situation than the characters themselves do. The characters are searching not only within the dimension of the novel but beyond it in the imagination of the reader. In a sense, they escape the novel and walk into the readers consciousness, where they help him probe his own self. They have already escaped into mine, where they are searching for a continuity I did not know was there. In that sense they are searching, like Pirandellos characters, for an author. From the beginning the

Added to the endangered species list in 1997, the jaguar has declined in population mainly due to habitat fragmentation created by roads, farms, mines, and most controversially, the border wall. Such human-made barriers prevent free movement of many wild animals for predation and mating, thereby threatening their reproduction, DNA transfer, and overall survival. Author and wildlife biologist Elizabeth Webb examines the jaguar's predicament and highlights the work of field scientists who are searching for solutions. "Conservation Connection" features throughout the book underscore the importance of protecting this keystone species of the Americas.

Book excerpt: When the nature writer Richard Mahler discovers that wild jaguars are prowling a remote corner of his home state of New Mexico, he embarks on a determined quest to see in the flesh a big, beautiful cat that is the stuff of legend--yet verifiably real. Mahler's passion sets in motion a years-long adventure through trackless deserts, steamy jungles, and malarial swamps, as well as a confounding immersion in centuries-old debates over how we should properly regard these powerful predators: as varmints or as icons, trophies or gods? He is drawn from border badlands south to Panama's rain forest along a route where the fate of nearly all wildlife now rests in human hands. Mahler's odyssey introduces him to unrepentant poachers, pragmatic ranchers, midnight drug-runners, ardent conservationists, trance-induced shamans, hopeful biologists, stodgy bureaucrats, academic philosophers, macho hunters, and gentle Maya Indians. Along the way, he is forced to reconsider the true meaning of his search--and the enduring symbolism of the jaguar.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1935, when a small company in Coventry, England, launched a sporting saloon (i.e., sedan) called the Jaguar SS, it set in motion an inexorable process that would lead to Britain’s most beloved line of high-performance automobiles. The Complete Book of Jaguar covers the SS and all of the Jaguar's subsequent production models, from the original SS Jaguar to today’s F-Type sports cars, F-Pace SUV, X-Type sedans, as well as concept cars. As with other books in the Complete Book Series, author Nigel Thorley organizes the content chronologically with entries for each year. Narratives for each discuss the cars and technology, while spec tables highlight key technical and performance specifications. Originally begun by a couple of motorcycle enthusiasts—William Lyons and William Walmsley—as a firm called the Swallow Sidecar Company, Jaguar would become one of the world's most celebrated automakers. In England’s bleak postwar years, Jaguar became a shining star—first with its XK120, followed by the XK140 and XK150. Sporting sedans like the Mark 2 and Mark X set the bar for luxury four-door transport in the '50s and '60s. Then Jaguar stunned the world with the achingly beautiful E-Type in 1961, a genuine 150 mph super sports car. Along the way, the company competed on road courses around the world, going head to head with greats like Ferrari and Aston Martin. Though Jaguar lost its way periodically in the modern era, it has bounded back stronger than ever in the twenty-first century with a strong lineup, including the new F-Type sports car and F-Pace SUV. The Complete Book of Jaguar is the essential guide to this important chapter in the history of sports and luxury automobiles.

It tells the story of Gonzalo Guerrero, a Spanish sailor shipwrecked on the coast of Yucatan in 1511, between Columbus' discovery of the Americas and Cortez' conquest of Mexico. Maya lords enslave Guerrero and his fellow castaways, but he eventually gains his freedom. Encountering Ix Chan Can, the beautiful younger sister of the Maya lord Nachan Can, Guerrero chooses to remain among her people and win her love. Guerrero earns renown in a war against Nachan Can's enemies, and finally Ix Chan Can's hand. After they have two children, the only other still-living castaway, the clergyman Jeronimo de Aguilar, brings word of Cortez' landing. Guerrero refuses to rejoin his countrymen, cleaving to his family. But with Aguilar as interpreter, Cortez conquers the Aztecs, and the Spaniards inevitably return to impose their rule and religion on the Maya. Nachan Can now demands that Guerrero fight, and at last accepting that he must do so to protect his family, Guerrero tragically stakes his life for his adoptive people against ever-mounting odds. The Jaguar's Heart reveals the struggle of a man caught between cultures and conflicting loyalties at a pivotal moment in the history of the Americas. It is a book with the captivating setting of Gary Jennings' Aztec and its sequels, yet which reveals the humanity of both Spaniard and Indian, and with the compelling theme of W. Michael Gear and Kathleen O'Neal Gear's Contact: The Battle for America series.

Book excerpt: Search computing, which has evolved from service computing, focuses on building the answers to complex search queries by interacting with a constellation of cooperating search services, using ranking and joining of results as the dominant factors for service composition. The field is multi-disciplinary in nature, and takes advantage of contributions from other research areas such as knowledge representation, human-computer interfaces, psychology, sociology, economics and legal sciences. The book is divided into three parts. The first part includes some visionary contributions on the latest trends in search, which is becoming increasingly task-oriented and is starting to use ontological knowledge in order to manage complex queries. The second part explores background and related technologies, which can be considered as parallel fields of research, useful both for setting the theoretical premises for search computing and for providing a technological framework for building search computing systems and applications. The third part delves into the conceptual and technological problems and issues arising when dealing with search computing as a new search paradigm. It provides a unified view of the results of the Search Computing project as achieved exactly one year after its starting date.

Book excerpt: This “extraordinary” novel of one man’s border crossing reveals “a human history of sorrow and suffering, all of it beginning with the thirst to be free” (NPR). Héctor is trapped. The water truck, sealed to hide its human cargo, has broken down. The coyotes have taken all the passengers’ money for a mechanic and have not returned. Héctor finds a name in his friend César’s phone: AnniMac. A name with an American number. He must reach her, both for rescue and to pass along the message César has come so far to deliver. But are his messages going through? Over four days, as water and food run low, Héctor tells how he came to this desperate place. His story takes us from Oaxaca—its rich culture, its rapid change—to the dangers of the border, exposing the tangled ties between Mexico and El Norte. And it reminds us of the power of storytelling and the power of hope, as Héctor fights to ensure his message makes it out of the truck and into the world. Both an outstanding suspense novel and an arresting window into the relationship between two great cultures, The Jaguar’s Children shows how deeply interconnected all of us are. “This is what novels can do—illuminate shadowed lives, enable us to contemplate our own depths of kindness, challenge our beliefs about fate. Vaillant’s use of fact to inspire fiction brings to mind a long list of powerful novels from the past decade or so: What is the What by Dave Eggers; The Map of Love by Ahdaf Soueif; The Storyteller by Jodi Picoult.” —Amanda Eyre Ward, The New York Times Book Review “[A] heartbreaker . . . Wrenching . . . with a voice fresh and plangent enough to disarm resistance.” —The Boston Globe “Fearless.” —The Globe and Mail
