Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Terrorists kidnap Mirembe Kenyagi, a Kenyan banker, and her sister Susan. Mirembe miraculously escapes, but Susan is sold into sex slavery in terrorist plagued Iraq. While working at the bank, Mirembe met Raul Martinez, a Miami lawyer who assists clients—both good guys and bad guys—by setting up “foundations” to hide money from creditors and cops. Mirembe contacts Raul seeking assistance as she prepares to traverse the dangerous Middle East refugee camps in search of Susan. Raul is married to Haifa, an international model in Jordan. Raul asks Haifa to enlist her rich and famous friends to aid the enslaved female refugees, but Haifa is an addict and captive of social media where she gathers followers and boyfriends. At great peril to himself, Raul diverts money from the international money-laundering underworld to fund rescue operations for sex slaves, coincidentally preventing his wife from latching on to his fortune. Searching for Sister explores people who waste their lives staring cross-eyed at screens but also the people who find the courage to act to rescue women in distress. Every month hundreds of women are kidnapped, raped, and forced into sex-slavery and marriage. Author Paul Platte reports the untold, true events of those women’s war for survival.

Book excerpt: An NPR Best Book of the Year A Vanity Fair Best Summer Read "A haunting, mind-bending memoir. . . . riveting." —New York Times "A mixture of biography and true crime, this narrative . . . offers more plot twists, shocking revelations and shady characters than most contemporary thrillers." —NPR The Book of Atlantis Black will have you questioning facts, rooting for secrets, and asking what it means to know the truth. A young woman is found dead on the floor of a Tijuana hotel room. An ID in a nearby purse reads “Atlantis Black.” The police report states that the body does not seem to match the identification, yet the body is quickly cremated and the case is considered closed. So begins Betsy Bonner’s search for her sister, Atlantis, and the unraveling of the mysterious final months before Atlantis’s disappearance, alleged overdose, and death. With access to her sister’s email and social media accounts, Bonner attempts to decipher and construct a narrative: frantic and unintelligible Facebook posts, alarming images of a woman with a handgun, Craigslist companionship ads, DEA agent testimony, video surveillance, police reports, and various phone calls and moments in the flesh conjured from memory. Through a history only she and Atlantis shared—a childhood fraught with abuse and mental illness, Atlantis’s precocious yet short rise in the music world, and through it all an unshakable bond of sisterhood—Bonner finds questions that lead only to more questions and possible clues that seem to point in no particular direction. In this haunting memoir and piercing true crime account, Bonner must decide how far she will go to understand a sister who, like the mythical island she renamed herself for, might prove impossible to find.

A baby sister is joining the family! That’s great news, but older siblings may be a bit uncertain. Fortunately for them, this rhyming board book addresses what to expect: “Your sister will drool. She will smell. She will scream. She just might pull your hair. She’ll do things that seem mean.” The text, accompanied by irresistible art from renowned illustrator Sam Williams, also explains how older kids can be role models to their new little sister: “You can be her first teacher. Show her things that you know. Give her patience and love, she’s just starting to grow.” At the back of the book, there’s even designated space for older siblings to write about their new baby sister. This book is a great gift for the new big brother or big sister to be! And a great gift for parents, too! Sam Williams’s Baby Cakes has sold more than 65,000 copies!

In 1897, she is offered a life-changing opportunity: she will travel to Canada's northwest frontier to search for young Billie Thomm. Surviving in the gutters of London, England, Billie had acquired the cunning of someone twice his 15 years, but a moment of desperation and his connection to a messy death brought him to the Eastwood Mission Society. Before the law could catch up with him, he became a home child, one of thousands of orphans and beggars shipped to Canada to find better lives. Now he is on the run again-and on his own, just the way he likes it. As clues to his whereabouts lead Jane north of Fort Edmonton, she encounters a cast of rough-hewn characters, the likes of which she has never known. Some repel, others surprise, and one she is strangely attracted to. Trapped in a wilderness of adventure and horror, brilliant aurora borealis and bitter cold, Jane stumbles into a life bigger than anything she could have imagined.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using the slave narratives of Henry Bibb and Frederick Douglass, as well as the work of W. E. B. Du Bois, James Baldwin, Walter Mosley, and Barack Obama, Ronda C. Henry Anthony examines how women's bodies are used in African American literature to fund the production of black masculine ideality and power. In tracing representations of ideal black masculinities and femininities, the author shows how black men's struggles for gendered agency are inextricably entwined with their complicated relation to white men and normative masculinity. The historical context in which this study couches these struggles highlights the extent to which shifting socioeconomic circumstances dictate the ideological, cultural, and emotional terms upon which black men conceptualize identity. Yet, Anthony quickly moves to texts that challenge traditional constructions of black masculinity. In these texts she traces how the emergence of collaboratively gendered discourses, or a blending of black female/male feminist consciousnesses, are reshaping black masculinities, femininities, and intraracial relations for a new century.
