Book excerpt: The authors summarize the results of two recent searches for flavor-changing neutral current, lepton-flavor violating, and lepton-number violating decays of D[sup+], D[sub s][sup+], and D[sup 0] mesons (and their antiparticles) into modes containing muons and electrons. using data from Fermilab charm hadroproduction experiment E791, they examined D[sup+] and D[sub s][sup+][pi][ell][ell] and[Kappa][ell][ell] decay modes and the D[sup 0] dilepton decay modes containing either[ell][sup+][ell][sup[minus]], a[rho][sup 0], [bar[Kappa]]*[sup 0], or[phi] vector meson, or a non-resonant[pi][pi], [Kappa][pi], or[Kappa][Kappa] pair of pseudoscalar mesons. No evidence for any of these decays was found. Therefore, the authors presented branching-fraction upper limits at 90% confidence level for the 51 decay modes examined. Twenty-six of these modes had no previously reported limits, and eighteen of the remainder were reported with significant improvements over previously published results.

We searched for flavour-changing weak neutral currents and for leptons family number violation in the D°-decay modes D° .-->. .mu.e, D° .-->. ee/sup /minus// and D° .-->. K° e+e/sup /minus//. No candidates were observed at a sensitivity to the branching ratios at the 10/sup /minus//4// level. Since couplings of many new intermediate particles in models beyond the Standard Model are expected to be flavour-dependent, these searches in the charmed sector are complementary to the ones performed with leptons and with K- or B-mesons. 9 refs., 3 figs.

Book excerpt: We present searches for rare or forbidden charm decays of the form X{sub c} 2!h{sup ±}l{sup {-+}}l{sup ({prime})+}, where X{sub c} is a charm hardron (D+, D{sub s}+, or [Lambda]{sub c}+), h{sup {+-}} is a pion, kaon, or proton, and l{sup ({prime}){+-}} is an electron or muon. The analysis is based on 384 fb−1 of e+e− annihilation data collected at or close to the [Upsilon](4S) resonance with the BABAR detector at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. No significant signal is observed for any of the 35 decay modes that are investigated. We establish 90% confidence-level upper limits on the branching fractions between 1 x 10−6 and 44 x 10−6 depending on the channel. In most cases, these results represent either the first limits or significant improvements on existing limits for the decay modes studied.
