The putative Higgs boson is the most plausible solution for the mystery of mass in the Standard Model of elementary particles and its discovery is one of the prime goals for the LHC. Higgs boson search. Our research presents an optimized strategy for a Higgs boson search in its four-muon decay channel, H--> ZZ[superscript*]--> 4[mu], also known as a golden decay channel. The method automatically ensures an optimal signal-to-background ratio for any mass, at which the Higgs boson might appear. The most important theoretical and instrumental systematic errors are taken into account and our search was conducted in a broad range of possible Higgs boson masses. Muon reconstruction. We developed an algorithm for a fast and efficient muon track segment reconstruction in Cathode Strip Chambers. Designed to be CPU-efficient, the algorithm is specifically targeted for High Level Trigger purposes. The segment-finding efficiency and the spatial resolution attainable with the proposed algorithm and the required CPU time were validated using the cosmic ray data taken by the CMS in 2006. The results of validation showed the efficiency and spatial resolution attainable with the algorithm are well within the High Level Trigger requirements and the algorithm's timing performance is by far superior to all algorithms previously used in CMS.

As the Higgs boson is an unstable particle, its search strategies were based on its decay products. In this thesis, Francesco Pandolfi conducted a search for the Higgs boson in the H → ZZ → l + l - qq Decay Channel with 4.6 fb -1 of 7 TeV proton-proton collision data collected by the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment. The presence of jets in the final state poses a series of challenges to the experimenter: both from a technical point of view, as jets are complex objects and necessitate of ad-hoc reconstruction techniques, and from an analytical one, as backgrounds with jets are copious at hadron colliders, therefore analyses must obtain high degrees of background rejection in order to achieve competitive sensitivity. This is accomplished by following two directives: the use of an angular likelihood discriminant, capable of discriminating events likely to originate from the decay of a scalar boson from non-resonant backgrounds, and by using jet parton flavor tagging, selecting jets compatible with quark hadronization and discarding jets more likely to be initiated by gluons. The events passing the selection requirements in 4.6 fb -1 of data collected by the CMS detector are examined, in the search of a possible signal compatible with the decay of a heavy Higgs boson. The thesis describes the statistical tools and the results of this analysis. This work is a paradigm for studies of the Higgs boson with final states with jets. The non-expert physicists will enjoy a complete and eminently readable description of a proton-proton collider analysis. At the same time, the expert reader will learn the details of the searches done with jets at CMS.

The search was performed using the data collected by the CMS experiment at CERN during Run 2 of the LHC accelerator. The data comes from p-p collisions at (sqrt) s = 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb^-1 . In the Standard Model of Particles and Fields (SM) once the mass of the Higgs boson is known, all its couplings get fixed, including the coupling to muons. Any significant deviations in the experimental results from the values expected from the SM predictions could indicate the onset of new physics. Therefore, it is very important to measure all possible decay channel parameters. The H to (mu) ^+ (mu)^- is the only channel where the Higgs boson couples to the second generation of fermions that could be measured during Run 2 of the LHC. The Higgs coupling to fermions is proportional to the mass of the particles, and since the muons are very light, any measurement in this channel provides valuable information about the Higgs Yukawa coupling to fermions. The small branching ratio of the H to (mu) ^+ (mu)^- decay (2.4 * 10^-4 ) indicates that with the statistics collected by CMS during the Run 2 of the LHC, the expected number of events is also small. Therefore, any improvement in the event selection should be included in the analysis. In this thesis I have focused in recovering events in which the final-state muons might have radiated photons (final-state radiation, FSR) and in correcting the resulting invariant mass distribution. Two techniques were implemented: a cut-based analysis and a multivariate analysis. A study of the impact of the FSR photon recovery in the Higgs mass reconstruction is presented. Book excerpt: The standard model of particle physics provides a detailed description of a universe in which all matter is composed of a small number of fundamental particles, which interact through the exchange of force - carrying gauge bosons (the photon, W{sup ±}, Z and gluons). The organization of the matter and energy in this universe is determined by the effects of three forces; the strong, weak, and electromagnetic. The weak and electromagnetic forces are the low energy manifestations of a single electro-weak force, while the strong force binds quarks into protons and neutrons. The standard model does not include gravity, as the effect of this force on fundamental particles is negligible. Four decades of experimental tests, spanning energies from a few electron-volts (eV) up to nearly two TeV, confirm that the universe described by the standard model is a reasonable approximation of our world. For example, experiments have confirmed the existence of the top quark, the W{sup ±} and the Z bosons, as predicted by the standard model. The latest experimental averages for the masses of the top quark, W{sup ±} and Z are respectively 173.1 ± 0.6(stat.) {+-} 1.1(syst.), 80.399 {+-} 0.023 and 91.1876 {+-} 0.0021 GeV/c2. The SM is a gauge field theory of zero mass particles. However, the SM is able to accommodate particles with non-zero mass through the introduction of a theoretical Higgs field which permeates all of space. Fermions gain mass through interactions with this field, while the longitudinal components of the massive W{sup {+-}} and Z are the physical manifestations of the field itself. Introduction of the Higgs field, directly leads to the predicted existence of an additional particle, the Higgs boson. The Higgs boson is the only particle of the standard model that has not been observed, and is the only unconfirmed prediction of the theory. The standard model describes the properties of the Higgs boson in terms of its mass, which is a free parameter in the theory. Experimental evidence suggests that the Higgs mass has a value between 114.4 and 186 GeV/c2. Particles with a mass in this range can be produced in collisions of less massive particles accelerated to near the speed of light. Currently, one of only a few machines capable of achieving collision energies large enough to potentially produce a standard model Higgs boson is the Tevatron proton-antiproton collider located at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, Illinois. This dissertation describes the effort to observe the standard model Higgs in Tevatron collisions recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) II experiment in the ZH --> ll−b{bar b} production and decay channel. In this process, the Higgs is produced along with a Z boson which decays to a pair of electrons or muons (Z --> ll−), while the Higgs decays to a bottom anti-bottom quark pair (H --> b{bar b}). A brief overview of the standard model and Higgs theory is presented in Chapter 2. Chapter 3 explores previous searches for the standard model Higgs at the Tevatron and elsewhere. The search presented in this dissertation expands upon the techniques and methods developed in previous searches. The fourth chapter contains a description of the Tevatron collider and the CDF II detector. The scope of the discussion in Chapter 4 is limited to the experimental components relevant to the current ZH --> l+l−b{bar b} search. Chapter 5 presents the details of object reconstruction; the methods used to convert detector signals into potential electrons, muons or quarks. Chapter six describes the data sample studied for the presence of a ZH --> l+l−b{bar b} signal and details the techniques used to model the data. The model accounts for both signal and non-signal processes (backgrounds) which are expected to contribute to the observed event sample. Chapters 7 and 8 summarize the event selection applied to isolate ZH --> l+l−b{bar b} candidate events from the data sample, and the advanced techniques employed to maximize the separation of the signal from background processes. Chapters 9 and 10 present the systematic uncertainties affecting our modeling of the data sample and the results of the search. Chapter 11 presents a discussion of ZH --> l+l−b{bar b} in the context of the overall Tevatron efforts to observe a standard model Higgs signal.

A model-independent upper limit of 0.86±0.06 fb on the product of the cross section times branching fraction times acceptance is obtained. Finally, the results, which are applicable to a broad spectrum of new physics scenarios, are compared with the predictions of two benchmark models as functions of a Higgs boson mass larger than 86 GeV/c2 and of a new light boson mass within the range 0.25-3.55 GeV/c2.

Data is taken from pp collisions with center of mass energy sqrt(s) = 7 TeV at the LHC using the CMS detector over the course of 2011. The sum of the data collected amounts to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 fb−. Identification of WW− candidates is performed by searching for leptonic decays of both W bosons. The resulting signature is two oppositely charged leptons, electrons or muons, plus significant missing transverse energy in the final state. The other Standard Model processes which only serve as background to the Higgs boson search are removed via a series of selections aimed to reduce the backgrounds while keeping the highest possible signal-to-background ratio. The Higgs boson signal is identified over the non-resonant W+W− production by exploiting the spin correlation of the H [right arrow] WW decays. Details concerning the analysis selection criteria, the data-driven estimates of the major background processes and the systematic uncertainties of the analysis are all presented in detail. As no significant excess of events are observed above the Standard Model background estimates, upper limits are set on the Higgs boson production with respect to the Standard Model prediction. Exclusion of the Higgs boson is extended with respect to previous measurements to a range of 132-238 GeV with a 95% confidence level.

Book excerpt: In this thesis, I describe the search for a Higgs boson through its decay to a pair of tan leptons with the tau-pair subsequently decaying to ail electron, a muon, and neutrinos. The search is performed using data collected from proton-proton collisions by the Compact Muon Solenoid experiment at the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to 5.0 fb-1 of integrated luminosity recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV and 19.7 fb-1 at 8 TeV. The expected significance for a Standard Model Higgs boson signal with a mass of 125 GeV is at the level of 1.2 standard deviations for the electron muon tau-pair decay mode. A mild excess of events is seen above the SM background expectation in this decay mode, consistent with a SM Higgs boson of mass 125 GeV. In combination with results using other tau-pair decay modes, an excess of events above the background expectation is seen at the level of 3.4 standard deviations. This constitutes the first evidence for a Higgs boson to decay to leptons. This thesis also describes an analysis of the data in the context of physics beyond the Standard Model, particularly in the framework of its Minimal Supersymnnetric extension.
