Book excerpt: An experimental search for the lepton-family number nonconserving decay, .mu. .-->. e.gamma gamma., has been conducted at the Clinton P. Anderson Meson Physics Facility (LAMPF) using the Crystal Box detector. The detector consists of a modular NaI(Tl) calorimeter, scintillator hodoscope, and a high-resolution, cylindrical drift chamber. It provides a large solid-angle for detecting three-body decays and has good resolutions in the time, position, and energy measurements to eliminate unwanted backgrounds. No evidence for .mu.+ .-->. e+.gamma gamma. is found, giving an upper limit for the branching ratio of GAMMA(.mu. .-->. e.gamma gamma.)/GAMMA(.mu. .-->. e nu anti nu) less than or equal to 7.2 x 10−11 (90% C.L.). This result is an improvement of more than two orders of magnitude in the existing limit. 109 refs., 39 figs.

Book excerpt: A search has been performed for the decays .mu. .-->. eee, .mu. .-->. e.gamma., and .mu. .-->. e.gamma gamma. with a sensitivity in the branching ratios at the level of 10−1°. The experiment used a separated, 26 MeV/c .mu./sup +/ beam with an average intensity of 300kHz. A total of 2.2 x 1011 muon decays were examined for the present result. The detector for the experiment is the Crystal Box, which consists of a cylindrical drift chamber surrounded by 396 NaI(T1) crystals. A layer of scintillation counters in front of the crystals provided timing for electrons and veto for photons. The energy resolution for electrons and photons is approx. 6% (FWHM). The position resolution of the drift chamber is 350 .mu.m leading to a vertex cut with a rejection of 103 for .mu. .-->. eee. The timing resolution is approx. 300 ps the scintillators and approx. 1 ns from the crystals. No candidate for .mu. .-->. eee has been found, yielding an upper limit for the branching ratio of B/sub .mu. 3e/

Therefore an observation of a significant signal above the Standard Model prediction could be a sign of new physics.

The number of stopped pions, 7.39X10 to the ninth power and the detection efficiency of the apparatus for muon to electron + gamma events, 3.9%, would predict the detection of 3 events for a branching ratio of 10 to the minus eighth power. No evidence for the existence of this decay was found. The distribution in range of the e(+) in graphite, and of the (e, to the minus eighth power) angle for the events found near 180 deg was consistent with that expected from muon(+) to position +neutrinotantineotrino+gamma. The probability of finding the observed distribution was calculated to be greatest for an assumed muon to electron+gamma branching ratio of zero. This probability drops below 50% of this value if the branching ratio is 0.6X10 to the minus eighth power, and below 10% for 2.2X10 to the minus eighth power. (Author).

Book excerpt: Searching for decays that change total lepton family number is an excellent method to explore potential physics beyond the Standard Model because those processes are predicted to be zero except when new physics is present. Essentially all extensions of the Standard Model that introduce new, heavy particles predict the existence of these rare decays, though the most probable channel is highly model dependent. Recently, the prejudice has grown within the physics community that supersymmetry is an extension that is likely to be related to nature. Barbieri, Hall, and Strumia show that rare decays are signatures for grand unified supersymmetry and calculate the rates for [mu][sup +] [r-arrow] e[sup +][gamma] and related processes for a wide range of parameters of these models. They conclude that [mu][sup +] [r-arrow] e[sup +][gamma] has the largest rate by more than two orders of magnitude, and it ranges between the current experimental limit and 10[sup [minus]14]. Hence, there is continuing interest in the community for an experiment that could have a sensitivity near 10[sup [minus]14]. Lessons are drawn from the experience of the MEGA experiment in searching for [mu][sup +] to e[sup +][gamma]. In light of that experience, some ideas are evaluated regarding new searches that might take place in the ERA of a source of low-energy muons associated with a muon collider.
