Book excerpt: Abstract: The Standard Model is the best current description of fundamental interactions and particles; however, the Standard Model has certain shortcomings which have driven particle physicists for the last 30 years to search for phenomena which provide evidence for the next theory beyond the Standard Model. To this end, using the BaBar detector, we search for evidence of the rare decay D* -> D0[pi];D0->[gamma][gamma]. The branching fraction of this decay is enhanced up to 200 times the standard model prediction in certain beyond-the-Standard-Model theories. A measurement of a significant branching fraction would provide evidence for a new theory of particle physics. We describe our search for this rare decay and an improved measurement of the associated decay, B(D0-> [pi]0 [pi]0) using an integrated luminosity corresponding to 470.5 fb−1 of e e− data collected by the BaBar detector at the PEP-II asymmetric ee− collider at SLAC from 1999-2007. We place an upper limit of B(D0->[gamma][gamma]) 2.51 X 10−6 at 90% confidence level and find B(D0-[pi]0[pi]0) = (8.4 " 0.1 " 0.4 " 0.3) X 10−4.

When setting limits on the branching ratio, selected events are normalized to reconstructed B{sup {+-}} → J/?K{sup {+-}} events in order to decrease the systematic uncertainty. The resulting expected upper limit is?(B{sub s} →?+?−) = 4.3(5.3) x 10−8 at the 90% (95%) C.L.

The upper limits on the branching fractions, at the 90% confidence level, are 1.2 x 10{sup -6} for D{sup 0} {yields} e{sup +}e{sup -}, 1.3 x 10{sup -6} for D{sup 0} {yields} {mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup -}, and 8.1 x 10{sup -7} for D{sup 0} {yields} e{sup {+-}}{mu}{sup {-+}}.

Book excerpt: I report the results of a search for flavor-changing neutral current, leptonflavor, and lepton-number violating decays of the 3 and 4-body decay modes of the D0 (and its antiparticle) containing muons and electrons. Using data from Fermilab charm hadroproduction experiment E791, I examine modes with two leptons and either a [rho]0, $\bar{K}$0, or [Phi] vector meson or a non-resonant [pi][pi], K[pi], or KK pair of pseudoscalar mesons. No evidence for any of these decays is found. Therefore, branching-fraction upper limits, typically at the 10-4 level, are presented at the 90% confidence level for the 27 decay modes examined. Of these searches, 18 are investigations of decays without previous published results; several others have significantly improved sensitivity over previous results.

These decays are highly GIM suppressed but may be enhanced in several extensions of the Standard Model. Our observed event yields are consistent with the expected backgrounds. An excess is seen in the D° →?+?− channel, although the observed yield is consistent with an upward background fluctuation at the 5% level. Using the Feldman-Cousins method, we set the following 90% confidence level intervals on the branching fractions:?(D° → e+e−)

Using B → J/?h (h - K+, K*(892)°,?) decays as normalization channels, they report branching fractions for the previously observed B+ and B° decays as normalization channels, they report branching fractions for the previously observed B+ and B° decays,?(B+ →?+?−K+) = (0.59 ± 0.15 ± 0.04) x 10−6, and?(B° →?+?−K*(892)°) = (0.81 ± 0.30 ± 0.10) x 10−6, where the first uncertainty is statistical, and the second is systematic. These measurements are consistent with the world average results, and are competitive with the best available measurements. They set an upper limit on the relative branching fraction?(B{sub s}°→?+?−?)/?(B{sub s}°→J/??)
