The domain in the [M({bar t}1), M({bar {nu}})] plane excluded at the 95% C.L. is substantially extended by this search.

Book excerpt: The ATLAS Experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider is a particle physics experiment to study fundamental particles and their interactions at very high energies. Supersymmetry is a theory of new physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. A search for directly produced pairs of the supersymmetric partner of the top quark was performed using 20 fb^-1 of proton--proton collision data at a centre of mass energy of 8 TeV taken in 2012. The search targeted a model where the supersymmetric partner of the top quark (``scalar top'') decays via the supersymmetric partner of the tau lepton (``scalar tau'') into the supersymmetric partner of the graviton (``gravitino''). Scalar top candidates were searched for in pp collision events with either two hadronically decaying taus, two light leptons (electrons or muons), or one hadronically decaying tau and one light lepton. The numbers of events passing the analysis selection criteria agree with the Standard Model expectations. Exclusion limits at the 95% confidence level were set as a function of the scalar top and scalar tau masses. Depending on the scalar tau mass, ranging from the 87 GeV limit set by the LEP experiments to a few GeV below the scalar top mass, lower limits between 490 GeV and 640 GeV were placed on the scalar top mass within the model considered.

Book excerpt: "This thesis presents a search for Supersymmetry carried out in a particular scenario arising from the Gauge Mediated Supersymmetry breaking mechanism that assumes a massless gravitino as lightest supersymmetric particle, a scalar tau lepton as next-to-lightest supersymmetric particle and the top squark as the lightest among the quark superpartners. The analysis is performed using the data collected by ATLAS at a centre-of-mass energy √s = 8 TeV during 2012 data taking, for a total of 20.3 fb−1 of integrated luminosity of proton-proton collisions. Scalar top quark candidates are searched for in events with either two light leptons, one hadronically decaying tau and one light lepton or two hadronically decaying taus in the final state. No significant excess over the Standard Model expectation is found and the results are interpreted as 95% confidence lower limits not top squark and scalar tau masses. Depending on the scalar tau mass, lower limits between 490 and 650 GeV are placed on the top squark mass within the model considered. Book excerpt: We report on a search for the supersymmetric partner of the top quark (scalar top) decaying into a charm quark and a neutralino in p{bar p} collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV. The data sample, collected by the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron, corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.6 fb−1. Candidate events are selected by requiring two or more jets and a large imbalance in the transverse momentum. To enhance the analysis sensitivity, at least one of the jets is required to be identified as originating from a charm quark using an algorithm specifically designed for this analysis. The selected events are in good agreement with standard model predictions. In the case of large mass splitting between the scalar top quark and the neutralino we exclude a scalar top quark mass below 180 GeV/c2 at 95% confidence level.

The search uses events from a data sample of proton-proton collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb-1, collected with the CMS detector at the LHC with [arrow]" = 8 TeV. The number of observed events is found to be in agreement with the expected standard model background. Third-generation scalar leptoquarks with masses below 740 GeV are excluded at 95% confidence level, assuming a 100% branching fraction for the leptoquark decay to a tau lepton and a bottom quark. In addition, this mass limit applies directly to top squarks decaying via an R-parity violating coupling [lambda]'333. The search also considers a similar signature from top squarks undergoing a chargino-mediated decay involving the R-parity violating coupling [lambda]'3jk. Each top squark decays to a tau lepton, a bottom quark, and two light quarks. Top squarks in this model with masses below 580 GeV are excluded at 95% confidence level. The constraint on the leptoquark mass is the most stringent to date, and this is the first search for top squarks decaying via [lambda]'3jk.

Book excerpt: We present a search for anomalous production of the signature lepton + photon + b-quark + missing transverse energy (`[gamma]6ETb) produced in $p\bar{p}$ collisions at √ s = 1.96 TeV using 6.0 fb-1 of data taken with the CDF detector in Run II at the Tevatron. In addition to this signature-based search, we present a closely-related search for top pair production with an additional radiated photon, t$\bar{t}$[gamma]. We find 85 `[gamma]6ETb events versus an expectation of 99.1±9.3 events. High-statistics control samples are used to evaluate a low-energy photon [chi] 2 cut. Additionally requiring the events to contain at least three jets, have a total transverse energy of 200 GeV, and that the photon candidate passes the [chi] 2 cut, we observe 30 t$\bar{t}$[gamma] candidate events versus an expectation from non-top Standard Model (SM) sources of 13.0 ± 2.1 Assuming the difference between the observed number and the predicted non-top SM total is due to top production, we measure the tt$\bar{[gamma]}$ cross section to be 0.18 ± 0.08 pb. We also measure the ratio of the t$\bar{t}$[gamma] cross section to the t$\bar{t}$cross section to be 0.024 ± 0.009, which compares well with a SM prediction of 0.024 ± 0.013.

Book excerpt: The authors report a search for the anomalous production of events with multiple charged leptons in p{bar p} collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 346 pb−1 collected by the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. The search is divided into three-lepton and four-or-more-lepton data samples. They observe six events in the three-lepton sample and zero events in the ≥4-lepton sample. Both numbers of events are consistent with standard model background expectations. Within the framework of an R-parity violating supergravity model, the results are interpreted as mass limits on the lightest neutralino ({bar {chi}}1°) and chargino ({bar {chi}}1{sup {+-}}) particles. For one particular choice of model parameters, the limits are M({bar {chi}}1°) > 110 GeV/c2 and M({bar {chi}}1{sup {+-}}) > 203 GeV/c2 at 95% confidence level; the variation of these mass limits with model parameters is presented.

We perform parallel searches for t' → W b and t' → W q (where q is a generic down-type quark) in events containing a lepton and four or more jets. By performing a fit to the two-dimensional distribution of total transverse energy versus reconstructed t' quark mass, we set upper limits on the t'{anti t}' production cross section and exclude a standard model fourth-generation t' quark decaying to W b (W q) with mass below 358 (340) GeV/c2 at 95% CL.

Book excerpt: A search for the pair production of supersymmetric partner of the top quark in scenario with R-parity violation is presented. The quantum number called R-parity distinguishes particles in standard model from supersymmetric particles. A scalar top quark (stop) is assumed to decay only via R{sub p}-violating supersymmetric coupling into tau lepton and b-quark. To collect events with multiple taus, a new special tau trigger (the lepton plus track trigger) is installed in Run II experiment of the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). The goal of the lepton plus track trigger is to collect generic dilepton ({ell}{ell}, {ell}{tau}, {tau}{tau}) events with lower p{sub T} threshold (8 GeV/c) and without prescale even at high luminosity. The Z {yields} {tau}{tau} event, where one {tau}-lepton decays leptonically and the other hadronically, is a good benchmark to calibrate the lepton plus track trigger and {tau} identification. The data sample of 72 pb{sup -1}, collected using the electron plus track trigger, contains clear a {tau} signal from Z {yields} {tau}{tau} events. The data used in stop search correspond to 200 pb{sup -1}. The lower stop mass bound of 134 GeV/c{sup 2} at a 95% confidence level is obtained. This limit is also directly applicable to the case of the third generation scalar leptoquark (LQ{sub 3}) assuming a 100% branching for the LQ{sub 3} {yields} {tau}b decay mode.

The topology analyzed consists of two b jets and an imbalance in transverse momentum due to undetected neutralinos ({tilde {chi}}1°), with {tilde {chi}}1° assumed to be the lightest supersymmetric particle. They find the data consistent with standard model expectations, and set a 95% C.L. exclusion domain in the (m{sub {tilde b}}, m{sub {tilde {chi}}}) mass plane, improving significantly upon the results from Run I of the Tevatron.
