The decay channels B[sub c][sup+][r-arrow] J/[psi][pi][sup+], B[sub c][sup+][r-arrow] J/[psi]a[sub 1][sup+] and B[sub c][sup+][r-arrow] J/[psi][ell][sup+][nu] were investigated, where[ell] denotes an electron or a muon. Two candidates are observed in the mode B[sub c][sup+][r-arrow] J/[psi][pi][sup+], with an estimated background of (0.63[+-] 0.20) events. The weighted mean of the masses of the two candidates is (6.32[+-] 0.06) GeV/c[sup 2], which is consistent with the predicted mass of the B[sub c] meson. One candidate event is observed in the mode B[sub c][sup+][r-arrow] J/[psi][ell][sup+][nu], with an estimated background of (0.82[+-] 0.19) events. No candidate events are observed in the B[sub c][sup+][r-arrow] J/[psi]a[sub 1][sup+] decay mode, with an estimated background of (1.10[+-] 0.22) events. Upper bounds at the 90% confidence level are set on the production rates for these processes.

Book excerpt: "This thesis presents the searches for two rare B meson decays: the radiative leptonic decay B+ -> l+ nu gamma (l = e, mu) and the flavor-changing neutral current B -> K(*) nu nubar. These searches use the full dataset collected by the BaBar experiment, which corresponds to almost 500 million BB pairs. After fully reconstructing the hadronic decay of one of the B mesons in Upsilon(4S) -> BB decays, evidence of B+ -> l+ nu gamma or B -> K(*) nu nubar is looked for in the rest of the event. No significant evidence of either signal decay is observed. Model-independent branching-fraction upper limits are set at BR(B ->e nu gamma)17 x10 {-6}, BR(B -mu nu gamma)24 x10 {-6}, and BR(B -l nu gamma)15.6 x10 {-6}, all at the 90% confidence level. These are currently the most stringent published upper limits for B+ - l+ nu gamma. In addition, branching-fraction upper limits are set at BR(B -> K+ nu nubar)3.7 x10 {-5}, BR(B - K0 nu nubar)8.0 x10 {-5}, BR(B - K*+ nu nubar)11.5 x10 {-5}, and BR(B - K*0 nu nubar)9.2 x10 {-5}, all at the 90% confidence level. For additional sensitivity to New Physics contributions, partial B - K(*) nu nubar branching-fraction upper limits are also determined over the full kinematic range." --

The data were taken with the BABAR detector during its first run at the PEP-II asymmetric e[sup +]e[sup -] collider. Book excerpt: The doubly Cabibbo suppressed decayed D+ → K+[pi]-[pi]+, D+ → K+[pi]0and D+ → K*+[pi]0 are searched for in a 9.56 pb-1 data sample of e+e- annihilation events collected near the [psi](3770) resonance with the Mark 3 detector at the SPEAR storage ring, at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. These rare weak decays are naively expected at a rate of tan4[theta]c relative to corresponding Cabibbo allowed decays. In the context of presently accepted models of hadronic weak decays, however, they are anticipated to be enhanced, making their experimental detection feasible in the Mark 3 data set. The experimentally simplest decay channel D+ → K+[pi]-[pi]+ is searched for inclusively through conventional analysis techniques. A signal of approximately 2.5 [sigma] significance is obtained. An independent analysis is performed to establish examples of this decay of D+ → K+[pi]0 and K*+[pi]0 by full reconstruction of D+D-events. Exploiting the two body kinematics of [psi](3770) → D$\bar{D}$, this second approach obtains significantly smaller backgrounds than the inclusive study. Consistent with the inclusive results, three D+ → K+[pi]-[pi]+ candidate events are observed. No events are observed for either D+ → K+[pi]0 or K*+[pi]0. The branching fraction for D+ → K+[pi]-[pi]+ is measured, and limits are established on the branching fractions for D+ → K+[pi]0 and K*+[pi]0. These results are used to confront the theoretical predictions from models of the weak hadronic decays of charmed mesons.
