Book excerpt: This research project searches for new physics in the t sector that would resolve the tension between BABAR measurement for the pion-photon transition form factor F?0(Q2) and the standard model asymptotic prediction. This behaviour could be explained by a new light pseudo-scalar state that mixes with the ?0 and enhances its coupling to the c and b quarks or the t lepton, or by a new spin-0 particle with mass very close to the ?0. We examine one channel to test for existence of such objects: their creation in association with t pairs in e+e- collisions. The analysis uses a typical cut-based approach as the large predicted cross-sections and the kinematics of the final states allow for a direct selection of signal events and background suppression. Current simulation studies predict a 90% CL limit on the production cross-section on the order of 100 fb in case of no signal, while the theory predicts production cross-sections on the order of 1 pb to 100 pb depending on the model.

This book was released on 2005 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present the results of a search for new particles decaying to tau pairs using the data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 195 pb-1 collected from March 2002 to September 2003 with the CDF detector at the Tevatron. Hypothetical particles, such as Z' and MSSM Higgs bosons can potentially produce the tau pair final state. We discuss the method of tau identification, and show the signal acceptance versus new particle mass. The low-mass region, dominated by Z → ??, is used as a control region. In the high-mass region, we expect 2.8 ± 0.5 events from known background sources, and observe 4 events in the data sample. Thus no significant excess is observed, and we set upper limits on the cross section times branching ratio as a function of the masses of heavy scalar and vector particles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes a study of the tau-pair final state in proton collisions at a center of mass energy of 7 TeV using the CMS Experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. Tau leptons usually decay to hadrons and their efficient detection is very challenging in a hadronic environment. A novel tau reconstruction algorithm that maintains tau detection efficiency for low background rates was developed. Events were then selected from the CMS 2011 data sample in three T T final states depending on the tau decays: mu + T (h), e+ T (h), e+mu where T (h) denotes a hadronic tau decay. Those events were used to measure the Z-boson production cross section where Z yields T T . A search for the Standard Model and Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) Higgs bosons was also performed. No signal was observed in the Higgs search and stringent new bounds were set for the SM Higgs production and in the MSSM parameter space.

Book excerpt: A search for the decay of the {tau} lepton to seven charged pions and at most one {pi}{sup 0} was performed using the BABAR detector at the PEP-II e{sup +}e{sup -} collider. The analysis uses data recorded on and near the {Upsilon}(4S) resonance between 1999 and 2003, a total of 124.3 fb{sup -1}. They observe 7 events with an expected background of 11.9 {+-} 2.2 events and calculate a preliminary upper limit of BR({tau}{sup -} {yields} 4{pi}{sup -} 3{pi}{sup +}({pi}{sup 0}){nu}{sub {tau}})

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A preliminary measurement of the branching fraction {Beta}({tau}{sup -} {yields} K{sup -}{pi}{sup 0}{nu}{sub {tau}}) is made using 124.4 fb{sup -1} of e{sup +}e{sup -} collision data provided by the PEP-II accelerator, operating primarily at {radical}s = 10.58 GeV, and recorded using the BABAR detector. They measure: {Beta}({tau}{sup -} {yields} K{sup -} {pi}{sup 0}{nu}{sub {tau}}) = (0.438 {+-} 0.004(stat) {+-} 0.022(syst))%. This result is the world's most precise measurement of this branching fraction to date and is consistent with the world average.
Book Synopsis Searches with Taus at the Tevatron by :
Download or read book Searches with Taus at the Tevatron written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We discuss tau identification techniques at hadron colliders, and present the measurements and the searches performed so far. We report on top quark pair production in the decay channel containing at least one tau lepton. Also, we present results dedicated to searches for new particles, with taus in the final state. We present a search for the charged Higgs boson in the tau decay channel, as well as for the leptoquark family containing tau leptons. Finally, we indicate the capabilities of detecting and triggering on tau leptons in the future collider run.
Book Synopsis Particle Detectors by : Hermann Kolanoski
Download or read book Particle Detectors written by Hermann Kolanoski and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-06-30 with total page 949 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the fundamentals of particle detectors as well as their applications. Detector development is an important part of nuclear, particle and astroparticle physics, and through its applications in radiation imaging, it paves the way for advancements in the biomedical and materials sciences. Knowledge in detector physics is one of the required skills of an experimental physicist in these fields. The breadth of knowledge required for detector development comprises many areas of physics and technology, starting from interactions of particles with matter, gas- and solid-state physics, over charge transport and signal development, to elements of microelectronics. The book's aim is to describe the fundamentals of detectors and their different variants and implementations as clearly as possible and as deeply as needed for a thorough understanding. While this comprehensive opus contains all the materials taught in experimental particle physics lectures or modules addressing detector physics at the Master's level, it also goes well beyond these basic requirements. This is an essential text for students who want to deepen their knowledge in this field. It is also a highly useful guide for lecturers and scientists looking for a starting point for detector development work.
