The solid angle-efficiency product of the detector for the rare decay .mu. .-->. e.gamma. was 1.2%. Hence, 3 x 101° .mu./sup +/ decays were examined. There is no indication of any signal, the data being consistent with a small background of random electron and gamma coincidences. The new upper limit on the branching ratio is GAMMA(.mu./sup +/ .-->. e/sup +/.gamma.)/GAMMA(.mu./sup +/ .-->. e/sup +/.nu./sub e/.nu.−/sub mu/)

Book excerpt: An experimental search for the lepton-family number nonconserving decay, .mu. .-->. e.gamma gamma., has been conducted at the Clinton P. Anderson Meson Physics Facility (LAMPF) using the Crystal Box detector. The detector consists of a modular NaI(Tl) calorimeter, scintillator hodoscope, and a high-resolution, cylindrical drift chamber. It provides a large solid-angle for detecting three-body decays and has good resolutions in the time, position, and energy measurements to eliminate unwanted backgrounds. No evidence for .mu.+ .-->. e+.gamma gamma. is found, giving an upper limit for the branching ratio of GAMMA(.mu. .-->. e.gamma gamma.)/GAMMA(.mu. .-->. e nu anti nu) less than or equal to 7.2 x 10−11 (90% C.L.). This result is an improvement of more than two orders of magnitude in the existing limit. 109 refs., 39 figs.

Book excerpt: The MEGA -experiment is a search for the decay [mu] [yields] [gamma], for which the present upper limit for the branching ratio is 4.9 [times] 10[sup [minus]11]. The observation of this decay would indicate the existence of physics outside the standard model of electroweak interactions. The experiment employs highly modular, fast detectors, state-of-the-art electronics, and a staged trigger with on-line filters. The detectors are contained in a 1.5 T solenoidal field produced by a superconducting magnet. Positrons axe confined to the central region and axe measured by a set of thin MWPCs with a designed energy resolution of 350 keV FWHM and angular resolution of 1 deg FWHM. Photons are measured by one of three layers of pair spectrometers in the outer region. The total photon detection efficiency is about 6%; the expected photon energy resolution is 1.7 MeV FWHM and the angular resolution is 10 deg FWHM. The time resolution between the photon and electron is 0.8 ns FWHM. About 10[sup 8] events that passed the on-line inters were recorded during the 1993 run. These data should have a branching ratio sensitivity approximately fifteen times better than the present limit. The measured resolutions are approaching the design values.

However, in many extensions to the standard model, separate lepton numbers are not expected to be conserved quantities. A new search for muon number non-conserving processes has been undertaken at the Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility (LAMPF), specifically to look for three neutrinoless decay modes of the muon. The search for the decay of a muon to an electron and a photon is discussed here. A new detector facility, located in the LAMPF stopped muon channel, was developed for this experiment. This Crystal Box detector consists of a cylindrical drift chamber surrounded by a plastic scintillator hodoscope and a large solid angle, modularized, NaI(Tl) calorimeter. The apparatus measures the trajectories, relative timing, and energies of charged particles and photons from the decays of positive muons stopped in a central target. The assembly and calibration of the detector are described, and the procedure for taking data is discussed. The sample of 1.3 million candidate events, from the first data run of the Crystal Box, was analyzed using a maximum-likelihood method. The upper limit on the branching ratio, relative to normal muon decay, for a muon decaying to an electron and a photon is found to be consistent with previous measurements. With 90% confidence, the branching ratio for this neutrinoless decay is observed to be less than 2.8 x 101°.

Book excerpt: A search has been performed for the decays .mu. .-->. eee, .mu. .-->. e.gamma., and .mu. .-->. e.gamma gamma. with a sensitivity in the branching ratios at the level of 10−1°. The experiment used a separated, 26 MeV/c .mu./sup +/ beam with an average intensity of 300kHz. A total of 2.2 x 1011 muon decays were examined for the present result. The detector for the experiment is the Crystal Box, which consists of a cylindrical drift chamber surrounded by 396 NaI(T1) crystals. A layer of scintillation counters in front of the crystals provided timing for electrons and veto for photons. The energy resolution for electrons and photons is approx. 6% (FWHM). The position resolution of the drift chamber is 350 .mu.m leading to a vertex cut with a rejection of 103 for .mu. .-->. eee. The timing resolution is approx. 300 ps the scintillators and approx. 1 ns from the crystals. No candidate for .mu. .-->. eee has been found, yielding an upper limit for the branching ratio of B/sub .mu. 3e/

Book excerpt: The MEGA experiment is a search for the decay [mu] [r-arrow] e[gamma]. Even though there is no fundamental reason to expect lepton number to be a conserved quantity, processes such as [mu] [r-arrow] e[gamma] have not been observed. (The present upper limit for the branching ratio for [mu] [r-arrow] e[gamma] is 4.9 x 10[sup [minus]11].) The minimal standard model of electroweak interactions, which is enormously successful, builds in lepton number conservation. However, the decay [mu] [r-arrow] e[gamma] is expected in many extensions to the standard model, in particular in supersymmetry models. The experimental signature for [mu] [r-arrow] e[gamma] from decays at rest is the observation of a positron and photon, each of 52.8 MeV, that are back-to-back, in time coincidence, and originate from a common spatial point. The MEGA detector consists of two spectrometers designed to measure the kinematic characteristics of positrons and photons to search for events with this signature. The primary difficulty in the analysis of these data has been the development of reconstruction algorithms that balance efficiency and resolution. Also, many calibrations and corrections are needed to get optimum resolutions. Most surviving candidate events are accidentals. Results of analysis are given.

This decay violates the empirically established rule of lepton family number conservation and lies outside the Standard Model of electroweak interactions. In order for the experiment to make a factor of 500 improvement over the existing limit, a new design was adopted that employs highly modular, fast detectors and state-of-the-art electronic readout. The detectors are contained in a 15 kG solenoidal field produced by a superconducting magnet. The central region is a positron spectrometer, and the outer region is four layers of pair spectrometers. Data taking is expected to commence in 1989. 6 refs., 3 figs.

This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: This thesis presents a direct search for lepton-flavour violating (LFV) decays of the Higgs boson using data from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV delivered by the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and recorded by the ATLAS detector at CERN. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 138.4 1/fb collected during Run 2 of the LHC which lasted from 2015 to 2018. The search in this thesis is focused on the decays H -> e tau and H -> mu tau. Only leptonic decays of the tau-lepton leading to different-flavour final states are considered in order to suppress background contributions from Drell-Yan production. Two signal regions (VBF SR and nonVBF SR) are defined, targeting different production processes of the Higgs boson thereby allowing for exploiting the characteristic topology of the vector-boson-fusion (VBF) production. Individual neural networks are trained in each of the two signal regions aiming at classifying each collision event to be signal or background. This is achieved by assigning a probability value to each event quantifying how signal-like it is. The resulting probability distribution is used as final discriminant in the statistical analysis. For background estimation, the so-called "Symmetry Method" is used which exploits the fact that Standard-Model processes are symmetric with respect to an exchange of electrons with muons and vice versa at the high energies prevalent at the LHC. The two LFV decays H -> e tau and H -> mu tau, on the contrary, break this symmetry as long as their branching ratios (BR) are of different size since systematic differences of the kinematic properties of the electron and muon are implied within each decay. The differing branching ratios are motivated by a bound on the product of the two LFV couplings derived from mu -> e gamma. The usage of the "Symmetry Method" allows for an estimation of the background mainly based on data and hence reduces the dependence on simulated events. However, it also implies that the analysis is only sensitive to the difference in branching ratios of H -> e tau and H -> mu tau and does not allow for measuring their absolute values. The difference in branching ratios, Delta = BR(H -> mu tau) - BR(H -> e tau), is measured to be (0.25+/-0.10)% which indicates that the data favours a larger branching ratio for the decay H -> mu tau than for the decay H -> e tau with a significance of 2.5 sigma. An upper limit at 95% confidence level of 0.42% is set on the difference Delta, the expected limit is (0.19+0.08/-0.05)%. Combinations with partner analyses which use templates from simulations for background estimation are performed, assuming the respective other LFV signal to be zero. Observed (expected) upper limits at 95% confidence level on the branching ratios of the decays H -> e tau and H -> mu tau are derived to be 0.23% ((0.12+0.05/-0.03)%) and 0.17% ((0.09+0.04/-0.03)%), respectively
