Book excerpt: The authors present a search for excited and exotic muon states [mu]*, conducted using an integrated luminosity of 371 pb−1 of data collected in p{bar p} collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV at the Tevatron with the CDF II detector. They search for associated production of [mu][mu]* followed by the decay [mu]* → [mu][gamma], resulting in the [mu][mu][gamma] final state. They compare the data to model predictions as a function of the mass of the excited muon M{sub [mu]*}, the compositeness energy scale [Lambda], and the gauge coupling factor f. No signal above the standard model expectation is observed in the [mu][gamma] mass spectrum. In the contact interaction model, they exclude 107

The data have been collected with the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider and correspond to an integrated luminosity of approximately 380 pb−1. We search for [mu]* in the process p{bar p} → [mu]*[nu], with the [mu]* subsequently decaying to a muon plus photon. No excess above the standard model expectation is observed in data. Interpreting our data in the context of a model that describes [mu]* production by four-fermion contact interactions and [mu]* decay via electroweak processes, we exclude production cross sections higher than 0.057 pb-0.112 pb at the 95% confidence level, depending on the mass of the excited muon. Choosing the scale for contact interactions to be [Lambda] = 1 TeV, excited muon masses below 618 GeV are excluded.

Excited muons are sought in the channel ${pp}\to \mu {\mu }^{* }\to \mu \mu \ {\rm{jet}}\;{\rm{jet}}$, assuming both the production and decay occur via a contact interaction. The analysis is based on 20.3 fb-1 of pp collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}\;=\;8\;{\rm{TeV}}$ taken with the ATLAS detector at the large hadron collider. No evidence of excited muons is found, and limits are set at the 95% confidence level on the cross section times branching ratio as a function of the excited-muon mass ${m}_{{\mu }^{* }}$. For ${m}_{{\mu }^{* }}$ between 1.3 and 3.0 TeV, the upper limit on $\sigma B({\mu }^{* }\to \mu q\bar{q}$) is between 0.6 and 1 fb. Limits on $\sigma B$ are converted to lower bounds on the compositeness scale [Lambda]. In the limiting case ${\rm{\Lambda }}={m}_{{\mu }^{* }}$, excited muons with a mass below 2.8 TeV are excluded. With the same model assumptions, these limits at larger ${\mu }^{* }$ masses improve upon previous limits from traditional searches based on the gauge-mediated decay ${\mu }^{* }\to \mu \gamma $.

Book excerpt: The authors present a search for the production of excited or exotic muons ({mu}*) via the reaction {bar p} + p {yields} {mu}* + {mu} {yields} {mu}{gamma}+{mu} using 371 pb{sup -1} of data collected with the Run II CDF detector. In this signature-based search, we look for a resonance in the {mu}{gamma} mass spectrum. The data are compared to standard model and detector background expectations, and with predictions of excited muon production. We use these comparisons to set limits on the {mu}* mass and compositeness scale {Lambda} in contact interaction and gauge-mediated models.

In some extended Higgs models, a light neutral scalar Higgs boson is produced with suppressed couplings to fermions and standard model(SM) strength couplings to vector bosons(bosonic Higgs), thus enhancing the H[yields][gamma][gamma] channel. We required one photon in the event with E[sup[gamma]][sub T]> 20 GeV, [vert-bar][eta][sup[gamma]][vert-bar]1.1 or 1.5[vert-bar][eta][sup[gamma]][vert-bar]2.0 and a second photon with E[sup[gamma]][sub T] 15 GeV, [vert-bar][eta][sup[gamma]][vert-bar]1.1 or 1.5[vert-bar][eta][sup[gamma]][vert-bar]

Book excerpt: The authors present results of a search for diphoton resonances produced inclusively and in association with a vector boson using 100 pb[sup[minus]1] of p[anti p] collisions using the CDF detector. They set upper limits on the product of cross section times branching ratio for p[anti p][r-arrow][gamma][gamma][r-arrow] X and p[anti p][r-arrow][gamma][gamma][r-arrow] W/Z. Using a NLO prediction for associated production cross section of a Higgs with a vector boson (W or Z), they set an upper limit on the branching ratio for H[r-arrow][gamma][gamma]. They set a lower limit on the mass of a'bosophilic' Higgs boson (e.g. one which couples only to[gamma], W, and Z bosons with Standard Model couplings) of 82 GeV/c[sup 2] at 95% C.L.

Book excerpt: We study the processes e{sup +}e{sup -} {yields} (J/{psi}{gamma}{gamma}){gamma} and e{sup +}e{sup -} {yields} (J/{psi}{pi}{sup -}{pi}{sup +}){gamma} where the hard photon radiated from an initial e{sup +}e{sup -} collision with center-of-mass (CM) energy near 10.58 GeV is detected. In the final state J/{psi}{gamma}{gamma} we consider J/{psi}{pi}{sup 0}, J/{psi}{eta}, {chi}{sub c1}{gamma}, and {chi}c{sub 2}{gamma} candidates. The invariant mass of the hadronic final state defines the effective e{sup +}e{sup -} CM energy in each event, so these data can be compared with direct e{sup +}e{sup -} measurements. We report 90% CL upper limits for the integrated cross section times branching fractions of the J/{psi}{gamma}{gamma} channels in the Y (4260) mass region.

Book excerpt: Muon beamlines such as the one being designed for the MECO experiment will provide a large increase in muon stopping rates, allowing for possible large increases in sensitivity to {mu} {yields} e{gamma}. As higher-power proton-drivers become available, even higher rates will become possible. We have analyzed the capabilities of a detector for {mu} {yields} e{gamma} using pixel detectors to track the positron, and a conversion pair from the photon. We find that an initial detector with a beamline comparable to MECO and 10% of the coverage of the MEGA experiment can already be competitive with experiments currently under construction with a modest amount of live-time. By increasing the coverage and running longer, it should be possible to go further. We have found that the accidental backgrounds depend strongly on the thickness of the photon converter, providing a way to make continued major progress as improved pixel detectors and more intense muon sources become available.

Book excerpt: We report on a measurement of small angle muon production (2.4[vert-bar][ital y][sup[mu]][vert-bar]3.2) in[ital p][ital[anti p]] collisions at[radical]s= 1.8 TeV with the D[null] detector at Fermilab. We have determined the fraction of the inclusive[mu] cross section in this region due to[ital b]-quark production and decay. Combining this measurement with our previously measured cross section in the central region, we calculate[ital d][sigma]/[ital dy] for muons from[ital b] decay with[ital p][sup[mu]][sub T] 5 GeV/c and[ital p][sup[mu]][sub T] 8 GeV/c. These measurements are compared to next-to-leading order QCD calculations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Searching for decays that change total lepton family number is an excellent method to explore potential physics beyond the Standard Model because those processes are predicted to be zero except when new physics is present. Essentially all extensions of the Standard Model that introduce new, heavy particles predict the existence of these rare decays, though the most probable channel is highly model dependent. Recently, the prejudice has grown within the physics community that supersymmetry is an extension that is likely to be related to nature. Barbieri, Hall, and Strumia show that rare decays are signatures for grand unified supersymmetry and calculate the rates for [mu][sup +] [r-arrow] e[sup +][gamma] and related processes for a wide range of parameters of these models. They conclude that [mu][sup +] [r-arrow] e[sup +][gamma] has the largest rate by more than two orders of magnitude, and it ranges between the current experimental limit and 10[sup [minus]14]. Hence, there is continuing interest in the community for an experiment that could have a sensitivity near 10[sup [minus]14]. Lessons are drawn from the experience of the MEGA experiment in searching for [mu][sup +] to e[sup +][gamma]. In light of that experience, some ideas are evaluated regarding new searches that might take place in the ERA of a source of low-energy muons associated with a muon collider.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The?1(1600), a J{sup PC} = 1{sup {-+}} exotic meson has been observed by experiments using pion beams. Theorists predict that photon beams could produce gluonic hybrid mesons, of which the?1(1600) is a candidate, at enhanced levels relative to pion beams. The g12 rungroup at Jefferson Lab's CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) has recently acquired a large photoproduction dataset, using a liquid hydrogen target and tagged photons from a 5.71 GeV electron beam. A partial-wave analysis of 502K?p →??+?−n events selected from the g12 dataset has been performed, and preliminary fit results show strong evidence for well-known states such as the a1(1260), a2(1320), and?2(1670). However, we observe no evidence for the production of the?1(1600) in either the partial-wave intensities or the relative complex phase between the 1{sup {-+}} and the 2{sup {-+}} (corresponding to the?2) partial waves.
