Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using 385 fb−1 of ee− collision data collected at center-of-mass energies around 10.6 GeV, we search for time-integrated CP violation in the Cabibbo-suppressed decays D°/{bar D}° →?−?+?° and D°/{bar D}° → K−K+?° with both model-independent and model-dependent methods. Measurements of the asymmetries in amplitudes of flavor states and CP eigenstates provide constraints on theories beyond the Standard Model, some of which predict CP violation in amplitudes at the 1% level or higher. We find no evidence of CP violation and hence no conflict with the Standard Model.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our current understanding of the fundamental building blocks of the Universe, summarised by the Standard Model of particle physics, is incomplete. For example, it fails to explain why we do not see equal, or almost equal, numbers of particles and their antiparticle partners. To explain this asymmetry requires, among other effects, a mechanism known as charge-parity (CP) violation that causes differences between the rates at which particles and antiparticles decay. CP violation is seen in systems containing bottom and strange quarks, but not in those with up, charm or top quarks. This thesis describes searches for particle-antiparticle asymmetries in the decay rates of charmed mesons. No evidence of CP violation is found. With current sensitivities, an asymmetry large enough to observe probably could not be explained by the Standard Model. Instead an explanation could come from new physics, for example contributions from supersymmetric or other undiscovered heavy particles. In the thesis, the development of new techniques to search for these asymmetries is described. They are applied to data from the LHCb experiment at CERN to make precise measurements of asymmetries in the D^+->K^-K^+pi^+ decay channel. This is the most promising charged D decay for CP violation searches.

This book was released on 2007 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presented are the results of a search for direct CP violation in Cabibbo-suppressed decays of D° to two charged daughters. The analysis described was performed on ≈230 fb−1 of the BABAR data sample, recorded at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center and using the PEP-II electron storage rings. We measure CP asymmetries for decay to the KK and [pi][pi] final states, as well as for the branching ratio, and develop a new technique for tagging-efficiency correction using the Cabibbo-favored K[pi] final state. We find some evidence for CP violation in decays to the KK final state and results that suggest CP violation in the [pi][pi] final state as well.

Download or read book Search for CP Violation in Singly Cabibbo Suppressed Four-body D Decays written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We search for CP violation in a sample of 4.7 x 104 singly Cabibbo suppressed D0 2!K+ K- [pi]+[pi]- decays and 1.8(2.6) x 104 D(s)+ 2!KS0 K+ [pi]+ [pi]- decays. CP violation is searched for in the difference between the T-odd asymmetries, obtained using triple product correlations, measured for D and D decays. The measured CP violation parameters are AT(D0) = (1.0 ± 5.1(stat) ± 4.4(syst)) x 10-3, AT(D+) = ( -11.96 ± 10.04(stat) ± 4.81(syst)) x 10-3 and AT(Ds+) = ( -13.57 ± 7.67(stat) ± 4.82(syst)) x 10-3. This search for CP violation showed that the T-odd correlations are a powerful tool to measure the CP violating observable AT. The relative simplicity of an analysis based on T-odd correlations and the high quality results that can be obtained, allow to consider this tool as fundamental to search for CP violation in four-body decays. Even if the CP violation has not been found, excluding any New Physics effect to the sensitivity of about 0.5%, it is still worth to search for CP violation in D decays. The high statistics that can be obtained at the LHC or by the proposed high luminosity B-factories, make this topic to be considered in high consideration by experiments such as LHCb, SuperB or SuperBelle. The results outlined in this thesis strongly suggest to include a similar analysis into the Physics program of these experiments.

Book excerpt: This 2nd edition is an extensive update of "B Decays?. The revisions are necessary because of the extensive amount of new data and new theoretical ideas. This book reviews what is known about b-quark decays and also looks at what can be learned in the future. The importance of this research area is increasing, as evidenced by the approval of the luminosity upgrade for CESR and the asymmetric B factories at SLAC and KEK, and the possibility of experiments at hadron colliders. The key experimental observations made thus far, measurement of the lifetimes of the different B species, B0-B0 mixing, the discovery of ?Penguin? mediated decays, and the extraction of the CKM matrix elements Vub and Vcb from semileptonic decays, as well as more mundane results, are described in great detail by the experimentalists who have been closely involved with making the measurements. Theoretical progress in understanding b-quark decays using HQET and lattice gauge techniques are described by theorists who have developed and used these techniques.Synthesizing the experimental and theoretical information, several articles discuss the implications for the ?Standard Model? and how further tests can be done using measurements of CP violation in the B system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using data from the Mark III detector at the $esp+esp-$ storage ring at SPEAR, an upper limit of.30 at the 90% confidence level is set on the magnitude of the CP asymmetry $Asb{cp}$ for the CP eigenstate $Dsp0to Ksp+Ksp-.$ This falls within the preexisting limit of.45 @ 90% CL set by FNAL experiment E687 using the same decay. The first measurement of $Asb{cp}$ is made for two other CP eigenstates, $Dsp0to Ksbsp{s}{0}Ksbsp{s}{0}$ and $Dsp0to pisp+pisp-.$ An upper limit for the branching ratio for the decay, $Dsp0to Ksp-pisp+pisp0pisp0pisp0,$ for which evidence was found in the process of measuring $Asb{cp},$ is set at 12.1%.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the idea of considering three-body decays with final state B to DKpi in the pursuit of the notoriously elusive unitary angle gamma, the initial steps towards its measurement are presented. Using a sample of approximately 88 million BBbar pairs collected with the BaBar detector at the PEP-II collider, a measurement of the branching fractions BO to D+- KO pi-+ and BO to D*+- KO pi-+ are presented for the entire Dalitz region: Br(BO to D+- KO pi-+) = (4.97 +- 0.69 +- 0.55) x 10^(-4) Br(BO to D*+- KO pi-+) = (3.00 +- 0.66 +- 0.29) x 10^(-4). In both decay modes the dominant resonance is the K*+-(892) between the neutral kaon and the charged pion. Measuring the branching fractions of the corresponding resonant two-body decays yields: Br(BO to D+- K*-+) = (4.78 +- 0.58 +- 0.53) x 10^(-4) Br(BO to D*+- K*-+) = (3.22 +- 0.59 +- 0.29) x 10^(-4). Performing a time-dependent CP asymmetries fit of the resonant decay mode BO to D+- K*-+ yields: C = 0.93 +- 0.18 +- 0.03 ABS[lambda] = 0.19 +- 0.25 +- 0.04 S = 0.18 +- 0.28 +- 0.02 Delta S = 0.08 +- 0.28 +- 0.02. As the amplitude ratio ABS[lambda] is consistant with zero, no interference sensitive to gamma can be established at this point.

This book was released on 2013-10-17 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes a high-quality, high-precision method for the data analysis of an interesting elementary particle reaction. The data was collected at the Japanese B-meson factory KEKB with the Belle detector, one of the most successful large-scale experiments worldwide. CP violation is a subtle quantum effect that makes the world look different when simultaneously left and right and matter and antimatter are exchanged. This being a prerequisite for our own world to have developed from the big bang, there are only a few experimental indications of such effects, and their detection requires very intricate techniques. The discovery of CP violation in B meson decays garnered Kobayashi and Maskawa, who had predicted these findings as early as 1973, the 2008 Nobel prize in physics. This thesis describes in great detail what are by far the best measurements of branching ratios and CP violation parameters in two special reactions with two charm mesons in the final state. It presents an in-depth but accessible overview of the theory, phenomenology, experimental setup, data collection, Monte Carlo simulations, (blind) statistical data analysis, and systematic uncertainty studies.
