Book excerpt: A search is presented for massive spin-1 Z' resonances decaying to a top quark and a heavy vector-like top quark partner T. The search is based on a 2.6 inverse femtobarns sample of proton-proton collisions at 13 TeV collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. The analysis is optimized for final states in which the T quark decays to a W boson and a bottom quark. The focus is on all-jet final states in which both the W boson and the top quark decay into quarks that evolve into jets. The decay products of the top quark and of the W boson are assumed to be highly Lorentz-boosted and cannot be reconstructed as separate jets, but are instead reconstructed as merged, wide jets. Techniques for the identification of jet substructure and jet flavour are used to distinguish signal from background events. Several models for Z' bosons decaying to T quarks are excluded at 95% confidence level, with upper limits on the cross section ranging from 0.13 to 10 pb, depending on the chosen hypotheses. This is the first search for a neutral spin-1 heavy resonance decaying to a top quark and a vector-like T quark in the all-hadronic final state.

Book excerpt: During 2012, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has delivered proton-proton collisions at 8 TeV center of mass energy to the ATLAS and CMS experiments. These two experiments have been designed to discover the Higgs boson and to search for new particles predicted by several theoretical models, as supersymmetry. The Higgs boson has been discovered by ATLAS and CMS experiments on July, 4th of 2012, starting a new era of discoveries in particle physics domain. With the confirmation of the existence of the Higgs boson, searches for new physics involving this boson are of major interest. In particular, data can be used to look for new massive particles that decay into the Higgs boson accompanied with other particles of the standard model. One expected signature is a Higgs boson produced with a top quark, the two heaviest particles in the standard model. The standard model predicts a cross section of top-Higgs production, then any enhancement of their associated production will be a clear signature of physics beyond the standard model. In addition, the existence of physics beyond the standard model can also be reflected by resonances that decay into a top-quark and a Higgs boson. In the first part of my work I describe the theoretical and experimental foundations of the standard model, as well as the experimental device. In the same theoretical chapter, I also discuss the formulation of an extension of the standard model. In addition, I describe a feasibility study of a search of one of the particles predicted by such model. The second part contains the realization of the search for a top partner, T_, within the CMS experiment. This top partner is a new particle very similar to the standard model top quark, but much heavier, that can decay into a top quark and a Higgs boson. The analysis looks for this particle in the full hadronic final state, where the Higgs boson decays into two b-quarks and the top quark decays into three standard model quarks, a b and two light quarks. In this channel, I reconstruct its mass from the identification of all its decay products. As a result of the analysis, I show the limits on the T_ production cross section from the number of observed events in the specific signature.

Events consistent with the flavor-changing-neutral-current decay of a T quark to a top quark and a Z boson are selected by requiring two leptons from the Z-boson decay, as well as an additional isolated charged lepton. In a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.14 inverse femtobarns, the number of observed events is found to be consistent with the standard model background prediction. Assuming a branching fraction of 100% for the decay T to tZ, a T quark with a mass less than 475 GeV/c2̂ is excluded at the 95% confidence level.

A searche for t' --> Wb in events containing a lepton and four or more jets is conducted. By performing a fit to the two-dimensional distribution of total transverse energy versus reconstructed t' quark mass, we set upper limits on the t't̄' pair production cross section and exclude a standard model fourth-generation t' quark decaying to Wb with mass below 358 GeV/c2 at 95% CL.

No significant excess above the standard model background prediction is observed. We set 95% Bayesian credibility mass-dependent upper limits on the heavy charged-particle production cross section times branching ratio to tb. Using a standard model extension with a W' → tb and left-right-symmetric couplings as a benchmark model, we constrain the W' mass and couplings in the 300-900 GeV/c2 range. As a result, the limits presented here are the most stringent for a charged resonance with mass in the range 300-600 GeV/c2 decaying to top and bottom quarks.

Book excerpt: "The intriguing nature of the top quark, by far the heaviest particle in the Standard Model of particle physics, has motivated the development of many theoretical extensions predicting the existence of new massive particles decaying to a pair of top-antitop quarks. The production of these hypothetical particles in proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider would reveal itself as a resonance in the expected smooth distribution of the top-antitop quark invariant mass. This thesis presents a search for such a new heavy particle decaying to a pair of top-antitop quarks in the semi-leptonic final state. The analyzed data sample amounts to a total of 4.6 fb-1 at a proton-proton collision center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. Novel techniques specifically tailored to the identification of the decay products of highly energetic top quarks are developed and used. No evidence for resonant production of pairs of top-antitop quarks is found and, as a result, constraints are set on two theoretical models. Upper limits on the production cross-section times branching ratio are established at a 95% credibility level for a leptophobic Zʹ boson from the Topcolor model, and a Kaluza-Klein gluon from the Randall-Sundrum model. The Zʹ boson and the Kaluza-Klein gluon are excluded to exist (at a 95% credibility level) in the mass ranges 0.8-1.65 TeV and 0.8-1.88 TeV, respectively. The constraints de- rived in this thesis on the two theoretical models are more stringent than the ones obtained at other experiments, thanks to the large center-of-mass energy and the dedicated high-energy top quark identification techniques used." --

Combining the results of the l nu quark anti-quark and quark anti-quark quark anti-quark final states, cross section and mass exclusion limits are set for models that predict heavy spin-1 and spin-2 resonances. This is the first search for a narrow-width spin-2 resonance at sqrt(s) = 13 TeV.
