Book excerpt: The future telecom ecosystem will be composed by a set of heterogeneous wireless and cellular networks and user terminal capable to connect and communicate with any of these networks. This thesis contributes for evolution of convergence of wireless heterogeneous networks and to propose novel mechanisms to support low latency handover at authentication level using network selection, security context management and mobility in future telecom ecosystem to allow ubiquitous access to the Internet and services to any individual on the move. This access should be possible anytime anywhere while ensuring the right level of security to the end users as well to the networks. One main objective of the thesis is to define seamless secured roaming mechanisms to enable subscribers or users to roam along different access networks indifferent of access technologies, operators and accessing mechanisms. The proposed thesis provides a roaming & interworking solution using intermediary entity, called Roaming Interworking Intermediary (RII), which enable the secure handover across different access systems and different operator domains without service interruption. RII acts like a broker in the RII architecture between home and visited operator networks. RII provides mobility management, context transfer between service providers, security architecture for authentication and associations of users while roaming, network and presence management. The thesis also defines new mechanisms to enable low latency during handovers and roaming by optimizing and introducing new authentication and mobility models (post handover techniques) in heterogeneous networks. We have provided new methods to solve ever longing issue of user identity and routing of user authentication information from visiting access networks with or without a direct SLA with the home network. We have introduced dynamic authentication model with the proposed RII architecture where a user or subscriber gets authenticated at the visiting network without re-routing authentication information to home networks. The thesis also propose a new mobility mechanisms based on Proxy Mobile IP and extending AAA infrastructure to obtain very low latency during handover in WLAN, WIMAX and 3G networks. Testbeds and comparative studies between proposed and existing models for authentication and mobility are provided. This thesis also provides novel pre handover techniques in heterogeneous networks to ensure seamless handover during mobility and roaming. This method is a network centric approach where the access networks controls whole procedures of network selection, security, mobility etc... with the help of mobile terminals and visiting networks. Therefore, new models for location prediction based Network selection, security context management for authentications, context based mobility models are proposed in this thesis. New supporting protocols and extensions of existing protocol to achieve seamless handovers are proposed in this work. A full testbed is built with the implementation of the proposed protocols to evaluate the proposed of the efficiency of the proposed mechanisms.

Book excerpt: Heterogeneous wireless networking, which is sometimes referred to as the fourth-generation (4G) wireless, is a new frontier in the future wireless communications technology and there has been a growing interest on this topic among researchers and engineers in both academia and industry. This book will include a set of research and survey articles featuring the recent advances in theory and applications of heterogeneous wireless networking technology for the next generation (e.g., fourth generation) wireless communications systems. With the rapid growth in the number of wireless applications, services and devices, using a single wireless technology such as a second generation (2G) and third generation (3G) wireless system would not be efficient to deliver high speed data rate and quality-of-service (QoS) support to mobile users in a seamless way. Fourth generation (4G) wireless systems are devised with the vision of heterogeneity in which a mobile user/device will be able to connect to multiple wireless networks (e.g., WLAN, cellular, WMAN) simultaneously. This book intends to provide a unified view on the state-of-the-art of protocols and architectures for heterogeneous wireless networking. The contributed articles will cover both the theoretical concepts and system-level implementation issues related to design, analysis, and optimization of architectures and protocols for heterogeneous wireless access networks.

Book excerpt: Heterogeneous wireless networks (HWNs) provide flexible and diversified wireless network access (e.g., cellular, IEEE 802.11) by integrating cellular networks, wireless LANs, and ad hoc networks with the Internet. It has been emerging as a promising solution to offer a variety of exciting applications, anytime and anywhere. The flexibility and benefits of the HWN, for example, is to extend the service coverage of the existing cellular and WLAN infrastructure, to improve the communication throughput, and reduce packet transmission latency, based on availability of different types of radio network in the roaming area (cellular, WLAN, or others). In the study, we answer some fundamental questions in the design and deployment of a HWN. The first is how to effectively operate a mobile terminal in ad hoc mode to access the Internet through a cellular network, WLAN or other underlying wireless access networks. The second is how to design ubiquitous seamless mobility support for a roaming user, allowing ubiquitous and bi-directional Internet accessibility, connectivity, and mobility. Finally, it answers the questions that what is the security threats for a mobile terminal that is operating in the ad hoc mode, and how to provide information confidentiality for a continuously moving mobile terminal.

Book excerpt: The recent years have seen an enormous advance in wireless communication technology and co-existence of various types of wireless networks, which requires effective inter-networking among the heterogeneous wireless networks in order to support user roaming over the networks while maintaining the connectivity. One of main challenges to achieve the connectivity over heterogeneous wireless networks is potential intermittent connections caused by user roaming. The issue is how to maintain the connection as the user roams and how to ensure service quality in the presence of a long disconnection period. In this dissertation, we apply the delay tolerant network (DTN) framework to heterogeneous terrestrial wireless networks, and propose a system architecture to achieve the connectivity in the presence of excessive long delays and intermittent paths. We study several possible approaches, discuss the applicability of each of the approaches and propose the super node architecture. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed super node architecture, we give a simulation study that compares the system performance under the super node architecture and under the epidemic based architecture. Within the proposed architecture that employs the idea of super nodes, we further study how to effectively route a message over access networks. We present a new routing technique for mobile ad-hoc networks (MANETs) based on the DTN system architecture. We introduce the concept of virtual network topology and redefine the dominating-set based routing for the challenged network environment under consideration. In addition, we propose a time based methodology to predict the probability of future contacts between node pairs to construct the virtual network topology. We present a simulation study that demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed routing approach as compared with the epidemic routing, and that the time based technique for predicting the future contacts gives better performance compared with that using the number of previous contacts. We further extend the dominating set routing technique through analyzing the underlying node mobility model. We shed some light on how using node mobility model can improve contact probability estimation. Based on our findings we propose a new algorithm that improves the routing performance by minimizing the selected dominating set size.

Book excerpt: Integration of the Internet with a Cellular Network, WMAN, WLAN, and MANET presents an exceptional promise by having co-existence of conventional WWANs/WMANs/WLANs with wireless ad hoc networks to provide ubiquitous communication. We call such integrated networks providing internet accessibility for mobile users as heterogeneous multi-hop wireless networks where the Internet and wireless infrastructure such as WLAN access points (APs) and base stations (BSs) constitute the backbone for various emerging wireless networks (e.g., multi-hop WLAN and ad hoc networks). Earlier approaches for the Internet connectivity either provide only unidirectional connectivity for ad hoc hosts or cause high overhead as well as delay for providing full bi-directional connections. In this dissertation, a new protocol is proposed for integrated Internet and ad hoc networks for supporting bi-directional global connectivity for ad hoc hosts. In order to provide efficient mobility management for mobile users in an integrated network, a mobility management protocol called multi-hop cellular IP (MCIP) has been proposed to provide a micro-mobility management framework for heterogeneous multi-hop network. The micro-mobility is achieved by differentiating the local domain from global domain. At the same time, the MCIP protocol extends Mobile IP protocol for providing macro-mobility support between local domains either for single hop MSs or multi-hop MSs. In the MCIP protocol, new location and mobility management approaches are developed for tracking mobile stations, paging, and handoff management. This dissertation also provides a security protocol for integrated Internet and MANET to establish distributed trust relationships amongst mobile infrastructures. This protocol protects communication between two mobile stations against the attacks either from the Internet side or from wireless side. Moreover, a secure macro/micro-mobility protocol (SM 3 P) have been introduced and evaluated for preventing mobility-related attacks either for single-hop MSs or multi-hop MSs. In the proposed SM 3 P, mobile IP security has been extended for supporting macro-mobility across local domains through the process of multi-hop registration and authentication. In a local domain, a certificate-based authentication achieves the effective routing and micro-mobility protection from a range of potential security threats.
