Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this report is to relate information collected on the design, construction, and performance of streets in Peculiar, Missouri, which were surface treated with a seal coat using asphalt emulsions. The surface treatment was a success using asphalt emulsions except for the prime coat. The prime coat would pick up on car tires even after a waiting period of four hours before applying the surface coat. The prime coat should probably not be used unless the underlying aggregate surface is slightly scarified to get penetration of the prime coat.

Download or read book Chip Seal Best Practices written by Douglas D. Gransberg and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2005 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Synthesis 342: Chip Seal Best Practices examines ways to assist in the development and implementation of pavement preservation programs by identifying the benefits of using chip seal as part of a preventive maintenance program and by highlighting advanced chip seal programs in use around the world. The report includes approximately 40 best practices in the areas of chip seal design methods, contract administration, equipment practices, construction practices, and performance measures. According to the report, the increased use of chip seals for maintenance can be a successful, cost-effective way of using preventive maintenance to preserve both low-volume and higher-volume pavements.
Book Synopsis Placement and evaluation of a seal coat using emulsified asphalt by : Fred E. Atnip
Download or read book Placement and evaluation of a seal coat using emulsified asphalt written by Fred E. Atnip and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increased concern for the environment and spiraling prices for petroleum products have brought about an increased interest in the use of emulsified asphalts in highway construction. This emphasis has been primarily in the construction of chip seals using emulsions. In order to assess design and construction procedures, as well as roadway performance, an experimental emulsified asphalt seal coat was placed in Texas. The material selected for the chip seal was a CRS-2 emulsified asphalt with a design rate of emulsion at .35 - 40 gallons/square yard. The aggregate was Type B, Grade 4A, at a coverage rate of 1 cubic yard per 110-120 yard of surface. This report describes the construction procedures, material costs, energy consumption and savings, and performance of the section to date.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This report documents the three-year evaluation of a slurry seal study undertaken as part of FHWA Demonstration Project No. 55, "Asphalt Emulsions for Highway Construction". The objective of this study was to collect information on the design, construction, and performance of a two-course asphalt emulsion slurry seal for mainline surface treatment. The study evaluates the potential extension of useful pavement life of the existing pavement and the adequacy of skid resistance of that material for a three-year period on mainline, moderately traveled bituminous pavements"--Technical report documentation page.

This book was released on 1980 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the past several year Kossuth County has had a scheduled maintenance program of bituminous seal coating. This program has been used to maintain the 467 miles of asphaltic concrete surfaced roads in Kossuth County. Since most of the experience that Kossuth County had in seal coating was with cutback asphalt, it was decided to include the use of emulsified asphalt in Kossuth County's 1980 seal coat program. Federal Demonstration Project Funds were requested from the Federal Highway Administration to study the use of emulsified asphalt and funding was granted under Demonstration Project No. 55,:Asphalt Emulsions for Highway Construction." Items studied were design and construction procedure cost of alternate material, energy consumption and environmental considerations. A construction contract was awarded to Everds Brothers, Inc. of Algona, Iowa, on July 1, 1980. There were four bidders on the 54.5 miles of seal coating that was let. A map showing the location of the seal coating projects is shown in Appendix A, and a copy of the contract is shown in Appendix B. The contractor started the project on July 11, 1980 and completed the project on August 1, 1980. Construction inspection and follow-up inspections of the project were conducted by personnel of the Kossuth County Engineer's Office and testing of the materials, friction testing and road rater testing were conducted by the Material's Department of the Iowa Department of Transportation
