Cruise Books are Informal and nonofficial in nature (they sometimes are compared to college yearbooks) These publications offer insights into the daily activities and attitudes from the perspective of a unit's crew. Cruise books dating from the World War II years are rare today, but they are of special note because of the intense interest by veterans, writers, and scholars in a conflict that involved the entire American nation and engulfed most of the rest of the world. Care has been taken to render the best copy possible. However, quality of this book is based on the condition of the original, and current technology available. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a compilation of histories-both personal and general-including all Seabee units that served on Iwo but concentrating primarily on the U.S. Naval 133rd Naval Construction Battalion (Seabees) that was part of the 4th MARDIV at Iwo Jima. Numerous stories from individuals and news journalists are included to give the reader different perspectives and a thorough overview of the Seabee Iwo Jima experience. The bloody battle on Iwo's beaches and the build-out of the Island are included in detail. Over 200 images are included. The book begins by describing the island and the importance of it from the perspective of both the American and Japanese sides. It tells of the heroic and painful taking of Iwo Jima (Sulphur Island) by the Marines, and of the little known story of the 133rd Seabees that accompanied them during the fiercest part of the assault. Personal stories from the men of the 133rd Seabees are told and numerous pictures are included. A well written colorful chapter about the Seabees on Iwo--by the famous William Bradford Huie--is also included and provides an insight into what the Seabees were, their personalities, their developing lore, and what they sacrificed and accomplished for their country. Another well written chapter by Commander Edmund L. Castillo, USN from his book; The Seabees of World War II is also included. Other Iwo Jima Seabee unit histories are also included. Some of these units--or elements of them--were also part of the initial landing, and others came later. In total, over 7000 builder-fighter Seabees served on Iwo. The story is also about building Iwo's 3 airstrips and the supporting infrastructure built by the Seabees; its runways became some of the longest in the Pacific. A small city was formed on Iwo for thousands of Marine, Navy, Army, Army-Air Force, Seabees and Coast Guard men. The successful take-over of Iwo Jima meant that our heavy bombers--with their fighter escorts--were now within 650 miles of the Japanese mainland. Japan's "inner defenses" were now crushed thus portending the war's outcome. The cost in human life was grim. Part IV describes the 133rd's other battle; the on-going battle for the award of the PUC (Presidential Unit Citation). Hopefully this book will serve as a reinforcement in that quest. This book-with its collection of histories-is designed to serve future generations as a near single-source of information about the critical accomplishments that the men of the Navy Seabees achieved on Iwo Jima--especially the 133rd Seabees.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this rousing sequel to his classic Can Do! The Story of the Seabees, William Bradford Huie continues the saga of the combat trained civilian plumbers, carpenters, heavy equipment operators, wharf builders, and civil engineers who served in the U.S. Navy construction battalions. The story begins in 1944 with the battle for Iwo Jima when the Seabees braved concentrated enemy fire and Iwo's daunting terrain to rig floating causeways, blow up wrecked landing craft, and drive their bulldozers up three terraces that rose from the ocean to secure the beachhead. This book fully chronicles their heroism, including the unforgettable efforts of the men of the 31st Battalion who crawled the length of a landing strip to pick up shrapnel as Japanese snipers fired away. Huie does equal justice to the historic actions of the Seabees on D-Day at Omaha Beach, where they manned fifteen hundred vehicles during the first wave of landings at Normandy. He provides fascinating accounts of the creation and testing of various pierheads, floating steel bridges, and ""Rhino"" ferries. His narrative of Seabee accomplishments is heavily laced with colorful stories of moonshining, brawling, and carousing juxtaposed with compassionate stories of the children in the prisoner of war camps. His enthusiasm for the Seabees gained instant acceptance when this book was first published in 1945 and is often cited as inspiring succeeding generations to rise to the same spirit of devotion and loyalty to their task.

Two parts are in daily-type diary format. The highlight portion, Part 3, represents his experiences on the island of Saipan during the Pacific war. Included there are Frank's tales of mundane Seabee living experiences, but also of murder, rape, suicide, desecration and animal consumption of dead Japanese soldiers, inadequate nutrition, poor medical care, inadequate officers, and other hardships. A near-ship mutiny occurrence is described in Part 4. Included sections added by editor Henry Rauch are an introduction, explanatory footnotes, and a Frank Coughtry biography.

Book excerpt: One of the bloodiest battles of the war in the Pacific. Operation Detachment, the invasion of Iwo Jima, on February 19, 1945, was the first campaign on Japanese soil, and it resulted in some of the fiercest fighting of the Pacific campaign. United States Marines supported by the U.S. Navy and Air Force fought the Japanese both over and underground on the island of volcanic ash, in a battle which was immortalized by the raising of the Stars and Stripes above Mount Suribachi. It was a battle that the Japanese could not win, but they were determined to die trying; of the 18,000-strong garrison, only 200 were taken prisoner. The Americans lost more in the 35-day battle, but at the end they had possession of three airfields in range of the Japanese mainland. This book gives a clear, concise account of those dramatic days in 1945, supported by a timeline of events and orders of battle. Over fifty photographs illustrate the events during this momentous battle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of the Seabees by the famous author William Bradford Huie. This was Huie's first book about the Seabees. He wrote it while in the Navy Seabees. He was an assistant to Vice Admiral Ben Moreell, the "Father" of the Seabees. The Seabees were born of dire need at a time of national peril. The country was stunned by the blow at Pearl Harbor. Most of the men who joined theSeabees could have avoided military service [because of their age] had they chosen to do so, but it is a characteristic of the Seabees that they have a highly developed sense of individual responsibility to “get this thing over with.” Lieutenant Huie is to be complimented on the work which he has performed in setting forth the accomplishments and ideals of the Seabees and the spirit by which they are animated. This spirit can be summarized by quoting from an answer to a questionnaire distributed to a battalion of Seabees by their Chaplain. Among other questions was this one: “What can we do to make you more content?” and the answer was: “Nothing, I got in this outfit to give, not to get.” ––Ben Moreell Vice Admiral, Civil Engineer Corps, U.S. Navy

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On February 19, 1945, seven battalions of U.S. Marines landed on the eastern beaches of Iwo Jima. On the southernmost flank, in the shadows of Suribachi, the First Battalion, 28th Marines, stormed ashore into the bloodiest and most renowned of all battles fought by the U.S. Marine Corps. Thirty-six days later, the Marines overran the “Bloody Gorge” and dislodged the last enemy holdouts. The battle was over, but at great cost: 225 of the First Battalion’s men died on Iwo Jima. Based on official reports and personal accounts, this is a day-by-day history of the First Battalion, 28th Marines, on Iwo Jima. Each chapter presents an overview of that day’s combat and other relevant events, and also contains the text of that day’s official regimental and battalion narratives. The text is complemented by a chronology and transcribed muster rolls for February and March 1945.

Book excerpt: Can Do!, first published in 1944, is a fascinating account of the formation and Second World War activities of the U.S. Navy 'Seabees' (from 'C.B.' - construction battalion). The book covers projects of the Seabees throughout the South Pacific, the Aleutian Islands, and in Italy, as well as numerous personal stories of the men as they faced enemy attacks, for example, while attempting to construct vital island runways. Their skill and competence in critical trades such as construction, engineering, pipe-laying, electricity, and plumbing, and their positive 'Can Do!' attitude in the face of danger and difficult conditions were critical in the Allied effort to win the war and remain an inspiration to younger generations. This unabridged reprint edition includes 70 pages of drawings and photographs of Seabee activities throughout the world.
