Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sea-Girt Yezo: Glimpses of Missionary Work in North Japan This book is written for young people and is intended to give a few peeps at missionary work as carried on in the Hokkaido Jurisdiction - North Japan. While it is largely autobiographical, it also gives many short glimpses of various aspects both of the work of the preacher and teacher and also of the psychological development of the believer. Some of the things related may appear to be almost incredible; nevertheless they are perfectly true. There is much in our Blessed Religion which, before experience, might be taken as incredible. But missionary work means just a practical witnessing for Christ, and therefore, to be logical, we must expect to find wonderful things experienced in it. The day of miracles is mt over, for there are many spiritual miracles wrought at the present day among the Heathen which only those engaged in this work are able to see. These are to be regarded as seals and signs that the Gospel is true. Miracles of conversion are recorded in this book, and it is hoped that every young Reader may be led to regard them as such. That the Master Himself may bless these pages to the Reader is the earnest prayer of the Author. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis The Cross and the Rising Sun by : A. Hamish Ion
Download or read book The Cross and the Rising Sun written by A. Hamish Ion and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2009-09-21 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The influx of Protestant missionaries from Britain to Japan, Korea and Taiwan was an integral part of the British presence in East Asia from 1865 to 1945. Ion draws on both British and Japanese sources to examine the life, work and attitudes of the British missionaries, women and men, who ventured far from their homeland to preach the gospel. He explores the role played by British Protestants as both Christian missionaries and informal ambassadors of their own country and civilization. Through their educational, social and medical work the missionaries helped introduce Western ideas and social pursuits which in turn affected different facets of society and culture in Japan, Korea and Taiwan. The study illustrates how the British missionaries’ intent to introduce Christianity was affected by the response of the East Asians to Western ideas. In describing the high drama of the British missionary movement’s pioneering days in the late nineteenth century to its persecution during the late 1930s, Ion casts light on a particular, yet important, aspect of the changing tides of Anglo-Japanese relations. This book will ably complement his previous study of Canadian missionaries in East Asia during the same period. Book Synopsis Beyond Ainu Studies by : Mark James Hudson
Download or read book Beyond Ainu Studies written by Mark James Hudson and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2013-12-31 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2008, 140 years after it had annexed Ainu lands, the Japanese government shocked observers by finally recognizing Ainu as an Indigenous people. In this moment of unparalleled political change, it was Uzawa Kanako, a young Ainu activist, who signalled the necessity of moving beyond the historical legacy of “Ainu studies.” Mired in a colonial mindset of abject academic practices, Ainu Studies was an umbrella term for an approach that claimed scientific authority vis-à-vis Ainu, who became its research objects. As a result of this legacy, a latent sense of suspicion still hangs over the purposes and intentions of non-Ainu researchers. This major new volume seeks to re-address the role of academic scholarship in Ainu social, cultural, and political affairs. Placing Ainu firmly into current debates over Indigeneity, Beyond Ainu Studies provides a broad yet critical overview of the history and current status of Ainu research. With chapters from scholars as well as Ainu activists and artists, it addresses a range of topics including history, ethnography, linguistics, tourism, legal mobilization, hunter-gatherer studies, the Ainu diaspora, gender, and clothwork. In its ambition to reframe the question of Ainu research in light of political reforms that are transforming Ainu society today, this book will be of interest to scholars and students in Indigenous studies as well as in anthropology and Asian studies.
