Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Robyn Horn’s thirty years as a wood sculptor, her work has evolved from small, lathe-turned objects to ten-foot-high redwood compositions like her Already Set in Motion #1170, which graces a garden at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. In creating these forms that rise from the earth at improbable angles, Horn’s primary tool is the chainsaw, and yet a tenderness for her medium reveals itself in the delicate balance of planes that allows her sculptures to both loom and flow, visually indicating that they are precarious when in fact they are sturdy. The essays and images in The Sculpture of Robyn Horn sketch the industrious career of this Little Rock, Arkansas-based sculptor, illuminating her attention to geometry, physics, and the philosophy of design, and exploring the context and origin of the various series—Geodes, Millstones, Standing Stones, and Slipping Stones, among others—that characterize her body of work.

Book excerpt: Roni Horn's "To Place" is an ongoing series of small editions, each book a unique look at the relationship between identity and location. They take as their starting point Iceland and Horn's evolving experiences there, illustrated in watercolors, photographs, typographic drawings, and text. "Doubt Box" is the ninth book in the set, printed in a limited edition of 1,000 copies, and it comes in the form of a collection of 28 loose two-sided images printed on cards, which makes for 56 color reproductions. One face of each shows the glacial river Skafta, proverbially both changing and constant. The other shows any of a collection of possibilities--a boy, an iceberg, birds. Each card offers a hybrid, a composite, while together they suggest the universality of duality, and particularly the dual nature of identity.

Book excerpt: "This book is the first publication devoted to a previously largely overlooked group of works by the internationally acclaimed artist Rebecca Horn - her rich and diverse graphic oeuvre. The drawings completed by Rebecca Horn since the sixties include preliminary studies for sculptures, works produced in conjunction with her sculptures and installations, and entirely autonomous pieces. Many of these diagrams, scores, technical designs, and evidently spontaneous drawings are enriched with collaged objects, printed words, and lines of poetry."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: Sited in a converted library building on a promontory overlooking the ocean in the town of Stykkishlmur on the west coast of Iceland, VATNASAFN / LIBRARY OF WATER incorporates many of Roni Horn's abiding artistic concerns with water and weather, reflection and illumination, and the fluid nature of identity. Twenty-four glass columns containing water from glaciers around Iceland refract and reflect the day into a rubber floor embedded with words used to describe weather, inside or out. VATNASAFN / LIBRARY OF WATER also offers a space for community gatherings, a studio for writers, and it houses an oral archive of weather reports gathered from people who live in and around Stykkishlmur. This book surveys the interconnecting elements of Roni Horn's long-term project on the island through a series of image sequences and texts. It also includes a selection of writings by the artist inspired by her experience of being in Iceland.

Grenville Gilbert, of Ware, Massachusetts, and generously presented to The Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1937. An essay on American engraved powder horns and a résumé of the Gilbert collection precede the catalogue, which consists of detailed descriptions of the individual pieces and notes of genealogical or historical interest. Each horn in the collection is illustrated by a collotype reproduction and, with one exception (an undecorated horn), by a line drawing of the engraved area. An indexed checklist of the collections records the pertinent details of each powder horn.

Book excerpt: Based on the holdings of the Goetz Collection in Munich, and accompanying a 2013 exhibition there, this volume offers a concise Roni Horn overview. It includes Horn's best-known series, such as You Are the Weather, To Place, a.k.a., Some Thames and Cloud and Clown. Throughout these sequences, Horn's abiding motifs recur: water, weather, her adoptive home of Iceland, and more formal qualities such as repetition and permutation. The book shows how Horn's major works can be experienced in ever-new constellations, arrangements and contrasts within the exhibition context. Also included here is a collection of key writings by Horn--"Making Being Here Enough," "I Can't See the Arctic Circle from Here," "My Oz," "Island Frieze," "When Dickinson Shut Her Eyes" and "Simple and Complete"--plus an interview with the artist conducted by James Lingwood.

Book excerpt: Last season we published Horn's Dictionary of Water, a universal lexicon, now we offer This Is Me, This Is You Horn's handbook of identity. Here in this uniquely bound twinned volume we have a book with no end. Peruse the 48 images taken with a 'point and shoot' camera, and as you arrive at the last image, you turn the book over and begin again: now with a paired complement for each of the 48 images, taken only a few seconds later. This work, a single and singular portrait photographed over a two year period evokes a multitude-- of identities, of images, of icons from Bette Davis to Marlon Brando. Ultimately it is the multitude in each of us.

Book excerpt: Awarded an Asian/Pacific American Award for Literature Picture Book Honor, this stunning picture book brings to life the imagination of Japanese American artist, Isamu Noguchi. (Cover image may vary.) If you are Isamu, stones are the most special of all. How can they be so heavy? Would they float if they had no weight? Winner of the Theordor Seuss Geisel Award in 2020 for Stop! Bot!, James Yang imagines a day in the boyhood of Japanese American artist, Isamu Noguchi. Wandering through an outdoor market, through the forest, and then by the ocean, Isamu sees things through the eyes of a young artist . . .but also in a way that many children will relate. Stones look like birds. And birds look like stones. Through colorful artwork and exquisite text, Yang translates the essence of Noguchi so that we can all begin to see as an artist sees.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No one is more conscious of the faults of this work than the author. Therefore some self -criticism should be woven into this foreward. There are two possible methodologically pure solutions to this book's theme: a de scriptive catalog of the pictures couched in the language of natural science and accom panied by a clinical and psychopathological description of the patients, or a completely metaphysically based investigation of the process of pictorial composition. According to the latter, these unusual works, explained psychologically, and the exceptional circum stances on which they are based would be integrated as a playful variation of human expression into a total picture of the ego under the concept of an inborn creative urge, behind which we would then only have to discover a universal need for expression as an instinctive foundation. In brief, such an investigation would remain in the realm of phenomenologically observed existential forms, completely independent of psychiatry and aesthetics. The compromise between these two pure solutions must necessarily be piecework and must constantly defend itself against the dangers of fragmentation. We are in danger of being satisfied with pure description, the novelistic expansion of details and questions of principle; pitfalls would be very easy to avoid if we had the use of a clearly outlined method. But the problems of a new, or at least never seriously worked, field defy the methodology of every established subject.

Book excerpt: Forces of Nature: Renwick Invitational 2020 features artists Lauren Fensterstock, Timothy Horn, Debora Moore, and Rowland Ricketts. Nature provides a way for these invited artists to ask what it means to be human in a world increasingly chaotic and divorced from our physical landscape. Representing craft media from fiber to mosaic to glass and metals, these artists approach the long history of art's engagement with the natural world through unconventional and highly personal perspectives.Forces of Nature: Renwick Invitational 2020 is the ninth installment of the Renwick Invitational. Established in 2000, this biennial showcase highlights midcareer and emerging makers who are deserving of wider national recognition. The featured artists work in a wide variety of media, from Lauren Fensterstock, who creates detailed, large-scale installations using intensive modes of making drawn from the decorative arts, including paper quilling and mosaic, and from whom SAAM has commissioned a site-specific work--inspired in part by the illustrated renaissance German manuscript The Book of Miracles ---that will transform an entire gallery at the Renwick, to Timothy Horn, who creates exaggerated adornments that combine natural and constructed worlds, taking inspiration from objects as varied as baroque jewellery patterns and Victorian era detailed studies of lichen, coral, and seaweed, from bronze and glass, as well as unusual materials like crystalized rock sugar, to evoke the extravagant Amber Room in the Catherine the Great's palace of Tsarskoye Selo; and from Debora Moore, known for her exquisitely detailed glass renderings of orchids, and who is represented in this volume in her new series, Arboria (2018), in which Moore focuses less on realism and more on capturing an intensely personal experience of beauty and wonder, to Rowland Ricketts who creates immersive installations using handwoven and hand-dyed cloth, starting on his farm, where he cultivates the indigo plants he uses to colour his artwork, fully linking his material and process with the finished product. Participatory engagement from non-artists, forms a major part of Rickett's work, emphasizing the relationship between nature, culture, the passage of time, and everyday life.

Book excerpt: Renowned for her kinetic sculptures, site-specific installations and films, Rebecca Horn has exhibited her work widely across the globe. This fully illustrated catalogue accompanies the first exhibition to demonstrate the pivotal role of drawing in her practice, from early sketches for performances to recent large-scale gestural abstractions. Rebecca Horn focuses on the body - its relationship with nature, its sensory awareness, frailty and desire - tapping into the world of metaphor, legend and alchemy. Bodylandscapes brings together her work across all media, from the start of her career in the late 1960's through to the present day.
