Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a theological student in Finland, Dr. Saarnivaara became interested in the question of Scriptural baptism. Which baptism, he wondered, had the most authority: the one a person received in infancy, or the one received as an adult after a conscious conversion. Should he, as one who had been baptized in infancy, be baptized again, after his conversion, in order to be a Christian in the Biblical sense, or was the baptism he received as a child valid? In seeking an answer, he studied the Bible and the copious literature on both sides of the question. Now, in this book, cast in dialog form, Dr. Saarnivaara offers the result of his study, examining the question exhaustively from both sides. Some of the questions which are thoroughly discussed are: Was infant baptism practiced in the time of Christ and the Apostles? Did Christ want His Church to practice infant baptism, or baptism after conscious conversion? Does the New Testament teach baptism as a means of grace, or as an act of obedience and confession of faith? What does the Bible teach as the relationship between baptism and regeneration? What was the practice and teaching of the post-Apostolic and the Ancient Church? What was the original method of baptism: immersion or pouring (or sprinkling)? In developing his theme, Dr. Saarnivaara has set forth the pros and cons of this age-old and still acute problem with admirable exactitude and lucidity. It is easy for the layperson to comprehend, but it is not superficial reading. From the thousands who regard religious problems like baptism worthy of thoughtful consideration and study, however, Dr. Saarnivaara's book should receive keen attention.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Holy Baptism, Its Mode, Subjects, and Sacramental Nature, Vol. 1 of 3: The Mode of Baptism in the Light of Scripture and History IN very many places what is called a revival of religion centres around the never-ending controversy concerning the mode of Baptism. In one sense this fact might seem to mean that a great importance is properly assigned to Baptism as a Sacrament, as an essential part of the Christian scheme of salvation. But the teaching connected therewith does not justify such an inference. All the importance is given to the way the water is used in the Sacrament, and no Spiritual effect is held to be connected therewith. This great difference seems to be on the side of inconsistency. For, if it does not really practically matter Whether a so-called believer is baptized or not, it cannot be of any consequence in what way the washing of water takes place. If there be no effect as regards spiritual life to be looked for from Baptism rightly and properly performed, it seems but vanity and vexation of spirit to make so much of what is called its valid performance. But since there are so many persistent and reiterated assertions made that the validity of Baptism depends upon one mode -that which is called improperly immersion, - and not being convinced that such dogmatic statements are supported so certainly by Scripture and History, I beg to offer you such reasons and arguments as may, perhaps, help you to come to a more reasonable conviction of the whole truth. And here I wish to remind you and myself, that assertion is not argument. No amount of zeal nor lung power, will appeal to the intelligence of a reasonable and reasoning mind while under certain conditions either, and certainly both, will sometimes have a convincing effect upon certain temperaments. As for zeal, we know that zeal is oftentimes found with error as well as with truth. There is such a thing possible as having a zeal of God, but not according t-o knowledge. (rom. X., St Paul had a zeal when he persecuted the Church, as much as he had afterwards when he preached the faith which once he destroyed. (gal. I., He thus describes himself in his Epistle to the Philippians (iii., 6) concerning zeal, persecuting the church. With regard to the force or power of utterance, this, too, can add nothing either to truth or to error. We are here put in mind of the worshippers of the great Goddess Diana. Book excerpt: This book demonstrates that believer's baptism did not simply disappear after the apostolic era, but continued to be the accepted practice for centuries. Infant baptism became part of ecclesiastical practice gradually, apart from apostolic injunction. For this reason it must be called into question and rejected as a suitable practice for Christian churches.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scripture Mode of Baptism, Vol. 1 of 2: Ascertained to Be Sprinkling IT is natural to expect some apology for engaging in the discussion of the subject of baptism at the present time, when there is so much said 'and written upon that perplexing controversy. Mine is, I have long felt the need of a work on baptism, suited to the wants of common readers, who compose the mass of community, as well as a large majority of church members. So far as I am acquainted, most of the works extant are, in my Opinion, either too long or too learned to suit that respectable class of readers or they are too short to afford the infor mation necessary upon that difficult subject. Rendered difficult by so much discussion of a character better calcu lated to darken the subject, and to divide the Body of Christ, than to elucidate the subject thus obviously ren dered perplexing. __besides, a standard work on baptism is still a desideratum in our branch of the Christian Church. Moreover, the present advanced state of biblical literature imperiously demands such a work. Truth is evidently in a state of continual development. It is a fact well known to Bible students generally, that a great many texts of scripture, which were formerly understood to refer to material or water baptism, evidently refer to spiritual baptism or the work of the Holy Spirit. On the heart of the believer and are still retained in some of the most popular works on baptism, and in some of the best notes and comments on the sacred pages; also in more than half the references in' our Confession of Faith. Furthermore, the great diversity of views entertained by the members of C hrist's visible church respecting an ordinance of the New Testament, is a subject of deep regret, and calls loudly upon all parties to contribute their respective mites, in the way Of Christian forbear ance and compromise, to bring about that state of recon ciliation and fraternal feeling, so desirable in this present age of advancement. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Baptism, Vol. 1: The Mode of Baptism Now, if the immersion here mentioned, was the actual Baptism, in the face of the whole Church and we know that Baptism was performed before the congregation - then all must admit that the progress of corruption had been fearfully rapid, and the sac rament of purity was perverted into an orgie of im modesty and shamelessness, only paralleled by some of the heathen abominations.
