Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Industries of Scotland: Their Rise, Progress, and Present Condition I trust that this book may be of some little service in imparting such information, so far as Scotland is concerned, and that others may do for England and Ireland what I have attempted to do for Scotland. It is proper to mention that the substance of the following pages originally appeared in a series of articles printed during last year in the weekly issue of the Scotsman newspaper. The articles were most favourably received as fair and accurate accounts of the branches of trade to which they related, audit is in accordance with a generally expressed desire that they are now reprinted in a more permanent form. The text has been subjected to careful revision; numerous additions have been made; and where it was considere essential, the latest statistics have been given. This book was released on 2011-02-07 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Committee urges the Government to make the future of the sector a priority in the face of emerging barriers for growth. This is a golden age of opportunity the Committee says for the industry and proper support for small companies accessing global audiences is vital, it is potentially a world leader for the UK. It warns that overseas government subsidies, cheaper labour markets and skills shortages have created an uneven international playing field and more encouragement for development and growth is needed. The possibility of a games industry tax relief should be kept under review and a comprehensive assessment of the benefits of a games tax relief should be carried out, along with an examination of countries whose industries flourish without such support. A shortage of adequately qualified graduates to sustain the industry is also a real concern, skills like maths and computer science being needed and the brain drain of graduates to countries offering better incentives. The creation and retention of intellectual property is seen as a priority issue for the UK video games industry and the Government's review of intellectual property taxation will be monitored. The failure of the creative industries Minister to lobby the Treasury directly on games tax relief is both surprising and disappointing and the Committee asks the Government to explain how the industry's voice will be heard properly in future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since Devolution in 1999 Scotland has become a focus of intense interest both within Britain and throughout the wider world. In this Very Short Introduction, Rab Houston explores how an independent Scottish nation emerged in the Middle Ages, how it was irrevocably altered by Reformation, links with England and economic change, and how Scotland influenced the development of the modern world. Examining politics, law, society, religion, education, migration, and culture, he examines how the nation's history has made it distinct from England, both before and after Union, how it overcame internal tensions between Highland and Lowland society, and how it has today arrived at a political, social and culture watershed. Authoritative, lucid, and ranging widely over issues of environment, people, and identity, this is Scotland's story without myths: an ideal introduction for those interested in the Scots, but also a balanced yet refreshing challenge to those who already feel at home in Scotland past and present. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

Book excerpt: Scotland has long had a romantic appeal which has tended to be focused on a few over-dramatized personalities or events, notably Mary Queen of Scots, Bonnie Prince Charlie, the Highland Clearances - the failures and the sad - though more positively, William Wallace and Robert the Bruce have also got in on the act, because of their heroism in resisting English aggression. This has had its satisfaction, and has certainly been very good for the tourist industry. But, fuelled by the explosion of serious academic studies in the last half-century, there has grown up a keen desire for a better-informed and more satisfying understanding of the Scottish past - and not only in Scotland. The vague use of 'Britain' in books and television series which are in fact about England has begun to provoke adverse comment; there is clearly a growing desire for knowledge about the history of the non-English parts of the British Isles and Eire, already well established in Ireland and becoming increasingly obvious in Scotland and Wales. This book brings together a series of studies by well-established scholars of Scottish history, from Roman times until the present day, and makes the fruits of their research accessible to students and the general reader alike. It offers the opportunity to go beyond the old myths, legends, and romance to the much more rewarding knowledge of why Scotland was a remarkably successful, thriving, and important kingdom, of international renown.

Book excerpt: In autumn 2014 those living in Scotland will face the most important political decision of a lifetime. Whether Scotland becomes an independent state once again, as it was before 1707, or remains within the United Kingdom will have profound consequences for everyone in Britain. There are many issues involved in this important choice, but a key part of the debate centres around the question of whether Scotland would prosper more or less after independence. How well off are we? Would we have a faster or slower growing economy if we were independent? What currency would we use - the pound, the euro or a new currency of our own? What should our energy policy be? There are those who would like to see a more egalitarian society, like Scandinavia, with a reduction in poverty and deprivation; would we be likely to achieve that? Would we continue to be in the European Union but with Scotland becoming a member in its own right? Is that right for Scotland and what problems might that involve? In this impartial, clearly expressed and thought-provoking book, economist Gavin McCrone addresses these, and many other, questions which are of vital importance in the run up to the referendum.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The economic and social problems of modern Scotland are at the centre of current debate about regional economic growth, social improvement and environmental rehabilitation. In this book, as relevant today as when it was first published in 1975, Anthony Slaven argues that the extent and causes of these problems are frequently underestimated, thus making development policies less than fully effective. The major economic and social weaknesses of the west of Scotland are shown to be rooted in the regions former strengths. The author demonstrates how, although the region and its people have resisted change, a thriving and self reliant nineteenth-century economy , based on local resources and manpower, has given way in the present century to vanishing skills and products, unemployment and social deprivation. Since 1945 economic and social planning has helped to improve the situation, although many difficulties remain. Seen in the historical perspective provided by this revealing study, the present industrial problems of the west of Scotland, and their remedies, become clearer. Mr Slaven argues that the older industries deserve more help, for without this, he believes, the ineffectiveness of development policies is likely to be perpetuated. This book was first published in 1975.
