Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scotland From the Treaty of Union With England to the Present Time, (1707-1907) The ordinary text-book of Scottish history invariably ends with the Treaty of Union in 1707 and text-books of English or British history rarely contain any reference to Scottish affairs after that event, except perhaps a brief account of the Jacobite risings of 1715 and 1745. Scotland, however, did not break away from her own past at the union, but continued her national history, not only as an integral part of the British Empire, but as a separate kingdom. It is indeed with the union that the proudest and most instructive period of Scottish history begins, for it was then that Scotland began to assert her real influence as a nation on the affairs of the empire and of the world. That influence has been so great and so beneficial in all departments of human activity that the story of the development and progress of the social, industrial, and political life of Scotland since the union forms one of the most interesting and instructive chapters of modern history, yet it is a chapter which is generally but little known even in Scotland. The reason for this is no doubt to a large extent the practical absence from our school histories of all reference to Scotland during this period. Book excerpt: This collection brings together a series of papers that in May 2007 were presented at a Royal Society of Edinburgh conference organised to mark the 300th anniversary of the Union of 1707. One of the guiding objectives of the RSE event was to showcase the work of younger historians, and to present new work that would provide fresh insights on this defining moment in Scotland's (and the United Kingdom's) history. The seven chapters range widely, in content and coverage, from a detailed study of how the Church of Scotland viewed union and how concerns about the Kirk influenced the voting behaviour in the Scottish Parliament, through to the often overlooked broader European context in which the British parliamentary union - only one form of new state formation in the early modern period - was forged. The global War of the Spanish Succession, it is cogently argued, influenced both the timing and shape of the British union. Also examined are elite thinking and public opinion on fundamental questions such as Scottish nationhood and the place and powers of monarchs, as well as burning issues of the time such as the Company of Scotland, and trade. Other topics include an investigation of the particular intellectual characteristics of the Scots, a product of the pre-Union educational system, which it is argued enabled professionals and entrepreneurs in Scotland to meet the challenges posed by the 1707 settlement. As one of the contributors argues, union offered the Scots only partial openings within the empire.

Book excerpt: "The story of modern Britain began 300 years ago, with the Treaty of Union between England and Scotland in 1707. In this fresh and challenging look at the origins of the United Kingdom, the first full study for four decades, Michael Fry focuses on the years which led up to the Union, setting the political history of both countries against the backdrop of war in Europe and the emergence of imperialism. In comparing the fate of Scotland with that of other small nations he reconstructs the human as well as the political story - in the voices of the people, in plots and conspiracies, in reports from battlefields and in the impassioned debates of the Scots Parliament." "In doing so he rejects the long-held assumption that the economy was of overwhelming importance in the Scots' acceptance of the terms of the Treaty, showing how they were in fact able to exploit English ignorance of and indifference to Scotland - as evident now as then - to steer the settlement in their own favour. Thus the future of Scotland, England and Britain remained open, not closed. The implications of this, Fry argues, have influenced the dynamics of the Union ever since, and are only being fully worked out in our own time."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: This is a book of collected first-hand source material exploring Scotland's place within its union with England. The idea was to try to find those who were in favour of the union but felt they had a duty to make it a more equal union by solving varying grievances the population had from the time of its signing. There are many misconceptions these days with regards the Treaty of Union Scotland entered into with England in 1707. There's a pervading belief of Scotland, the country, ceasing to exist in place of the country of Great Britain. There are also those who believe our monarch is only such due to this treaty. In both of these examples the falsehood becomes more evident when you exchange Scotland with England and claim the same. The easiest go-to for the information was the British press for articles, op-eds and correspondence. And, jings, did they deliver! From issues of political apathy in the first half-century post-union, calls for a home militia, to comparisons with Ireland after their entering the union in 1801. Over-taxation, under-funding, and centralisation are recurring issues creating a pervasive feeling of unfairness in how each country was individually treated within the unions. For the most part, every believer in the union, had a grievance of some kind; whether it was in Scotland's under-representation in Westminster, the paying of England's debts, or attempts at Centralisation both by the dissolution of our national institutions, supposedly protected by the treaty, and the insistence Britain/British could be just as easily replaced with England/English. There was one main article in particular that seemed to grab people's attention, however, which I titled the 'Financial Cost to Scotland of the Union.' It's written by Harry Gow and lays out the figures in black and white leading us to believe nothing much has changed since it was written in 1891. The vast majority of this compilation of articles is penned by authors in favour of the British union, from varying newspapers across mainland Britain and Ireland, in case anyone was wondering about bias on this subject.
