Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scoring Judging Contests Terms Defined The term Judging Contests, as accepted in this writ ing, means those occasions upon which a number of people express individual opinions as to the merits of a class of specimens with the idea that their opinions are to be compared with the decision of a recognized authority on that class of specimens. The people may be men or women or boys and girls assembled on occasions such as county and state fairs or state and national conventions of high school, college or lay groups. The specimens to be judged usually consist of classes of livestock, dairy cattle, poultry or crops products but the same procedure could be applied wherever there is opportunity for judgment as to the merits of specimens to' be compared. Specimens in the class should all be of the same kind so as to permit of logical comparison. For example, specimens of corn, potatoes, or apples should be of the same variety; animals should be of the same breed, sex, age and general condition. Specimens should be enough alike to make judgment difficult for contestants yet they should vary enough to preclude a difference of opinion by competent judges as to how they should rank. The most desirable group of specimens to constitute a judging problem is one which grades down perceptibly from the best to the poorest specimen. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Score Cards for Judging Clothing Selection and Construction From an educational standpoint the exact percentage allotted each item on such cards is not vital. The-fact that attention has been focused upon these points is of far greater importance. However, when the article has been entered in a contest and competition is keen, these values assume prominence, especially in the minds of young people who are striving for honors. In such situations unfair advantages are often introduced and much dissatisfaction caused by the use of different scores in different parts of the country and by different leaders. This is especially true in country - wide elimination contests. The only fair method is to establish as nearly uniform score cards as possible. In any case, these should be published before the contest, in order that the contestants may know the standards by which their work is to be judged. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Market Milk Investigations The present bulletin treats of an experiment in scoring or judging the value of market milk and cream as conducted by Mr. C. B. Lane, Assistant Chief of the Dairy Division, at the National Dairy Show, Chicago, in February, 1906. An attempt was made to determine ways and means of giving a fair and accurate score in this class of dairy products. Butter, cheese, and other products have been for years judged as to their quality in contests and on the market, a numerical score bemg given to indicate their value. This bulletin treats of the methods used in the Chicago test, with lessons learned from the course of the work. Much credit should be given to the officers of the National Dairy Show Association and to the Chicago Board of Health for the interest shown and the assistance rendered in making the test a success.
