The reviewed evidence included study designs such as uncontrolled pilot studies, case studies, small-scale cross-sectional surveys, nationally representative longitudinal cohort studies, community-wide ethnographies and randomized controlled trials from diverse disciplines. The beneficial impact of the arts could be furthered through acknowledging and acting on the growing evidence base; promoting arts engagement at the individual, local and national levels; and supporting cross-sectoral collaboration.

This case study draws on a recent piece of research (Yuan & Wu, 2021) that borrows this methodological framework to analyze and evaluate Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) offered by Chinese universities with the goal of exploring how design thinking is taught in non-western contexts. The decision of analyzing MOOCs was made in response to the challenges posed by both the pandemic situation and the difficulty of gaining permission to conduct research on in-person teaching. I will share the advantages and challenges of observing MOOCs and elaborate on how the five-stage scoping studies framework allowed me to apply a structured process to analyze available resources by narrowing down the scope of my inquiry step by step. The approach can serve as a methodological guide when it comes to educational research that focuses or touches upon online teaching and learning resources as well as other studies that touch upon newly emerged topics with little prior research.
