Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scope and Specificity is an investigation of quantifier scope interaction in natural language, with special reference to English and Chinese. In particular, it is concerned with semantic properties of NPs. Quantifier scope plays an important role in current theories of syntax and semantics. However, most studies of quantifier scope are only concerned with the behavior of a small number of quantifiers, e.g. 'every', 'some', 'all'. As a result, the generalizations made on the basis of these quantifiers often do not hold when a wider range of quantifiers is considered. In this study a wide variety of NP types are examined with respect to how they interact with other NPs. The key concept explored is that of semantic scope dependency/independence. NPs are considered according to two properties: whether they can induce scope-dependency and whether they can be scope-dependent. By observing how in basic sentences NPs behave with respect to the two properties, the author presents a picture of quantifier scope much different from what has been assumed in the literature.

In economics, "economies" is synonymous with cost savings and "scope" is synonymous with broadening production/services through diversified products. Economies of scope is an economic theory stating that average total cost of production decrease as a result of increasing the number of different goods produced. For example, a gas station that sells gasoline can sell soda, milk, baked goods, etc. through their customer service representatives and thus gasoline companies achieve economies of scope. How you will benefit (I) Insights, and validations about the following topics: Chapter 1: Economies of scope Chapter 2: Economies of scale Chapter 3: Monopoly Chapter 4: Natural monopoly Chapter 5: Oligopoly Chapter 6: Perfect competition Chapter 7: Opportunity cost Chapter 8: Profit maximization Chapter 9: Break-even (economics) Chapter 10: Experience curve effects Chapter 11: Marginal cost Chapter 12: Average cost Chapter 13: Diminishing returns Chapter 14: Returns to scale Chapter 15: Marginal revenue Chapter 16: Bertrand competition Chapter 17: Cost curve Chapter 18: Supply (economics) Chapter 19: Minimum efficient scale Chapter 20: Marginal product of labor Chapter 21: Socially optimal firm size (II) Answering the public top questions about economies of scope. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The night operations program is concerned with problems in optimizing human performance in relation to night vision devices and related sensors. To further this research, experimentation has been directed toward enhancement of the performance of the combat soldier in night operations. The report describes an experimental evaluation or four passive night vision devices, and presents results of the assessment of operator performance with these devices in target detection and search tasks. Subjects were required to detect targets (soldiers or aggressor type silhouettes) presented in two modes. Responses were recorded electronically. Data obtained were analyzed to determine performance effectiveness with the two subject devices and the effects were studied of illumination (starlight, half moon, full moon), distance (50 - 300 meters), target mode (moving vs stationary), target exposure time (10, 20, 30 and 90 seconds), and their interactions on search performance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Case, Scope, and Binding investigates the relation between syntax and semantics within a framework which combines the syntactic Government-Binding theory with a novel cross-linguistic theory of case and semantics. It is argued that case assignment, agreement, syntactic binding relations, as well as the minimum scopes of operators, are all determined by the relations which hold at the level of s-structure. Cross-linguistic variation with respect to these phenomena is due to corresponding variations at the s-structure level. The minimum scope of an operator cannot exceed its c-command domain at s-structure, but may be reduced by certain semantic mechanisms. The availability of any wider scope option depends on the possibility of movement at LF. The proposed theory is tested in detail against the facts of Inuit (Eskimo-Aleut family), an ergative language with typologically unusual scope and binding relations. For linguists and philosophers interested in syntax, semantics, or the syntax-semantics interface.

Book excerpt: The arrival of the welfare state in Western Europe brought with it a vast expansion in the role of government. That expansion led to fears that the increased expectations of citizens would lead to government overload and `ungovernability'. This book sheds new and surprisingly light on the whole idea of a crisis of ungovernability. It begins by examining the expanding scope of government in the post-War period. Drawing on a vast data set stretching back over the last two decades and right across Europe, the book reveals public attitudes towards the range and extent of government activity. Changes in the public's political agenda are identified, along with attitudes towards the size of government, taxation, and the equality and security goals of the welfare state. Attitudes towards government intervention in the economy, the environment, and the media are also examined. The final chapters assess the significance for governments of beliefs about the scope of government. Series description This set of five volumes is an exhaustive study of beliefs in government in post-war Europe. Based upon an extensive collection of survey evidence, the results challenge widely argued theories of mass opinion, and much scholarly writing about citizen attitudes towards government and politics. The series arises from a research project sponsored by the European Science Foundation. Reviews of the series: `The quality of the empirical analysis is consistently high...[an] important collection of empirical studies addressing the debate about the "crisis of representation" in Europe.' Journal of Public Policy `These volumes contain the work of many of the most important scholars in the field of public opinion in Europe today...These five volumes represent a major contribution to comparative politics, especially the study of mass politics. The chapters provide a wealth of information about public opinion in contemporary Europe and the relationship between state and society...The volumes clearly will be read by all students of European politics...' Times Educational Supplement `The Beliefs in Government series is a monumental achievement. It tells us at least everything we want to know about the structure of European public opinion'. Nurses will learn what they need to do to keep their patients safe and stay within the legal limits of a nursing license as well as their employer’s policies. Just as important, nurses will learn how to take on new roles and expand their scope of practice safely and responsibly. Europe is a vast region with a diversity of laws, economies, healthcare practices, and languages. Nurses need to understand what is consistent across the region, and what is different in their country. In any European country, nursing leaders, government regulators, and scholars will better understand how the nursing scope of practice defines the profession and how it can be used to promote nursing professionalism. The region’s top nurse experts came together to explain their respective countries and the major trends that affect everyone. They show the reader what is the consensus on nursing regulations, where there is conflict and differences, and where are the opportunities for change and growth. Douglas Long brings a wealth of nursing experience in emergency departments and acute care. He is the author of Nursing Scope of Practice (2021), Nursing: Moving Forward (2020), and Ámbito de la práctica profesional de enfermería en América Latina (2023).

Book excerpt: Agricultural mechanization has often been characterized by scale-effects and increased specialization. Such characterizations, however, fail to explain how mechanization may grow in Africa where production environments are more heterogeneous and diversification of production may help in mitigating risks from increasingly uncertain climatic conditions. Using panel data from farm households and crop-specific production costs in Nigeria, we estimate how the adoption of animal traction or tractors affects the economies of scope (EOS) between rice, non-rice grains, legume/seed crops, and other crops, which are the crop groups that are most widely grown with animal traction or tractors in Nigeria. The results indicate that the adoption of these mechanization technologies is associated with lower EOS between non-rice grains, legume/seed crops, and other crops, but greater EOS between rice and other crops. An increase in EOS for rice is indicated in both primal and dual analytical approaches. Mechanical technologies may raise EOS between crops that are grown in more heterogeneous environments, even though it may lower EOS between crops that are grown in relatively similar environments. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first paper that shows the effects of mechanical technologies on EOS in agriculture in developing countries.
