Download or read book Scientific Ballooning written by Nobuyuki Yajima and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-04-21 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to introduce scientific ballooning to the many people who are interested in the use of balloons for scientific applications. The book offers a basic understanding of the engineering details and the scientific research giving rise to balloon activities going on today. Above all, the book will serve as a guidebook for young scientists and researchers seeking to become involved in space science and technology by participating in balloon projects. The book deals with three types of balloons: large stratospheric balloons used for scientific purposes, rubber balloons used for aerological observations, and planetary balloons to be used in the atmospheres of other planets. The book provides many figures and photographs, and offers a systematic description of balloon technologies and related matters from historical background to current research topics. The contents include a theoretical discussion of ballon shape design, analysis and synthesis of flight dynamics, actual launching procedure, flight operations, and typical applications of ballooning in various scientific fields. Detailed meteorological descriptions, especially of the Earth's stratosphere and the atmosphere of other planets, are provided for investigating actual flight behavior.

Book Synopsis A Plan for Long Duration Scientific Ballooning by : Long Duration Balloon Flight Study Committee
Download or read book A Plan for Long Duration Scientific Ballooning written by Long Duration Balloon Flight Study Committee and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is well known that past balloon observations have made significant discoveries and important contributions to gamma-ray and x-ray astronomy, cosmic ray physics, and atmospheric sciences. These and current problems at the forefronts of each of the disciplines are discussed in Section IV. To determine the present scientific requirements for long duration balloon flights, the Lond Duration Balloon Flight Study Committee sent a detailed questionnaire (Appendix A) to all groups using the NSBF recently. The response from scientists, given in Section IV, was most enthusiastic that long duration balloon flights would enable them to make definitive observations not possible in other ways. The Committee examined alternative long duration balloon systems and established detailed requirements for support systems (Section V and VI). It generated a plan with schedule and budget for developing the long duration balloon capacity and suggested a schedule for scientific long duration flight operations in Section VII.

Download or read book Stratospheric Balloons written by Manfred “Dutch” von Ehrenfried and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-03-04 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stratospheric balloons are powerful tools used to study the Earth and its atmosphere, as well as the greater cosmos beyond. This book describes the science and technology behind modern stratospheric ballooning, along with the surprising ways it has impacted our daily lives. The book takes you through every step of the process, starting with an in-depth introduction to basic balloon types and their uses before delving into balloon construction and mission planning. Along the way, you will learn about the novel technologies that have radically changed these balloons and their ability to launch, control and navigate them over specific ground targets. Next follows an exploration of their incredible applications, including research in atmospheric science, cosmology and astronomy, earth studies, meteorology, and aerobiology, and also commercial capabilities such as Internet networks and high-altitude tourism. The community of scientists, engineers, and entrepreneurs involved in stratospheric ballooning is only ever growing. This book shows you how these national and international efforts have truly soared in recent years, and it will be an enjoyable read for anybody interested in learning more about how science and commerce are conducted in the stratosphere, at the edge of space.
