Book excerpt: Excerpt from Education as a Science IN the present work I have surveyed the Teaching Art, as far as possible, from a scientific point of view; which means, among other things, that the maxims of ordinary experience are tested and amended by bringing them under the best ascertained laws of the mind. I have devoted one long chapter to an account of the Intellect and the Emotions in their bearings on education. The remainder of the work is occupied with the several topics more specially connected with the subject. There are certain terms and phrases that play a lead ing part in the various discussions and to each of these I have endeavoured at the outset to assign a precise meaning. They are - Memory, Judgment, Imagination, proceeding from the Known to the Unknown, Analysis and Synthesis, Object Lesson, Information and Train ing, doing One Thing Well. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contributions to the Science of Education I am in nowise disposed to break with the past and to dream of an approaching revolution in educational theory and practice. A better future for the schools is doubt less foreordained, but this is to be a growth, slow and halting, like all higher forms Of growth, and a growth out of past conditions and products. The institutions of a people, to be serviceable and helpful, cannot be far in advance of their actual condition; and if the dream of the educational utopist could be realized in form, it would be inoperative with men and things as they are. It is well that our previsions are only relative. We need to aspire in order that we may grow; but the roots Of all true growth in civilization reach far back into the soil of the past. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on the Science and Art of Education I have for some years dictated my instructions on the science and art of teaching, in the form of notes, suggestions, and hints, to the junior class of this school; but a desire has been expressed by students and others to have the work in a more convenient shape for preservation and use, and to enable the many teachers who do not have the advantages of normal instruction to avail themselves of its helps. In compliance with this desire I have prepared the notes for publication: They do not, however, constitute a methodical or a complete treatise upon pedagogics, but only thoughts and suggestions for prospective teachers and for beginners in school-room work. Every subject has been treated with as much fullness, as well as brevity, as my experience has shown necessary. To subjects in which beginners need most help I have given more space than to others; this accounts for the disproportion in the number of pages devoted to different subjects. The matter will be found in harmony with the best in education and teaching, and presented, it is hoped, with a sufficiency of explanation to make it intelligible to beginners. Repetitions occur here and there, wherever it is believed they will be serviceable to those for whom the book is intended. The addresses were, for the most part, de livered to teachers of physics and chemistry. Why then should not the title be The Teaching of Phys ical Science? Although the illustrations were of necessity chosen mostly from physical science, the addresses were a constant appeal to all science teachers to teach science rather than special sciences. The addresses are arranged in chronological rather than logical order. Although the same theme is often repeated, the treatment is progressive as befits the history of the growth of certain ideas among teachers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Science and Art of Education Joseph payne's writings possess a high value on account of the scientific form which his statements pertaining to education take on. The crystallizing process seems to have set in; truths no longer stand separate, but tend to organize. During the latter part of this century the question - Has Edu cation a scientific foundation? Began to be asked, doubtfully by most. The Art of Teaching had been learned by imitation; the teacher sought no principles, because he never heard they existed. But great men from time to time became teachers. Rabelais, Montaigne, Locke, the Jesuits Rosseau, Pestalozzi, Froebel, and many others, rolled up a rich mass of teaching-facts, and partially arranged them in order. It needed next a philosophic mind to deal with these discoveries, to state their value and explain them. Joseph Payne seemed raised up for this purpose; his cast of mind, education and experience, fitted him to investigate this field of thought. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Science in the Elementary School The part that science plays in modern life is so vital that science teaching must inevitably have an important place in the school curriculum. There has been some confusion regarding the term to be used to cover the work in science in the elementary school Nature-study' has been the word in most common usage. But there is considerable misunderstanding as to what is included under this term. In recent years it has been used in an ever-broadening sense till now the word is used by many educators to include all phases of science adapted to the elementary school. But among people in general the common notion still prevails that nature-study includes only the study of Wild plants and animals. So that, considering all sides of the matter, it has seemed better to the author to adopt the word science instead of nature-study, as tending to involve less mis understanding and as helping to establish an appropriate and standard term. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Textbook in the Principles of Science Teaching There are several ways in which the book may be used in the instruction of prospective science teachers. First, it may be used as a text for a broad general course in the fundamental principles of science teaching, intended for all those who are preparing for the teaching of any of the special sciences. In this case the chapters of general interest should receive the most study and attention; and those de voted to the special sciences, Chapters XII to XXIII, should be touched more lightly, being used for the most part as bases for special reports to the class by those most interested in the particular sciences of which these chapters treat. Second, the book may be used as a text in a special course on the teaching of any one of the sciences. In this case the greater part of the book would be passed over rapidly to de ve10p the general attitude and point of view; and the chapters on Biology or on Geography, Physics, Chemistry, or General Science would be studied intensively and supplemented by copious readings and reports based on references chosen from the book lists appended to the chapters so studied. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Science and Art of Teaching: Or, the Principles and Practice of Education Our design in preparing the following work was to furnish Student-Teachers, and others engaged in education, with a Manual containing a comprehensive resume, within a moderate compass, of all the more important principles and details of their Profession. In the execution of this task we have endeavoured to combine brevity with clearness, so that our mode of expression might be as simple and direct as was consistent with the nature of the subject. Several of the succeeding chapters have appeared from time to time in the English and Irish Educational Papers, some in the American Educational Monthly, and some in the Ontario Journal of Education. Those published in the old country, having secured the kind commendations of the London press, were reproduced in the Journal of Education for the Province of Victoria (Australia) and received with much favour by our fellow-labourers in the antipodes. These chapters (with others which appear in print for the first time) are now presented in book form, with the hope that they may to some extent fill a place, hitherto void, in our native educational literature, and thereby help to promote the interests of the young by reflecting mental light and youthful happiness into some of the darker and less attractive shades of the school-room. In years to come we hope to see the prejudices and moral weaknesses of present educational systems supplanted by the reign of light, love, and intelligence; so that children, at home and abroad, may be emancipated from the thraldom of fear, and educated according to the teachings of Nature and the laws of their being.
