Book excerpt: Excerpt from Science, Environment, and Technology Summit: A Long Term National Science Strategy: Hearing Before the Subcommittee on Basic Research of the Committee on Science, House of Representatives, One Hundred Fourth Congress, First Session; June 1, 1995; No. 17 So, right now, congratulations, Zach, because this is the perfect time for this hearing, to consider ways that our nation can best prioritize and support our worthy and our promising science and technology programs that are so critical to our nation's future well being. As a member of this Committee for twenty years, I believe that I can make the following observation: I know full well that long term planning is essential to success. In fact, our starts and our stops have resulted in wasted tax dollars and lack of scientific progress. And all too often, the lack of continuity or lack of antici pated progress and long lead time in research and development, la dies and gentlemen, has been political and not scientific. Unfortunately, all too often, there has been ambivalence and a lack of commitment by the Congress and Executive Branch to fund the worthy programs at a level that projected the necessary progress or anticipated performance. The list of these cutbacks and cancellations are lengthy, but I'm sure that most people in this room know them by heart. But even with the cutbacks, we can lead and we will succeed. This book was released on 2008-12-03 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a growing sense of national urgency about the role of energy in long-term U.S. economic vitality, national security, and climate change. This urgency is the consequence of many factors, including the rising global demand for energy; the need for long-term security of energy supplies, especially oil; growing global concerns about carbon dioxide emissions; and many other factors affected to a great degree by government policies both here and abroad. On March 13, 2008, the National Academies brought together many of the most knowledgeable and influential people working on energy issues today to discuss how we can meet the need for energy without irreparably damaging Earth's environment or compromising U.S. economic and national security-a complex problem that will require technological and social changes that have few parallels in human history. The National Academies Summit on America's Energy Future: Summary of a Meeting chronicles that 2-day summit and serves as a current and far-reaching foundation for examining energy policy. The summit is part of the ongoing project 'America's Energy Future: Technology Opportunities, Risks, and Tradeoffs,' which will produce a series of reports providing authoritative estimates and analysis of the current and future supply of and demand for energy; new and existing technologies to meet those demands; their associated impacts; and their projected costs. The National Academies Summit on America's Energy Future: Summary of a Meeting is an essential base for anyone with an interest in strategic, tactical, and policy issues. Federal and state policy makers will find this book invaluable, as will industry leaders, investors, and others willing to convert concern into action to solve the energy problem.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On February 20, 1963, a team of nineteen Americans embarked on the first expedition that would combine high-altitude climbing with scientific research. The primary objective of the six scientists on the team—who procured funding by appealing to the military and political applications of their work—was to study how severe stress at high altitudes affected human behavior. The expedition would land the first American on the summit of Mount Everest nearly three years after a successful (though widely disputed) Chinese ascent. At the height of the Cold War, this struggle for the Himalaya turned Everest into both a contested political space and a remote, unpredictable laboratory. The US expedition promised to resurrect American heroism, embodied in a show of physical strength and skill that, when combined with scientific expertise, would dominate international rivals on the frontiers of territorial exploration. It propelled mountaineers, scientists, and their test subjects 29,029 feet above sea level, the highest point of Chinese-occupied Tibet. There they faced hostile conditions that challenged and ultimately compromised standard research protocols, yielding results that were too exceptional to be generalized to other environments. With this book, Philip W. Clements offers a nuanced exploration of the impact of extremity on the production of scientific knowledge and the role of masculinity and nationalism in scientific inquiry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses life and society from a biological perspective. One’s birth occurs out of randomness in nature and human society. Desires propel life movements and conform to the law of nature and society. It is a human nature to compete for survival, and everyone wants to be the strongest. The highest realm of competition is being on top, as explained in the first three chapters. Reaching the summit requires science, especially a correct understanding of science. This book has elucidated the nature of science and the basic attributes of science based on scientific events and the spirit of science. Science is the motion law of matters which depends on the environment. The scientific essence provides a basis for defining "knowledge", "truth" and "the standard of truth", indicates directions for understanding societies correctly and constructing social institutions, and establishes a standard for right and wrong, as discussed in chapter 4. Studies of science provide a basic way of knowing the world and human societies, and that complying to the scientific properties, innovating research methods, and conducting well the examination methods are essentials to successful scientific studies, as discussed in chapter 5. Achieving the summit requires a combination of abilities and opportunities, neither can it be importuned or passively waited, according to chapter 6.

Book excerpt: Gripping and sumptuous, this is the definitive book on the history, mystique, and science of Mount Everest, including how climate change is impacting the world's tallest mountain. In 1963, the American Mount Everest Expedition made mountaineering history. It was the first American venture to successfully scale the legendary peak and the first successful climb up the hazardous West Ridge (a climb so difficult no one has yet repeated it). In 2012, adventurer Conrad Anker led a National Geographic/The North Face team up the mountain to enact a legacy climb. Environmental changes and overcrowding led to challenges and disappointments, but yet the mountain maintains its allure. Now, steely-eyed Anker leads a team of writers in a book designed to celebrate the world's most famous mountain, to look back over the years of climbing triumphs and tragedies, and to spotlight what has changed--and what remains eternal--on Mount Everest. Telltale signs of Everest's current state, never-before-published photography, and cutting-edge science expose the world's tallest peak--its ancient meaning, its ever-present challenges, and its future in a world of disappearing ice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about evolution. It aims to satisfy the curiosity of those who read it without involving them in matters too difficult to understand. Some think that Darwin, the discoverer of the phenomenon, published his theory and it has enjoyed total acceptance ever since. The truth is that science has unearthed in DNA a whole host of other factors that contribute to evolution, and often find Darwin's theory quite inadequate to explain the facts. Darwin was handicapped by not knowing about DNA, which wasn't understood until the 1950's. Since then DNA has become the center of a huge amount of research. One of the facts that some scientists have attributed to the powers of DNA is "Intelligence" in man. Whether this spiritualizing principle in humans can be explained by DNA is a question that has to be examined closely. This book tries hard to show that it is beyond the scope of DNA. The readers will finish the book, regarding themselves as wiser for having read it, and will continue to be interested in the efforts of science to use its knowledge more effectively to take advantage of DNA studies in modern Medicine. The book quotes a lot of articles from the internet and introduces three scholars: Ian Tattersall, Curator of the American Museum of Natural History. His book is titled "Becoming Human." Stephen Meyer. His book, "The Signature in the Cell" was Book of the Year in 2009 for Time Magazine. Francis C.Collins, is the man entrusted with the project of mapping the human genome. His book is titled "The Language of God." So the author of " Steps Towards the Summit" is not just giving his opinion. He finds backing for what he writes in the three men mentioned above. As sequel to this book, the writer has written another one titled "The Best of Life." It endeavors to show that the summit of evolution for intelligent man lies in his capacity to know God as God knows Himself. This is the summit.
