Book excerpt: The rediscovery of fast ion conduction in solids in the 1960's stimulated interest both in the scientific community in which the fundamentals of diffusion, order-disorder phenomena and crystal structure evaluation required re-examination, and in the technical community in which novel approaches to energy conversion and chemical sensing became possible with the introduction of the new field of "Solid State Ionics. " Because of both the novelty and the vitality of this field, it has grown rapidly in many directions. This growth has included the discovery of many new crystalline fast ion conductors, and the extension to the fields of organic and amorphous compounds. The growth has involved the extension of classical diffusion theory in an attempt to account for carrier interactions and the development of sophisticated computer models. Diffraction techniques have been refined to detect carrier distributions and anharmonic vibrations. Similar advances in the application of other techniques such as NMR, Raman, IR, and Impedance Spectroscopies to this field have also occurred. The applications of fast ion conducting solid electrolytes have also developed in many directions. High energy density Na/S batteries are now reaching the last stages of development, Li batteries are being implanted in humans for heart pacemakers, and solid state fuel cells are again being considered for future power plants. The proliferation of inexpensive microcomputers has stimulated the need for improved chemical sensors--a major application now being the zirconia auto exhaust sensor being sold by the millions each year.

Book excerpt: The main motivation for the organization of the Advanced Research Workshop in Belgirate was the promotion of discussions on the most recent issues and the future perspectives in the field of Solid State lonics. The location was chosen on purpose since Belgirate was the place were twenty years ago, also then under the sponsorship of NATO, the very first international meeting on this important and interdisciplinary field took place. That meeting was named "Fast Ion Transport in Solids" and gathered virtually everybody at that time having been active in any aspect of motion of ions in solids. The original Belgirate Meeting made for the first time visible the technological potential related to the phenomenon of the fast ionic transport in solids and, accordingly, the field was given the name "Solid State lonics". This field is now expanded to cover a wide range of technologies which includes chemical sensors for environmental and process control, electrochromic windows, mirrors and displays, fuel cells, high performance rechargeable batteries for stationary applications and electrotraction, chemotronics, semiconductor ionics, water electrolysis cells for hydrogen economy and other applications. The main idea for holding an anniversary meeting was that of discussing the most recent issues and the future perspectives of Solid State lonics just twenty years after it has started at the same location on the lake Maggiore in North Italy.

Two distinct timescales for SO4 reorientation events are linked to different diffusion mechanisms along different crystal directions. Finally, a graph-theoretic analysis of the hydrogen-bond network topology demonstrates an increased likelihood for diffusion in connectivity configurations favoring linear network chains over closed rings. We have discovered and characterized a new phase ( -y) of the hydrogen-storage material NaAlH4 that is energetically close to the known ground state. The manifestation of this phase is kinetically inhibited in the bulk but is favored in a (001) surface slab above 225 K. The transition involves first activating the surface AlH4 rotational modes. This is followed by a lattice expansion perpendicular to the slab and a shear of successive lattice planes. A possible connection between 7-NaAlH4 and the dehydrogenation product Na3aAH6 is suggested. We also show that hydrogen transport in NaAlH4 can be treated independently from the observed phase transition, and that the presence of certain point defects can enable transport of hydrogen via a structural diffusion mechanism. A link between long-range hydrogen migration and the rotational mobility of A1Hz groups is demonstrated.

Book excerpt: A hundred and eighty five chemists, physicists, and engineers met in Schenectady, New York, for the three days May 10-12, 1976, to discuss the subject of Superionic Conductors. This International Conference was held at the Research and Development Center of the General Electric Company. The subject of the Conference was fast ion transport in solids. These materials have potential application in new types of batteries, fuel cells, and sensors. Some like beta alumina are under active development in nov'el new systems. Their study has also become a popular area of scientific investigation. One objective of the Conference was to provide a forum for interdisciplinary communication between chemists, physicists, and engineers. The Conference was an attempt to bring these groups together, in order to listen to each others problems and progress. We began organizing the Conference in the spring of 1975. It was suggested to General Electric managers Drs. Craig S. Tedmon, Jr. and Roland W. Schmitt. They provided immediate and enthusiastic support. They also provided the advice, staff, and backup which were necessary at all points in the planning and duration of the Conference. We were also pleased that they could participate in the Conference: Dr. Tedmon welcomed the participants and officially opened the Conference, and Dr. Schmitt gave the after banquet address. We thank them. Additional and invaluable help, and advice, were also provided by Drs. D. Chatterji, J. B. Bush, G. W. Ludwig, and J. B. Comly. We were joined on the program committee by Drs.

Book excerpt: Electroceramic thin films hold out the promise of applications in entirely new generations of advanced microdevices that may revolutionise technology, creating multibillion dollar markets in the process. Less glamorous than the high-temperature superconductors, but probably just as important, are electrically conductive, ferroelectric, piezoelectric, pyroelectric, electro-optic, and magnetic films. The list of potential applications of films having these properties is virtually endless, but there are still some issues to be resolved before fully functioning devices reach the market. All these issues and more are discussed in Science and Technology of Electroceramic Thin Films, which provides one of the best, most up to date summaries of the field currently available.

Book excerpt: The triennial International Alloy Conferences (lACs) aim at the identification and promotion of the common elements developed in the study, either experimental, phenomenological, or theoretical and computational, of materials properties across materials types, from metals to minerals. To accomplish this goal, the lACs bring together scientists from a wide spectrum of materials science including experiment, theory, modeling, and computation, incorporating a broad range of materials properties. The first lAC, lAC-I, took place in Athens, Greece, June 16-21, 1996. The present volume of proceedings contains the papers presented at IAC-2, that took place in Davos, Switzerland, August 8-13, 1999. The topics in this book fall into several themes, which suggest a number of different classification schemes. We have chosen a scheme that classifies the papers in the volume into the categories Microstructural Properties; Ordering, Kinetics and Diffusion; Magnetic Properties and Elastic Properties. We have juxtaposed apparently disparate of revealing the dynamic character approaches to similar physical processes, in the hope of the processes under consideration. We hope this will invigorate new kinds of discussion and reveal challenges and new avenues to the description and prediction of properties of materials in the solid state and the conditions that produce them.
