Book excerpt: Deals with doctoral students, the institutions that provided their education, and the factors--intellectual, scientific, social, political, and economic--that effected change during the most significant and tumultuous period in U.S. doctoral education from its beginnings in 1861 through 1999. Detailed tables and figures provide historical trend data for 20th century periods. Data since 1958 are from the Survey of Earned Doctorates; earlier data are from public records and the Department of Education. The report covers doctorate recipients' demographic characteristics; study fields and institutions for bachelor's, master's, and doctorate degrees; financial support; indebtedness; time from baccalaureate to doctorate; and postgraduation plans.

Book Synopsis Challenges to Research Universities by : Roger G. Noll
Download or read book Challenges to Research Universities written by Roger G. Noll and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2010-12-01 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American research university enjoyed an unprecedented boom from the end of World War II until the 1990s. All sources of financial support for universities--federal grants, private gifts, state appropriations, student tuition, and revenues from university medical centers--grew substantially. As a result, traditionally prestigious universities expanded and numerous other universities were transformed from primarily teaching institutions to significant research centers. But in the 1990s, research universities have experienced the first protracted challenge to the boom of the preceeding four decades. This book examines the nature of the challenges to research universities, and their likely effects on the number, size, and operation of these universities. The authors assess the prospects for research support from government, industry, and profits from university medical centers, and conclude that the future does not appear bright in these cases. They also examine the methods used by the federal government to pay for university research, and propose changes that would make both universities and the federal government better off by reducing the administrative costs of federal grants. Their primary conclusion is that in the next decade American research universities will face increasingly stringent budgets, and will be forced to shrink and refocus their activities in order to survive as research institutions.

Download or read book Doing Engineering written by Joyce Tang and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2000-01-12 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first to systematically compare Caucasians, African Americans, and Asian Americans in engineering, this study of the career attainment and mobility of engineers in the United States tells how these three groups fare in the American engineering labor market and what they can look forward to in the future. The numbers of black and Asian engineers recently have grown at a much faster rate than the number of Caucasian engineers. With a projected steady increase in engineering jobs and demographic shifts, this trend should continue. Yet, recent writings on the engineering profession have said little about career mobility beyond graduation. This book identifies and explores key issues determining whether minorities in the US will attain occupational equality with their Caucasian counterparts. Highlighting implications for theory, policy making, and the future of the profession, Doing Engineering offers important insights into labor, race and ethnicity that will be of interest to anyone studying stratification in a wide range of professional occupations.
