Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Letters of Robert Schumann These letters will be welcome to very many. The admirers of Schumann now number thousands in England, and the feeling towards him is a personal one - love of a friend, not admiration of a composer. It was not so always; but we have gained by the experience of thirty years. Everyone who loves him will be glad to see what manner of youth he was; how the character which we know in his music was built up; the difficulties he had, and how he subdued them; his strong love to his mother and family, and how irresistibly he was drawn against all obstacles to the art in which he became so great a master. The disclosures respecting his early compositions are hardly less interesting. The information on the origin of the early piano pieces, the first still-unpublished Symphony, the Songs - which seem to have sprung up, as it were, in a night - and all the rest, will be greedily welcomed by those who delight in this interesting branch of history. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Schumanns and Johannes Brahms: The Memoirs of Eugenie Schumann Hen I began to write down these Memoirs in the year 1920, I was guided by a definite intention. I find that erroneous statements are current concerning [the lives and characters of my brothers. To disprove these by giving a faithful picture of their personalities as they are revealed first-hand in their letters, seemed to me a duty to them not only as beloved brothers, but as sons of our parents. I am not sure that I had publication in view _i felt constrained to say how things had really been, and I started to write. One word led to another, one remembrance called forth a thousand. I wrote for the pleasure of writing I surveyed my life and lingered where I listed. The longer I wrote, the more it was my mother's personality which became the prominent one. On her eightieth birthday I surprised my sister Marie with the first five chapters. She was pleased with them. A kind publisher who read them gave me encouragement, and induced me to supplement and revise. I took up the pen once more and found that I had many more things to say. The disconnected chapters became a book. If I have given little in it, it is the best that I have to give, the memories of great and goodtcharacters, of great and good; times. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Critical Composer: The Musical Writings of Berlioz, Wagner, Schumann, Tchaikovsky, and Others I can disclaim such an intention by remarking, merely, that a man who wrote as much music as Wagner did had an understanding of the procedures and the effort by which a score is created which is not accessible to one whose approach to the art was essentially external. I am not contending that it is therefore a better, or more valid attitude - merely that it is an individual one, and worthy of attention. Certainly such translation into verbal terms of a music's effect as one finds in Wagner's wisely-flavored comments on the C sharp minor quartet of Beethoven does nor need the addi tional force of being said by the composer of Die Meistersinger. His writing conveys, in excelsis, the sensitivity to an art and a capacity for conveying that sensitivity in words which should be the basis of all critical effort. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Works of Robert Schumann The mere outward details of the life of our great master would scarcely afford sufficient matter for a prolonged account. Up to the time of that terrible event which, with fearful violence, tore him in full maturity from his family and his work, there were but few striking incidents in his life, and even these seem chiefly noteworthy from motives of affectionate regard and reverence. There are still no small number of people who have a higher and more exclusive right to his life, than the nation. To his country belongs what he achieved and created, such art treasures as he left behind in perpetual legacy; his life, on the contrary, is hers only in so far as it is revealed in these. Such are the considerations that have guided me in my work. I have striven to explain the master's mental development as it is seen in his works, and also to show his great significance in the world of art and letters. The external course of his life will be mentioned only as it affected that mental development, and as it renders his art work more intelligible. For this subordinate part of my task I have chiefly relied upon Wasielewski's careful "Life and Letters of Schumann."
