Diese Frage ist geleitet durch das Interesse, ob und in welchen Fällen Mehrsprachigkeit einen positiven oder negativen Einfluss auf den schulischen Erfolg haben kann. Um dieser Frage näher auf den Grund zu gehen, werden zunächst einige grundlegende Begriffe definiert und auf Mehrsprachigkeit als ein schulisches Ziel eingegangen, um hervorzuheben, wie wichtig der richtige Umgang und die passende Förderung von Mehrsprachigkeit in der Schule ist. Anschließend werden zwei Studien unterschiedlicher Institute dargelegt und die Ergebnisse näher betrachtet bzw. miteinander verglichen. Durch einige Studien konnte festgestellt werden, dass das mehrsprachige Aufwachsen keine negativen Konsequenzen für den schulischen Erfolg hat, dass mehrsprachige Kinder ihrer Sprachen fast immer in einem ausgewogenen Niveau mächtig sind und dass Mehrsprachigkeit sogar das Erwerben weiterer Sprachen erleichtern könnte, da es die Exekutivfunktionen des Gehirns trainiert. Andere Studien wiederum konnten feststellen, dass die Erstsprache einen negativen Einfluss auf das Erlernen der Zweitsprache haben könnte und dass Kinder aus sogenannten „Zuwandererfamilien“ ein niedrigeres Kompetenzniveau in der Schule erreichen, als monolingual aufgewachsene Kinder. Wenn es der Lehrkraft gelingt, die Mehrsprachigkeit als Segen und als etwas positives zu betrachten, erfährt der Schüler / die Schülerin dadurch automatisch Unterstützung und Motivation, was viel für den Bildungsweg beiträgt. Des Weiteren ist es wichtig, dass die jeweilige Schule ähnliche Werte und Einstellungen teilt, dementsprechend die Mehrsprachigkeit der Kinder schätzt, gegebenenfalls in den Fachunterricht mit eingliedern lässt und das Sprechen fremder Sprachen nicht unterdrückt.

Mögliche festgefahrene Mechanismen in Köpfen und Bildungspolitik, die zu einer Benachteiligung von Schüler*innen mit Deutsch als Zweitsprache führen können, werden beleuchtet. Um eine Grundlage für dieses Thema zu schaffen, werden wichtige Begrifflichkeiten geklärt und die Hintergründe von Inter-, Multi- und Transkulturalität betrachtet. Aufgezeigt wird, inwiefern sprachliche Homogenität als Ausgangslage im Schulunterricht angesehen wird sowie was dies für mehrsprachige Lernende bedeuten kann. Der Begriff Integration, in Abhängigkeit zu Bildungserfolg und dem Erlernen der Zweitsprache, aber auch Möglichkeiten für die Bereicherung durch Heterogenität und schließlich die Umsetzung des Bildungsziels Mehrsprachigkeit werden thematisiert.
