Book excerpt: Excerpt from Schools and Classes for Exceptional Children: The Child With Impaired Hearing Since the year 1898 Los Angeles has recognized the need for the special education of her deaf and hard of hearing children. One year ago they were moved into a new building especially designed to meet their physical, educational and cultural needs. This build' ing ranks with the best of our newer school buildings which have been designed to serve a similar number of pupils. The teachers of the deaf and hard of hearing are recruited by a civil service examination which has brought to our handicapped children ex, cellent teachers, thoroughly trained in the best of our nation's schools for the deaf and hard of hearing. Los Angeles transports her deaf and hard of hearing children by bus from their homes to school and ref turns them each day. We are assured that the more we can help these children the more they will be able to serve our community. This publication is designed to give desired information to parents, educators and others interested in the welfare of the deaf and hard of hearing. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How the Teacher May Help the Exceptional Child: Suggestions for the Education of Exceptional Children Who Are Not in Special Classes In recent years We have come to recognize that children entering the first grade differ widely in their capacity to achieve. While the vast majority are closely similar, at either extreme are found some who differ In marked degree from the rest. These are the exceptional children, the handicapped and the gifted, who require differential treatment and training to make the most of their possibilities. The education of these exceptional children has marked social significance since from the handicapped, those at one extreme, come dependents and delinquents in numbers all out of propor tion to their frequency in the general population, and from the gifted, those at the other extreme, come most of our leaders. Neglect of the education of the handicapped means increased dependency and delinquency; neglect of the education of the gifted means inadequate leadership. Recent research in the field of psychology indicates that the attitudes, habits and experiences of early life determine success and failure in later life to a much greater degree than was formerly thought to be the case. The proper education of every child during his early years is therefore, a matter of paramount importance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Exceptional Children and Public School Policy: Including a Mental Survey of the New Haven Elementary Schools This brief volume is based on a study of actual conditions. It aims not only to report the facts, but to give them a general interpretation from the standpoint of public policy. Our pur pose is to furnish, concisely and concretely, a just picture of the magnitude of the problem of exceptional school children, and to indicate the lines for the development of permanent constructive measures with reference to these children. In the fall of 1918 a mental survey of the elementary schools of the city of New Haven was undertaken. The survey was definitely a co-operative enterprise and depended upon the generous assistance of the regular and Special teachers who reported the data. We wish to acknowledge our indebtedness to these teachers, as well as to Miss Norma Cutts, Supervisor of Special Classes, and to Mr. Arthur Otis who rendered ao tive assistance in treating the data and preparing the same for statistical presentation. Some of the allusions in the text will be found to be purely local in character, but it is hoped that the general reader will give them an algebraic interpretation. Equivalent findings and recommendations apply to other communities, both larger and smaller. We have aimed to treat the subject in such a manner that any school board official, teacher, administrator or citizen may get a comprehensive glimpse of the problem without undue distraction by details. Therefore the discussion is uniformly brief. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Teacher's Problems With Exceptional Children, Vol. 1: Blind and Partially Seeing Children In many city school systems attempts have been made to provide for these individual needs of our boys and girls through various systems of classification, of special schools and classes, and of clinical service. In some there are well organized departments of special education with excellent supervisory facilities and trained teachers. These are point ing the way toward the means of giving adequate attention to those pupils who deviate seriously from normal in physi cal, mental, or social equipment. To many who are teaching in such cities this series of pamphlets will not offer much that is new. It is more specifically designed, first, for those teachers who are working in rural or small urban districts where no special classes exist and who must provide for exceptional children as members. Of their own groups of supposedly normal pupils; and, second, for teachers of special classes who are handicapped by the absence of con: structive supervision and perhaps even by their own lack of adequate preparation for this specialized type of education.' What, then, is the teacher's responsibility, if he belongs to either of these two groups? He cannot avoid the issue or run away from his problem, for there it is facing him day after day as he enters the classroom. If he is to meet it with any measure of success, then he has a fivefold program ahead of him. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Provisions for Exceptional Children in 191 Illinois Cities Seventeen cities having no kindergarten maintain sub-primary or pre-primary classes. The work of these classes appears to differ from that of the kindergartens in being more formal and more directly preparatory to the reading taught in the first grade. In East Aurora, Children entering school in January are placed in a sub-primary class. Those who enter in September with little or no experiencewith school life are assigned to a sub-primary for the first semester. In Johnson City, sub-primary classes are maintained in all buildings and children admitted at the age of six remain in them until they have mastered the primer and are ready to take up the first reader. Usu ally this requires about one semester. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The habit Of children over 6 years of age is to go to school. Any child who is unable to do so because he is physically crippled misses a great deal more than instruction. Many crippled children have grown up to be queer in an unnecessary degree because they have mingled so little with children of their own age. They have been treated in special fashion by their parents, sometimes harshly in ignorant homes; but more Often with a mistaken kindness which saved the poor cripple of the family all exertion and robbed him Of the ambition to develop such powers of mind and body as he possessed. For such children there is no other tonic like the give-and-take Of life in the schoolroom and on the playground.
