Book excerpt: From the author of Raise a Fist, Take a Knee and A Good Walk Spoiled, this "must-read" national bestseller takes you inside the dramatic world of the highest-pressure golf tournament in the world (Tampa Tribune). It is the tournament that separates champions from mortals. It is the starting point for the careers of future legends and can be the final stop on the down escalator for fading stars. The annual PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament is one of the most grueling competitions in any sport. Every fall, veterans and talented hopefuls sweat through six rounds of hell at Q school, as the tournament is universally known, to get a shot at the PGA Tour, vying for the 30 slots available. The grim reality: If you don't make it through Q school, you're not on the PGA tour. You're out. And those who make it to the six-day finals are the lucky ones: hundreds more players fail to get through the equally grueling first two stages of the event. John Feinstein tells the story of the players who compete for these coveted positions in the 2005 Q school as only he can. With arresting accounts from the players, established winners, rising stars, the defeated, and the endlessly hopeful, America's favorite sportswriter unearths the inside story behind the PGA Tour's brutal all-or-nothing competition.

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1985. This is a fascinating account of the life cycle of a minor literary genre, the boys’ school story. It discusses early nineteenth-century precursors of the school story – didactic works with such revealing titles as The Parents’ Assistant – and goes on to examine in detail the two major examples of the genre - Hughes’s Tom Brown’s School Days and Farrar’s Eric. The slow development of the genre during the 1860s and 1870s is traced, and its institutionalisation by Talbot Baines Reed in, for example, The Fifth Form at St Dominic’s, is described. Many similar works were subsequently published for adults and adolescents, and the author shows how they differ from the originals in being critical in tone and written to a formula in plot and style. This development is discussed in relation to the changing social structure of Britain up to 1945, by which time to life of the genre was almost ended.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After 33 years in education, author Chuck Schmidt has a treasure trove of stories to share. From his time as a teacher and award winning coach to superintendent of schools, he tells about the victories, the disappointments and the humorous incidents that make a life in education a challenging and rewarding vocation. Readers will hear stories about students producing amazingly creative work. They will hear about the politics of schools. Some will recognize themselves as parents who make excuses for the bad behavior of their child and blame everyone else for their actions. They will empathize with the administrator who has to terminate good teachers because of budget cuts. They will appreciate the dedication and commitment of teachers and administrators as they work tirelessly to help resistant students. They will be amazed at the attitudes of board members who think teachers are paid too much. They will be horrified at some of the behavior by students and teachers and will wonder why educators continue to try in the face of so many obstacles. And they will laugh at the humor that occurs so often. Throughout this book the reader will recognize the importance of relationships in a successful career in education. This is an important read for anyone contemplating entering the field of teaching or moving into educational administration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A significant factor for many people deciding where to live is the quality of the local school district, with superior schools creating a price premium for housing. The result is a “race to the top,” as all school districts attempt to improve their performance in order to attract homebuyers. Given the importance of school districts to the daily lives of children and families, it is surprising that their evolution has not received much attention. In this provocative book, William Fischel argues that the historical development of school districts reflects Americans’ desire to make their communities attractive to outsiders. The result has been a standardized, interchangeable system of education not overly demanding for either students or teachers, one that involved parents and local voters in its governance and finance. Innovative in its focus on bottom-up processes generated by individual behaviors rather than top-down decisions by bureaucrats, Making the Grade provides a new perspective on education reform that emphasizes how public schools form the basis for the localized social capital in American towns and cities.
