Book excerpt: Excerpt from School History of Virginia A very practical difficulty in the preparation of a text book on history exists in the fact that the length of the school session varies so widely in different locali ties. To meet, as far as it is possible to do, the demands of the school with a full nine months session, as well as the school with a six months session, with a single book, the School History has been so arranged that sections can be omitted without destroying the story as a whole. It is unnecessary to say that. Omissions should not be made unless necessary, but in view of actual difficulties, the text can be shortened to suit the individual school. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Virginia: For the Use of Schools In deference to the prejudices and tastes of some teachers, I have affixed questions to the different chapters, though my own experience leads me to the conviction that the best mode of teaching history is not by questions, which make the lesson a task, instead of a recreation established in the midst of dryer and more abstruse studies. Let the class read the lesson and the teacher ask full questions upon it: thus a habit of attentive reading is formed, and the history ofa single country does not employ, as is often the case, an entire session. In preparing the book I have freely made use of the labors of others, to whom only a general acknowledgment can be made. The volume is earnestly recommended to the young student, with the hope that he may strive to imitate the many worthy examples held up before him in its pages, and that he may remember that the prosperity and honor of his State in the future, as they did in the past, rest upon the shoulders of her sons. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Virginia: A Brief Text Book for Schools The Indians of virginia.-when the territory now included in Virginia was first settled by the English, it was occupied by an Indian population numbering about ten thousand, divided among more than forty clans or tribes. Each of these was ruled over by a chief; and about thirty of them were united in a loose confederacy under a head-chief named Powhatan. There were also two smaller confederacies and a few scattering tribes which maintained their independence. All the Virginia Indians belonged to the great Algonkin 1 family. It need not be said that it is impossible to describe within the limits of this volume the whole history of education in Virginia. Out of the mass of material which would have filled many volumes, the effort has been made to select only the essential facts and tell a brief story of the growth centering about these salient features. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of a Southern School: The Episcopal High School of Virginia Seven years ago, at the request of friends whose wish I had every reason to respect, I began assembling the materials for this History. I could give to it only a certain part of my summer vacations. The searching of records and the necessary correspondence with widely scattered sources of information made the process of gathering the data a slow one. Then came the tragedy of the World War with its many engrossing tasks and anxieties, and with its enlargments of the scope of the History. A great deal of time was required to bring this part of the record to its present measure of completeness, and it is the result of indefatigable labor by members of the School staff. As a human document this history should contain much of living interest. Among schools of like character the Episcopal High School has achieved a singularly honorable name for its atmosphere, standards and results. A leading Northern educator, whose life has been given to the religious education of boys, said lately after a wide tour of inspection: "I know of no better work than that which is being done at the Episcopal High School of Virginia." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History and Government of West Virginia The idea of preparing a history of West Virginia as text-book for use in the public and private schools of the State was not born of a sudden impulse. For more than a quarter of a century the author has been engaged in public school work, and nearly all that time in active classwork in the schoolroom. While so engaged he became strongly impressed with the fact that any course of instruction is seriously defective if it does not include a study that enables pupils to grow familiar with the history of their own State and people. History is also entitled to a place in the curriculum because it possesses high value as a character-builder, because its subject-matter is in itself deeply interesting, and because it readily leads into other subjects of the school course. This book has been prepared for the use of schools, and its aim is to place in the hands of the children of West Virginia a faithful, non-sectarian and non-partisan history of the State in which they will eventually have to discharge the duties of citizens or residents. As West Virginia is one of the many States composing the Great Republic, enough of national history has been interwoven to enable the pupil to perceive in what manner and to what extent the local laws, customs and institutions of the State have been affected by events occurring in the progress of the Nation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the University of Virginia, 1819-1919, Vol. 4: The Lengthened Shadow of One Man Previous to the war, there had been a professor assigned to each of the two departments. Now there was one alone in charge of both. This was the sole point of divergence between the two periods. But with all his remarkable power of industry, it was as impossible now as it had been prior to 1861, for him to conduct the School of Law without aid. Had the attendance con tinned small, the task of doing so might have been per formed successfully; but the large number Of students who flocked to his lecture-room during the opening ses sion made it as imperative for him to seek assistance now as it had been at the time when James P. Holcombe was appointed for his relief. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Primary Education and the Race Problem: An Address to the People of Virginia The inauguration of the public free school system in Virginia dates from the adoption of the Underwood Constitution by vote of the people on July 6th, 1869. Article 8, Section 3 provides: "The general assembly shall provide by law at its first session under this Constitution, a uniform system of public free schools and for its gradual, equal and full introduction into all the Counties of the State by the year 1876, or as much earlier as practicable." Coming as it did upon the heels of a great war in which was involved the question of liberating four millions of people for whom it was claimed, by the victorious side, equal civil and political rights, there is left no room to doubt that it was the purpose of the framers of the Constitution that every child in the State should have equal opportunity to get an education. Not willing to leave the matter of developing this system to the discretion of the legislature, the framers made it mandatory that the law inaugurating the system should be passed at the first session held under the Constitution. Nor willing to rest here, they evidently mistrusting the legislature (with how much reason its subsequent acts will show), limited the time for complete inauguration and establishment in all the Counties of the State to the year 1876. Article 8, Section 8 provides: "The general assembly shall apply the annual interest on the literary fund, the capitation tax provided for by this Constitution for public free school purposes and an annual tax upon the property of the State of not less than one mill nor more than five mills on the dollar, for the equal benefit of all the people of the State, the number of children between the ages of five and twenty-one years in each public free school district being the basis of such division. Provision shall be made to supply children attending the public free schools with the necessary text-books in cases where the parent or guardian, by reason of poverty, is unable to furnish them. Each County and public free school district may raise additional sums by a tax on property for the support of public free schools. All unexpended sums of any one year in any public free school district shall go into the general school fund for re-division the next year.
