Book excerpt: This new edition of an internationally renowned classic book provides a new comprehensive framework of latest perspectives and findings, fills gaps in the ongoing research, policy and practice, and re-engineers a school-based mechanism for understanding and managing school-based development initiatives. The book addresses the burning issues about how school-based management (SBM) and school effectiveness should be related to the new paradigm in education and the third wave of education reforms worldwide. The book includes four parts and 12 chapters covering (1) School Effectiveness (i.e., multiple school functions, models of effectiveness and pursuit of dynamic effectiveness); (2) SBM (i.e., theories of SBM, multi-level self-management (SM), and its implementation); (3) Leadership for Change (i.e., leadership for SBM, staff development, school-based change, and curriculum change); and (4) Future Developments (i.e., an SBM mechanism for effectiveness and paradigm shift towards the third wave). The framework and related analysis will benefit the understanding, policy formulation, school practice and research of the key stakeholders including policy makers, educators, change agents, researchers and those concerned in facing the challenges from the ongoing education reforms in different parts of the world.

Book Synopsis Creating an Excellent School by : Hedley Beare
Download or read book Creating an Excellent School written by Hedley Beare and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-11 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1989. The pursuit of excellence is much discussed with reference to education, but the question remains, ’How can a school become excellent?’ This book demonstrates that excellence depends on good management which, in turn, depends not only on a clear understanding of good management theory, but on the ability to translate theory into practice. The authors offer profound insights into three crucial areas of leadership: culture, structure, and public accountability. Drawing on areas outside education, such as advertising and business, they discuss many innovations that are already current - flexitime, the vertical curriculum, mastery learning, community support - and depict ways in which these can be brought together into a total educational experience. More strikingly, however, they look ahead, examining the potential changes to our concept of schooling: for instance those brought about by the growth of information technology. This book emphasises that at the heart of outstanding schooling are visionary leadership, a clear sense of purpose, and creatively conceived and flexible support structures.

Book Synopsis Implementing School-based Management by : Harry P. Hatry
Download or read book Implementing School-based Management written by Harry P. Hatry and published by The Urban Insitute. This book was released on 1993 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the findings and recommendations of an examination of the implementation of a major form of school-based management (SBM). It is based on case studies of the science and mathematics departments of 10 high schools and 9 middle or junior high schools in 12 school systems, almost all of which are urban school districts. The study found that implementation often falls short of the ideal. It did not find dramatic changes resulting from SBM. However, those schools and faculty members that took advantage of their added flexibility under SBM were able to achieve numerous small-scale improvements. The report provides a series of recommendations for school districts and individual schools to increase the likelihood of successful implementation of decentralization efforts such as SBM. The findings and recommendations cover such issues as (1) the extent of decentralization of budgeting expenditure and personnel decisions, (2) the role of site councils and department heads, and (3) communication and training needs. Appendixes list participating schools and districts and contain a literature review. (Contains 117 references.) (Author/SLD)
Book Synopsis Community Participation with Schools in Developing Countries by : Mikiko Nishimura
Download or read book Community Participation with Schools in Developing Countries written by Mikiko Nishimura and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-08-04 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) (2016-2030) set by the United Nations in 2015 restated the importance of universal primary education for all, and specifically discuss quality, equity, and inclusion in basic education. To achieve this, the role of community has been emphasized and participation has become a "buzzword" in international development over the past several decades. Despite the growing attention to community participation in school management, previous literature has shown mixed results in terms of its actual practice and its impacts on quality, equity, and inclusion in education. This book deepens the contextual understanding of community in developing countries and its involvement in schools in general, and its impact on quality, equity, and inclusion of school education in particular. By presenting various case studies in Asia, Africa, Latin America, and a post-conflict state in Europe, the book analyses commonalities and differences in the ways communities are involved and cast their impacts and challenges. The book contributes knowledge on the ways in which community involvement could work in developing countries, the detailed processes and factors that make community participation work in different dimensions, and remaining challenges that scholars and practitioners still need to be concerned and mindful in the field. This book will appeal to both researchers and practitioners who are concerned about the community participation approach for the SDGs.
Book Synopsis Developing Effective School Management by : Jack Dunham
Download or read book Developing Effective School Management written by Jack Dunham and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 2004. It is increasingly being recognised within the profession that those taking on the management of curricular or pastoral teams need specific training in the skills of management in order to tackle the complex responsibilities of the middle management role. However, this is an area in which there has tended to be a training gap. In this book, Jack Dunham makes a significant contribution towards redressing the balance and helps teachers to identify and develop the knowledge and skills needed to become effective middle managers in primary or secondary schools. He focuses on four main areas: staff management, management skills, professional development and change, and stress management. This book will be invaluable to all those seeking or already acting in the crucial middle management role in schools.
