They believe further that arithmetic should be treated as a means to an end and not as an end in itself. As a means, arithmetic becomes but a phase or aspect of a larger division of human thought. Rural life involves problems of soil improvement, crop improvement, feeding, building, fencing, marketing, fruit-growing, cooking, decorating, commerce, business forms, and accounts.
