Book Synopsis The First Schleswig-Holstein War 1848-50 by : Nick Svendsen

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1848 was a turbulent but momentous time in Europe. Within this context, the Duchies of Schleswig and Holstein were caught between the rising nationalism and desire for unification of the Prussian/German nation states and the traditional alliances with the Danish Kingdom. The Schleswig Holsteiners decided that allegiance with the German Federation, including possessing their own constitution, was the best way forward. They rebelled against the Danish and looked to the Prussians with their greater military prowess for help. In Denmark, as in other European countries, the call for a democratic constitution caused social disturbance, triggered initially by the February riots in Paris. The Danish monarchy, in crisis, both constitutionally and in terms of monarchical succession continued to lay claim on their southernmost duchies and sent their armed forces to destroy the Schleswig-Holstein insurgents. The author describes the battles and battlefields upon which this crisis was played out: from the first major action at Bov (9 April, 1848) to the last major battles of the war, at Isted (25 July 1850) and Missunde (12 September 1850), from the geomorphic landscape influencing battlefield strategy down to the description of a farmhouse where Prussian officers jumped out of windows to save themselves from the Danish.

Book Synopsis Schleswig Holstein by : Michael Bregnsbo

Book excerpt: Schleswig and Holstein have been contested regions for more than a thousand years, but contested between different peoples and groups, and for very different reasons. In modern times, they have been closely connected to the building up of national identity and the formation of the modern nation state. Since the division in 1920 of Schleswig into a northern, Danish part and a southern, German part, this region has also been an interesting example for international studies on whether it is possible to maintain regional cultural and economic cooperation across a modern state border, and on the rights and duties of linguistic minorities. "Schleswig Holstein - contested region(s) through history" aims at viewing the areas in their own right over a period of thousand years, and not simply as appendages to modern Danish and German nation-building. This does not imply that they are seen as isolated entities, still less that the regions around them and many strong and varied influences from outside are ignored. Rather, the book aims at investigating how Schleswig and Holstein have constantly been contested places, situated where different interests and forces have collided. *** "A collective work of outstanding and seminal scholarship...comprised of fifteen eruditely written and exceptionally informative articles by expert and knowledgeable contributors. A welcome and unique contribution to the history of the region, 'Schleswig Holstein' is especially recommended for community, college, and university library European History collections in general, and Schleswig Holstein History supplemental studies reading lists in particular." --Midwest Book Review, MBR Bookwatch: October 2016, Greenspan's Bookshelf (Series: Studies in History and Social Sciences) [Subject: History, Politics]

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When first beginning research to find her family's history, Diana sought out the descendants of the Simon family in the St. Louis area to learn that the place they came from had something to do with 'swans.' She later learned that they came from Swanden, in the Canton of Glarus in Switzerland. Then through her great-grandfathers obituary in Davenport, Iowa, she was able to place the Millers/Moellers in Schoenberg, Schleswig-Holstein. The Hansens and the Carstensens were just as influential as the Carstensens were the "Kings Royal Forest Rangers." Enjoy the journey as you learn how they came to Davenport, Iowa from Schoenberg on the edge of the Baltic Sea in Germany (where they were fishermen) and the Alps of Switzerland (where they were of Jewish faith) to the small village of Cordova, on the banks of the muddy Mississippi after the Civil War. More than 40 generations, the families reach back to 860 A.D. and include medieval rulers of Europe.

Book Synopsis Queen Hedwig Eleonora and the Arts by : Lisa Skogh
Download or read book Queen Hedwig Eleonora and the Arts written by Lisa Skogh and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As queen consort and dowager, Hedwig Eleonora (1636?1715) held a unique position in Sweden for more than half a century. As the dominant collector and patron of art and architecture in the realm, she left a strong mark on Swedish court culture. Her dynastic network among the Northern European courts was extensive, and this helped to make Sweden a major cultural center in Northern Europe in the later seventeenth century. This book represents the first major scholarly publication on the full range of Hedwig Eleonora?s endeavours, from the financing of her court to her place within a larger princely network, to her engagements with various cultural pursuits, to her public image. As the contributors show, despite her high profile, political position, and conspicuous patronage, Hedwig Eleonora experienced little of the animosity directed at many other foreign queens and regents, such as the Medici in France and Henrietta Maria in England. In this way, she provides a model for a different and more successful way of negotiating the difficulties of joining a foreign court; the analysis of her circumstances thus adds a substantial dimension to the study of early modern queenship. Presenting much new scholarship, this volume highlights one extremely significant early modern woman and her imprint on Northern European history, and fosters international awareness of the importance of early modern Scandinavia for European cultural history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes the resiliency of the German community in southern Denmark in a period of national strife. It explores the experience of a small minority that was not primarily separated from its host society by visible markers of language, religion, or appearance but predominately derived its national distinction from personal self-identification. The study's findings demonstrate the significance of this community for a deeper understanding of collective identity formation.
