Book excerpt: Midway between New York City and Montreal lies Schenectady, an area that first developed as an outpost to the fur trade and for agriculture. Schenectady's future growth was assured by its location on two major water routes, the Mohawk River and the Erie Canal. Schenectady survived the massacre of 1690 and was chartered as a city in 1798, becoming only the third city in the state. At the time of the charter, Schenectady was 12 miles long by 18 miles wide. The city saw astounding growth during the industrial age which brought not only a flood of new enterprises and commerce but also elegant homes, cobblestone streets, gaslights, and trolley cars. Schenectady also contributed to the development of the nation: the Monitor's turret, M7 tanks, and World War II radio and radar equipment were produced here.

Download or read book Schenectady's Stockade written by Don Rittner and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2008-10-29 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Located in upstate New York on the western banks of the Mohawk River, Schenectadys stockade is recognized as the first historic district of New York State and has been protected by strict zoning laws since the 1960s. As one of the oldest European-settled areas in the Unites States, the stockade contains the highest concentration of historic buildings in the country. During the early 19th century, the stockade had become a center for business, but a major fire in 1819 swept most of it away. Remarkably, more than 40 buildings have remained a part of the landscape for more than two centuries. As a result, a mix of architecture from 17th-century Dutch to modern exists within the four blocks that make up the stockade. Through photographs and maps, Schenectadys Stockade: New Yorks First Historic District tells the story of one of Americas earliest communities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stranger things do tend to happen in Schenectady— once a booming metropolis nicknamed the “ City That Lights and Hauls the World” thanks to the dominating presence of General Electric and the American Locomotive Company, though those days are ancient history. GE has nearly abandoned the city, and ALCO closed up shot over fifty years ago. Hence, the title of this book: Forget It, Jake, It' s Schenectady: A Police Department Under Siege, and the Man Who Led It, a nod to the bleak conclusion of the classic film Chinatown, one of cinema' s most devastating expressions of abject resignation and defeat. A chance meeting between onetime Schenectady Police Chief Gregory Kaczmarek and author David Bushman in a Lyft car that Kaczmarek was driving was the genesis of this book, originally intended to track the rise and fall of a veteran cop with what appear to be two defining traits— an almost inhuman capacity for perseverance and a truly remarkable ability to attract notoriety and criticism. However, as the author' s research— including interviews with over two dozen people who lived through the events depicted in these pages.

Book excerpt: Professor Flom lays out the establishment of every significant Norwegian settlement in America prior to the revolutionary year 1848. Most of the 19th-century Norwegians were from the districts of Stavanger, Haugesund, Ryfylke, Voss, Upper Telemarken, and West Numedal. Flom then follows the settlers as they begin to dot the countryside of the Midwest, to communities like Fox River and Beaver Creek, Illinois; Koshkonong and Blue Mounds, Wisconsin; and Clayton and Allamakee counties, Iowa. The work boasts of a bibliography and a number of tables that illustrate the distribution of Norwegian-Americans throughout the country.
