Book excerpt: Flexible Distribution Networks facilitates the enhanced flexibility, efficiency and reliability of distribution networks under complex operating environments delivered by high DG penetration. Considering the high share of DG and flexibility improvement brought by SOP-type power electronic devices, the work aims to solve the issues of optimal operation of flexible distribution networks. Technical solutions for flexible operation problems of FDN are discussed in depth, including efficient analytical methods with high penetration of DG, SOP-based optimal operation methods with uncertainty, and high-performance convex optimization algorithms. Readers will develop sound knowledge and gain insights into the optimal operation of FDN with high penetration of DG. - Provides efficient operation analysis methods for FDN with high penetration of distributed generators - Proposes measurement-based network estimation methods to improve the observability of network states - Develops SOP-based optimal operation methods to facilitate the flexible operation of FDN under complex and uncertain environments - Expounds local control frameworks to realize the rapid and effective implementation of flexible operation strategies - Reviews high-performance convex optimization methods to realize the efficient solving of optimal operation problems in FDN

Book excerpt: This 2014 Article IV Consultation highlights that with subdued international prices, inflationary pressures in Mauritius declined in 2013, despite the public sector wage increases. The unemployment rate was unchanged compared with 2012 at 8 percent. Credit to private sector growth remained robust. On the external front, the current account deficit widened to almost 10 percent of GDP in 2013. The reserve cover of imports of goods and services stayed constant at 41⁄2 months with the Bank of Mauritius accumulating additional net international reserves. The structural primary deficit was broadly unchanged relative to 2011.

Book excerpt: "The industrial or energetic use of woody or herbal biomass can provide solutions to the ecologic and economic problems of the growing worldwide demand for energy and fuel. A two-year research exchange named Biociclo between the Universidad de Concepcion (Chile) and the Universitat Karlsruhe (TH) (Germany) aimed at establishing contracts for supporting joint research in the field. This book contains the contributions for the final workshop of this exchange funded by the German BMBF and the Chilean CONICYT. It reflects the internationality and interdisciplinarity of the workshop's participants and the scope of the contributed papers about Biomass Utilization Paths in Chile, Pyrolysis and Life-Cycle Assessment of Biomass and Logistic Concepts of Biomass Utilization Concepts. We are glad to offer a documentation, which may foster the exchange of scientific approaches and their practical application."--Publisher's description.

Book excerpt: Geothermal energy is the thermal energy generated and stored in the Earth's core, mantle, and crust. Geothermal technologies are used to generate electricity and to heat and cool buildings. To develop accurate models for heat and mass transfer applications involving fluid flow in geothermal applications or reservoir engineering and petroleum industries, a basic knowledge of the rheological and transport properties of the materials involved (drilling fluid, rock properties, etc.)—especially in high-temperature and high-pressure environments—are needed. This Special Issue considers all aspects of fluid flow and heat transfer in geothermal applications, including the ground heat exchanger, conduction and convection in porous media. The emphasis here is on mathematical and computational aspects of fluid flow in conventional and unconventional reservoirs, geothermal engineering, fluid flow, and heat transfer in drilling engineering and enhanced oil recovery (hydraulic fracturing, CO2 injection, etc.) applications.

Book excerpt: This Selected Issues paper assesses the importance of oil and interest rate spillovers for Saudi Arabia. Oil prices have fallen by more than 40 percent since mid-2014 while the Federal Reserve is expected in the coming months to begin raising its policy rate at the beginning of a gradual tightening cycle. Given the importance of oil to the economy and the peg of the riyal to the U.S. dollar, these are two key developments for Saudi Arabia. Although a temporary drop in oil prices would likely have little effect on the economy and banks given the financial cushions that have been built-up, a longer-lasting period of low oil prices would have a more significant impact.

Book excerpt: With the enlargement of the European Union, the accession countries are coming under pressure to develop and meet EU standards for environmental protection and sustainable development. In this ongoing process, global economic liberalization, regulatory policy, conservation, and lifestyle issues are all involved, and creative solutions will have to be found. Historians, geographers, economists, ecologists, business management experts, public policy specialists, and community organizers have come together in this volume and examine, for the first time, environmental issues ranging from national and regional policy and macroeconomics to local studies in community regeneration. The evidence suggests that, far from being mere passive recipients of instruction and assistance from outside, the people of Central and East Central Europe have been engaged actively in working out solutions to these problems. Several promising cases illustrate opportunities to overcome crisis situations and offer examples of good practices, while others pose warnings. The experiences of these countries in wrestling with issues of sustainability continue to be of importance to policy development within the EU and may serve also as examples for both developed and developing countries worldwide.
