Book excerpt: Uncovering stories about disability history and life, OToole shares her firsthand account of some of the most dramatic events in Disability History, and gives voice to those too often yet left out. From the 504 Sit-in and the founding of the Center for Independent Living in Berkeley, to the Disability Forum at the International Woman's Conference in Beijing; through dancing, sports, queer disability organizing and being a disabled parent, OToole explores her own and the disability community's power and privilege with humor, insight and honest observations. "Corbett Joan OToole's Fading Scars: My Queer Disabled History is like a song-an anthem, a lullaby, a ballad, a love lyric and a chant all at once. This book of essays chronicles one person's life, but also the 40 years that disability rights and disability justice shaped American history. Its first-person accounts of historical events, fierce focus on disabled identities, and consistently accessible language and structure make it unusual-perhaps even unique-among disability memoirs. Bursting with ideas, stories, and arguments, Fading Scars is a book in which experience accrues into knowledge and emerges through the written word as wisdom. Fading Scars combines razor-sharp organization with passages of lyrical beauty. It establishes a new standard, perhaps even the beginning of a new aesthetic, for disability writing." - Margaret Price, author ofMad at School: Rhetorics of Mental Disability and Academic Life. "Illuminating disability history with clear and funny stories, this book builds a home where those of us who have lived on the sidelines can seek shelter." - Naomi Ortiz, Writer, Artist and Disability Justice Activist "Fading Scars is a must read for those interested in disability community, activism, and scholarship." - Kim Nielsen, author of A Disability History of the United States (ReVisioning American History)"

Book excerpt: Getting burnt is a painful situation to go through and when you have to add being scarred not only physically but also emotionally from the experience, it only makes it worse. There is a different classification of the burns that people suffer; they are placed into categories of first, second and third degree burns to speak to the degree to which the burn has penetrated the skin as well as the tissues. The flesh can be burnt via electricity, chemicals, friction, and heat, among others. There are ways in which to treat burns, but it is dependent on the degree of the burn that you will make the decision as to if it can be treated at home using natural remedies or if you will need to see a doctor immediately so as to avoid infection and even death as the latter is possible if the burn is not treated properly. There are also ways and means by which you can prevent the scarring of the burnt area, or to reduce the level of scarring that result from you being burnt. There are also methods that can be used to fade the scars that you receive as a result of being burnt, albeit these scars cannot be completely removed. The way you treat your burn in the first instance of being burnt will be a big determinant of if you are scarred any at all as well as to the level of scarring that will result in the long run.Table of ContentsTypes Of Burn Scars : 2nd Or 3rd Degree BurnsPrevent Burn Scars : A Few Steps On Preventing Burn ScarsHealing Burn Scars : Medical Healing MethodsCream For Burn Scars : Brands We Recommend That WorkHow To Treat Burn Scars : A Few Tips On How To Treat ThemHow To Heal Burn Scars : Simple Guide On TreatingHow To Remove Burn Scars Naturally : Home Remedies For BurnHow To Reduce Burn ScarsHow To Fade Burn ScarsVitamin E For Burn Scars : How This WorksBio Oil For Burn Scars : Is This An Option For EveryoneLaser Treatment For Burn Scars : Is It Worth It

Book excerpt: Relatable, heartbreaking, and real, this is a story of resilience--the perfect novel for readers of powerful contemporary fiction like Girl in Pieces and Every Last Word. Before, I was a million things. Now I'm only one. The Burned Girl. Ava Lee has lost everything there is to lose: Her parents. Her best friend. Her home. Even her face. She doesn't need a mirror to know what she looks like--she can see her reflection in the eyes of everyone around her. A year after the fire that destroyed her world, her aunt and uncle have decided she should go back to high school. Be "normal" again. Whatever that is. Ava knows better. There is no normal for someone like her. And forget making friends--no one wants to be seen with the Burned Girl, now or ever. But when Ava meets a fellow survivor named Piper, she begins to feel like maybe she doesn't have to face the nightmare alone. Sarcastic and blunt, Piper isn't afraid to push Ava out of her comfort zone. Piper introduces Ava to Asad, a boy who loves theater just as much as she does, and slowly, Ava tries to create a life again. Yet Piper is fighting her own battle, and soon Ava must decide if she's going to fade back into her scars . . . or let the people by her side help her fly. "A heartfelt and unflinching look at the reality of being a burn survivor and at the scars we all carry. This book is for everyone, burned or not, who has ever searched for a light in the darkness." --Stephanie Nielson, New York Times bestselling author of Heaven Is Here and a burn survivor

Book excerpt: From a writer whose work has been called “breathtaking and dazzling” by Roxane Gay, this moving, illuminating, and multifaceted memoir explores, in a series of essays, the emotional scars we carry when dealing with mental and physical illnesses—reminiscent of The Collected Schizophrenias and An Unquiet Mind. In this stunning debut, Laura Lee weaves unforgettable and eye-opening essays on a variety of taboo topics. In “History of Scars” and “Aluminum’s Erosions,” Laura dives head-first into heavier themes revolving around intimacy, sexuality, trauma, mental illness, and the passage of time. In “Poetry of the World,” Laura shifts and addresses the grief she feels by being geographically distant from her mother whom, after being diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s, is relocated to a nursing home in Korea. Through the vivid imagery of mountain climbing, cooking, studying writing, and growing up Korean American, Lee explores the legacy of trauma on a young queer child of immigrants as she reconciles the disparate pieces of existence that make her whole. By tapping into her own personal, emotional, and psychological struggles in these powerful and relatable essays, Lee encourages all of us to not be afraid to face our own hardships and inner truths.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scars...what are they? Scars are evidence that someone or something once caused an injury to a certain area which resulted in a wound that eventually healed. They are the result of a major or minor trauma. From an old battle scar to a previously painful paper cut, physical scars are real. But...what about the scars that eyes cannot see, cocoa butter cannot fade and a laser cannot remove? Truth is, we all have them; deeply hidden scars that are the evidence of past hurts. Some wounds never healed properly and caused more damage later on in the same area of the scar. It's called scar tissue which eventually will have to be surgically removed or it will cause an imperfection to the surface of the skin or internal damage. Yes...more pain, ! Have you ever heard the expression "that was the straw that broke the camel's back"? Let me break that down for you. If a lake is frozen over and a hammer continues to hit the lake's surface at the same place, it will eventually break. Okay...so...if you continue to experience the same type of hurt in the same area of your life, eventually you're going to break. The thing about life that we all must understand is that we all have wounds that eventually heal but whether seen on the surface or not, we all have scars. I wanted to start this book by introducing myself. Hello, my name is Latrese. I'm FLAWED but not ashamed & I COME WITH SCARS! A few years ago, there was a very popular television show that featured on primetime television in which people with issues with hoarding would receive help with cleaning up and out the clutter in their homes. I would watch the show as relatives, friends, neighbors, etc. would offer their opinions about what happened to their loved one that caused them to go "downhill." As the video cameras peruse the house, inside and out, the viewers are able to see the total disorganization, disarray, and dysfunction; some hazardous materials, dirty piles of clothing, food, newspapers, toys, cars, numerous animals, etc.; just a "bunch of junk"! Some of the people, labeled as "Hoarders," were faced with some serious risks. Many were at risk of losing their homes, others at risk of losing custody of their children, some were at risk of losing relationships with their family members, significant others, friends, etc. and all of them jeopardized their health. One might think, "That person is crazy. There must be something psychologically wrong with them. Don't they care about their health? Don't they care about their relationships? Don't they care about their children?" TRUTH is, if some of us would take a realistic look into our emotional mirrors, our hearts look just like their homes. The thing that struck me as interesting is how the show would bring in a clean-up crew and a psychologist/counselor to assist the "Hoarder" with cleaning up the mess; however, the "Hoarder" was allowed to mark (by placing an "X" on various objects) what stayed and what would go. That action alone reinforced my belief that at the end of the day, we can have a million people in our lives and in our corners but it is strictly up to us to determine who or what stays in our hearts and who or what goes. My hope for you is that after reading this book, you will choose to live free.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A number of scar revision techniques can be utilized to treat specific types of scars, in combination with each other or with adjunctive therapies to achieve optimal results. Pathological conditions like hypertrophic scars and keloids are still challenging. Though a number of therapies exist to treat keloids, such as intralesional steroids and anti-metabolites, cryosurgery, to name a few, none are definitive in treatment. Understanding the molecular basis of keloids may lead to development of new therapies. Striae, also known as ‘stretch marks’, are extremely common, disfiguring and a real challenge to treat. Management of striae is a neglected field of research. Except for topical retinoids, the efficacy satisfactorily. Current treatment options include chemical peels, lasers and collagen induction therapy, with a tendency towards active intervention. However, studies are necessary to determine treatment strategies which produce results that are effective with minimal adverse effects. Post-acne scarring is one of the most common causes of facial scars, causing considerable cosmetic disability. Acne is a common skin disorder, unfortunately affecting a large number of teenagers. Usually patients have a combination of different types of scars; hence no single modality is useful. A combination of procedures is generally required for a satisfactory cosmetic outcome. The use of fractional lasers is gaining importance, as it is a minimally invasive procedure as compared to aggressive resurfacing procedures of the past. Collagen induction therapy is another promising technique. Today, patients are also getting up-to-date information about the various modalities available for scar treatment through media, such as magazines, advertisements and internet. However, exaggerated advertisements and information from nonprofessional sources, particularly with regard to lasers can influence patient expectations and result in unrealistic expectations. Patients need to understand that deep scars cannot be eliminated fully and can only be improved. They usually have high expectations from procedural techniques. Proper counseling is extremely important for a happy and satisfactory outcome. Current innovations and techniques in scar prevention and management and increasing use of minimally invasive surgeries are paving the way toward smoother, less noticeable scars. Every surgeon practicing aesthetics should be well versed with modalities of scar management and this is the aim of this clinical update.

Book excerpt: Profound reflections on the cross that help you to meditate on and marvel at the sacrificial love of Jesus. This book can be used as a devotional, especially during Lent and Easter. These profound reflections on the cross from David Mathis, author of The Christmas We Didn’t Expect, will help you to meditate on and marvel at Jesus’ life, sacrificial death, and spectacular resurrection-enabling you to treasure anew who Jesus is and what he has done. Many of us are so familiar with the Easter story that it becomes easy to miss subtle details and difficult to really enjoy its meaning. This book will help you to pause and marvel at Jesus, whose now-glorified wounds are a sign of his unfailing love and the decisive victory that he has won: “He was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.” (Isaiah 53:5) This book can be used as a devotional. The chapters on Holy Week make it especially helpful during the Lent season and at Easter.

Book excerpt: Turning Your Scars into Stars is about emotional scars on the heart, spirit, and soul. These types of scars are the most difficult and painful to heal. They consist of abandonment, chronic hurt, pain, rejection, and death. Two verses that comfort me tremendously are Deuteronomy 31:8, which says, "The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged" (NIV), and also 1 Corinthians 10:13, which says, "God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can endure it" (NIV). My name is Edith Dolores Roman, and I must be honest and tell you that sometimes when life hit me full force, I felt that the challenges I faced were beyond my ability to overcome! Starting with my childhood, I was orphaned at age eleven, became a foster child, and eventually struggled to raise my two children as a single mother. However, with prayer, persistence, and the strength of God, I was able to overcome, and you are able to also! One more verse that helps me to continue to persevere through my problems is found in 2 Corinthians 12:9, when God reminds his servants, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness" (NIV). This book is intended to help people in struggles go from the pit to the peak! My prayer is that this book will help you heal and that it will nurture your soul, just like Proverbs 16:24 says, "Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones" (NIV).
