Book excerpt: Inclusive electron scattering from nuclei at low momentum transfer (corresponding to x ≥ 1) and moderate Q2 is dominated by quasifree scattering from nucleons. In the impulse approximation, the cross section can be directly connected to the nucleon momentum distribution via the scaling function F(y). The breakdown of the y-scaling assumptions in certain kinematic regions have prevented extraction of nucleon momentum distributions from such a scaling analysis. With a slight modification to the y-scaling assumptions, it is found that scaling functions can be extracted which are consistent with the expectations for the nucleon momentum distributions.

Book excerpt: We will present results from a recently completed experiment (E02-019) at Jefferson Lab in which 6 GeV electrons were scattered from a series of both light and heavy nuclei at high momentum transfers. The scattered electrons were detected in the High Momentum Spectrometer in Hall C at angles between 18 and 50 degrees and with momenta between 2 and 5 GeV. This experiment extends the kinematic coverage of inclusive electron-nucleus scattering at high momentum transfer to large Bjorken x, forbidden for the free nucleon. These new data present the opportunity to the investigate the transition from a regime where the cross sections are dominated by quasielastic scattering and where nucleon degrees of freedom hold sway, to one where the reaction is deep inelastic in nature and described by the more fundamental quarks and gluons. A brief description of the experiment will be followed by a presentation of the preliminary data along with a discussion of the scaling behavior of the data.

Book excerpt: The inclusive A(e, e[prime]) cross section for x[approx-equal] 1 was measured on[sup 2]H, C, Fe, and Au for momentum transfers Q[sup 2] from 1-7 (GeV/c)[sup 2]. The scaling behavior of the data was examined in the region of transition from y-scaling to x-scaling. Throughout this transitional region, the data exhibit[zeta]-scaling, reminiscent of the Bloom-Gilman duality seen in free nucleon scattering.

Book excerpt: CEBAF experiment e89-008 measured inclusive electron scattering from nuclei in a Q2 range between 0.8 and 7.3 (GeV/c)2 for x{sub Bjorken} approximately greater than 1. The cross sections for scattering from D C, Fe, and Au were measured. The C, Fe, and Au data have been analyzed in terms of F(y) to examine y-scaling of the quasielastic scattering, and to study the momentum distribution of the nucleons in the nucleus. The data have also been analyzed in terms of the structure function vW2 to examine scaling of the inelastic scattering in x and xi and to study the momentum distribution of the quarks. In the regions where quasielastic scattering dominates the cross section (low Q2 or large negative values of y), the data are shown to exhibit y-scaling. However, the y-scaling breaks down once the inelastic contributions become large. The data do not exhibit x-scaling, except at the lowest values of x, while the structure function does appear to scale in the Nachtmann variable, xi.

The measured energy transfers and angles correspond to a kinematic range for Bjorken x>1 and momentum transfers from Q2 = 1-7 (GeV/c)2. When analyzed in terms of the y-scaling function the data show for the first time an approach to scaling for values of the initial nucleon momenta significantly greater than the nuclear matter Fermi momentum (i.e.,>0.3 GeV/c).

Book excerpt: Inclusive electron scattering from nuclei at large x and Q^ is the result of a reaction mechanism that includes both quasi-elastic scattering from nucleons and deep inelastic scattering from the quark consitituents of the nucleons. Data in this regime can be used to study a wide variety of topics, including the extraction of nuclear momentum distributions, the influence of final state interactions and the approach to _v-scaling, the strength of nucleon-nucleon correlations, and the approach to x- scaling, to name a few. Selected results from the recent experiment E02-019 at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility will be shown and their relevance discussed.

Specific kinematic shifts of the single-nucleon response in the nuclear medium can be incorporated with this model. Suggested generalizations beyond the strict Fermi gas model, including treatments of separated longitudinal and transverse responses, are also explored.

Book excerpt: Inclusive electron scattering data are presented for 2H and Fe targets at an incident electron energy of 4.045 GeV for a range of momentum transfers from Q2 = 1 to 7 (GeV/c)2. Data were taken at Jefferson Laboratory for low values of energy loss, corresponding to values of Bjorken x greater than or near 1. The structure functions do not show scaling in x in this range, where inelastic scattering is not expected to dominate the cross section. The data do show scaling, however, in the Nachtmann variable [xi]. This scaling may be the result of Bloom Gilman duality in the nucleon structure function combined with the Fermi motion of the nucleons in the nucleus. The resulting extension of scaling to larger values of [xi] opens up the possibility of accessing nuclear structure functions in the high-x region at lower values of Q2 than previously believed.

Book excerpt: Experiment E02-019, performed in Hall C at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (TJNAF), was a measurement of inclusive electron cross sections for several nuclei (2H,3He, 4He, 9Be,12C, 63Cu, and 197Au) in the quasielastic region at high momentum transfer. In the region of low energy transfer, the cross sections were analyzed in terms of the reduced response, F(y), by examining its y-scaling behavior. The data were also examined in terms of the nuclear structure function [nu]WA 2 and its behavior in x and the Nachtmann variable [xi]. The data show approximate scaling of [nu]WA 2 in [xi] for all targets at all kinematics, unlike scaling in x, which is confined to the DIS regime. However, y-scaling observations are limited to the kinematic region dominated by the quasielastic response (y

It is shown that these ratios are independent of xB at Q2> 1.4 GeV2 for xB> 1.5, where the inclusive cross section depends primarily on the high momentum components of the nuclear wave function. The observed scaling shows that the momentum distributions at high-momenta have the same shape for all nuclei and differ only by a scale factor. The observed onset of the scaling at Q2> 1.4 GeV2 and xB> 1.5 is consistent with the kinematical expectation that two-nucleon short range correlations (SRC) dominate the nuclear wave function at pm300 MeV/c. The values of these ratios in the scaling region can be related to the relative probabilities of SRC in nuclei with A3. Our data, combined with calculations and other measurements of the 3He/deuterium ratio, demonstrate that for nuclei with A12 these probabilities are 4.9-5.9 times larger than in deuterium, while for 4He it is larger by a factor of about 3.8.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The impulse approximation (IA) predicts that momentum distributions, n/sub k/, in many-body systems should be measurable by inclusive quasielastic scattering at high energy and momentum (w, Q) transfer. The observations that the cross section appears to satisfy ''Y-scaling'' (i.e., is a function not of both w and Q of a single variable, Y) is usually taken as a signature of the IA. In nuclear physics, inelastic electron scattering at GeV energies should reveal the high momentum components of the nuclear wave function. In quantum fluids, neutron scattering at hundreds of MeV energies should measure the Bose condensate in superfluid 4He and the Fermi surface discontinuity and depletion of the Fermi sea in 3He. In molecular and condensed matter systems, X-ray Compton scattering at keV energies reveals electronic n/sub k/. Such experiments test many-body wave functions calculated by methods such as Green Function and Path Integral Monte Carlo, and Fermi Hypernetted Chain. However, an outstanding issue has been the corrections to the IA due to the scattering of the recoiling particle from neighboring particles, which are termed ''final state effects'' (FSE). The FSE should be especially important in nuclei and quantum fluids where the potentials have steeply repulsive cores. While there have been a variety of theories proposed for FSE, until now none has been adequately tested by experiment. Recently, the ''hard core perturbation theory'' (HCPT) for FSE in quantum fluids by Silver has been successfully compared to new neutron scattering measurements on 4He by P.E. Sokol and colleagues. In this paper, we shall discuss the lessons of this success for the extraction of n/sub k/ in nuclei by inclusive ''quasielastic electron-nucleus scattering'' (QENS). 19 refs., 12 figs.
