Since in these reactors the gas dynamic dictates the bed hydrodynamics, the new mechanistic scale-up methodology is based on maintaining similar or closer time averaged radial profiles of gas holdups at a height within the bed in two different gas-solid fluidized beds in order to achieve local and global similarity of dimensionless hydrodynamic parameters. The findings validate the achievement of hydrodynamics similarity in local solids and gas holdups distribution obtained by CT technique and in three dimension local solids velocities, solids shear stresses, normal stresses, turbulent kinetic energy, and turbulent eddy diffusivities measured by RPT technique. Also in this work we found based on local hydrodynamic parameters obtained by using CT and RPT that the scale-up method of matching a set of dimensionless groups is invalid for hydrodynamics similarity and the proposed dimensionless groups are insufficient to capture the key phenomena in these reactors. This has been successfully achieved. However, the literature reported scale-up methodology based on matching selected dimensionless groups was examined and it was found that it was not easy to match the dimensionless groups and hence, there was some deviation in the hydrodynamics of the studied two different fluidized beds. A new technique based on gamma ray densitometry (GRD) was successfully developed and utilized to on-line monitor the implementation of scale-up, to identify the flow regime, and to measure the radial or diameter profiles of gas and solids holdups. CFD has been demonstrated as a valuable tool to enable the implementation of the newly developed scale-up methodology based on finding the conditions that provide similar or closer radial profile or cross sectional distribution of the gas holdup. As gas velocity increases, solids holdup in the center region of the column decreases in the fully developed region of both 6 inch and 18 inch diameter columns. Solids holdup increased with the increase in the particles size and density. Upflowing particles velocity increased with the gas velocity and became steeper at high superficial gas velocity at all axial heights where the center line velocity became higher than that in the wall region. Smaller particles size and lower density gave larger upflowing particles velocity. Minimum fluidization velocity and transition velocity from bubbly to chum turbulent flow regimes were found to be lower in 18 inch diameter column compared to those obtained in 6 inch diameter column. Also the absolute fluctuation of upflowing particles velocity multiplied by solids holdups as one of the terms for solids mass flux estimation was found to be larger in 18-inch diameter column than that in 6-inch diameter column using same particles size and density"--Abstract, leaf iii.

Advanced gas-solid optical probes were developed and used to evaluate different hydrodynamic parameters of spouted beds. These optical probes measure solids concentration, velocity and their time series fluctuations. Since solids concentration needs to be converted to solids holdup through calibration, for meaningful interpretation of results, a novel calibration method was proposed (which is inexpensive and reliable compared to the current reported methods) and validated in the present study. The reported dimensionless groups approach of spouted bed scale-up was assessed and was found that the two different spouted beds were not hydrodynamically similar. Hence, a new scale-up methodology based on maintaining similar or close radial profiles of gas holdup was proposed, assessed and validated. CFD was used after it was validated as an enabling tool to facilitate the implementation of the newly developed scale-up methodology by identifying the new conditions for maintaining radial profiles of gas holdup while scaling up. It can also be implemented to quantify the effect of various variables on their hydrodynamic parameters. Gamma Ray Densitometry (GRD), a non-invasive radioisotope based technique, was developed and demonstrated to montior [sic]on-line the conditions for the scale-up, flow regime and spouted beds operation. The solids holdup in spout region increases with axial height due to movement of solids from the annulus region. However, solids velocity in the spout region decreases with axial height. In the annulus region the solids move downward as a loose packed bed and the solids velocity and holdup do not change with axial height. Using factorial design of experiments it was found that solids density, static bed height, particle diameter, superficial gas velocity and gas inlet diameter had significant effect on the identification of spout diameter. Flow regimes in spouted bed were determined with the help of optical probes, pressure transducers and GRD. It was found that the range of stable spouting regime is higher in 0.152 m beds and the range of stable spouting decreases in the 0.076 m beds. The newly developed non-invasive radioisotope technique (GRD) was able to successfully identify different flow regimes and their transition velocities besides scale-up conditions and operation"--Abstract, page iii.

Book excerpt: The scale-up effect on the hydrodynamics of gas-solids circulating fluidized bed riser reactors of different riser diameters was systematically studied in two 10 m high, 76 mm and 203 mm internal diameter risers by measuring the pressure drops, solids holdup, particle velocity, and solids flux with pressure transducers, a reflective-type fiber optic concentration-probe, a five-fiber optic velocity probe and a non-isokinetic sampling probe. A large number of measurements from the two risers with special design features of solids inlet valve make it possible to obtain information over a wide range of riser operating conditions. The similarities and differences in the flow behaviours of the two risers are clearly observed. Solids concentration increases with the increase of riser diameter, while the cross-sectional average particle velocity decreases somewhat for the larger riser. Meanwhile, a larger riser has steeper radial profiles for solids concentration, particle velocity and solids flux at each axial level. Asymmetry of the radial profiles of solids concentration and particle velocity at both entrance and exit regions are also observed. Such asymmetry is much stronger with higher flux. For both risers, the flow development in the riser centre is nearly instantaneous at the riser bottom under all operating conditions and there is no significant difference for the two risers in the center region throughout the riser. On the other hand, in the wall region, the flow development slows down for both risers, and such a slow down is much more significant for the larger riser. In the wall region, the solids holdup of the 8 inch riser is higher than that of the 3 inch riser, but the particle velocity is lower. The downflow solids flux at the wall of the larger riser is higher. The solids inventory and riser diameter appears to have little influence on the shape of the axial profile, but the average solids holdup is higher with higher solids inventory. The maximum of operable solids fluxes increases with the increase of solids inventory and decreases with the increase of riser diameter. Increasing solids flux also slows down the flow development, but increasing superficial gas velocity makes the flow development faster. Based upon the theoretical analyses and the systematic experimental data obtained in this study, a series of correlations is proposed to predict the radial profiles of particle velocity and solids holdup for the CFB riser reactors. In all locations measured, there was a clear dependence between the local particle velocity and solids concentration of both risers. Gas distribution and particle aggregation are considered the key factors that affect the local hydrodynamics in the twin-riser system. The information obtained from this study could be beneficial, especially for FCC industrial design and operation.

Book excerpt: Commercial ebullated bed reactors (EBRs) are three-phase fluidized bed systems used for hydroprocessing (upgrading) of bitumen, a major Canadian resource. The objective of this thesis is to improve the understanding of the hydrodynamics of the EBRs through a combination of experimental investigation and CFD modeling. The experiments were conducted in a transparent cold-flow pilot scale reactor (inner diameter of 15.2 cm and total height of 2.2 m and were focused on the most important parameter in the design and operation of fluidized bed systems, i.e., the overall (average) gas hold-up. The pilot scale setup was operated in both two-phase (gas-liquid) and three-phase (gas-liquid-solid) modes in order to investigate the fluid dynamics in the bed and the freeboard regions present in EBRs. In two-phase flow mode, experiments were performed with and without internal gas/liquid separators (recycle cups connected to a recycle line). The recycle cups were fabricated on the basis of designs proposed in the patent literature using a desktop 3-D printer. Different concentrations of ethanol were added to distilled water in order to reproduce the conditions of high gas hold-up and foaming frequently observed in commercial EBRs. The two-phase systems were also simulated with the Euler-Euler model using a finite volume method in the OpenFOAM toolbox. The average bubble size is a key input to this model and must be representative of the physical system. Provided this condition is met, the Euler-Euler model can predict the average gas hold-up under conditions of homogeneous (dispersed) two-phase flow to within 10% of the experimental values, regardless of the mode of operation (co-current vs. bubble column). Predictions of the gas hold-up under conditions of co-current heterogeneous two-phase flow are, however, less accurate (22% average error) - a result likely linked to limitations of the available empirical swarm correction models. Experiments in the systems with recycle cups showed that the performance of the cups in gas/liquid separation deteriorated in foaming systems. Also increasing the inlet liquid flow rate and/or recycle liquid flow increased the amount of entrained gas in the recycle stream. Simulation of these experiments highlighted the strengths and limitations of the Euler-Euler model. As far as three-phase systems are concerned, a meta-analysis of a large body of published data produced a set of empirical correlations for predicting the overall gas hold-up data for systems operating with water and spherical particles. Experiments conducted to investigate the effect of particle wettability on the gas hold-up in a three-phase fluidized bed demonstrated the limitations of such an empirical approach. For the system operating with hydrophilic particles, gas hold-up values of up to 15% were predicted with less than 25% error by the most accurate correlations. For the system of hydrophobic particles, however, the correlations failed in prediction of gas hold-up and the average error was more than 56%. Experiments demonstrated that rendering the particles hydrophobic decreased the gas hold-up by more than 20%. This was found to be the result of larger bubble size distribution in the bed of hydrophobic particles. In these systems, adhesion of bubbles to particles formed bubble-particle agglomerates with less apparent density than bare particles. Such gas-padded particles have less ability to penetrate and break-up the bubbles. Consequently, the average bubble size was larger in the bed of hydrophobic particles and also in the freeboard region above the bed. According to the semi-empirical models on foam height dynamics, steady state foam thickness is inversely proportional to the bubble diameter. Therefore, foam thickness is expected to be smaller for the system of hydrophobic particles. The foam thickness measurements in this study were consistent with the findings of the semi-empirical models.

This is performed by combining Digital Industrial X-ray Radiography (DIR) and Particle Tracking Velocimetry (PTV) techniques. This work also make possible the development of three-dimensional (3-D) V[subscript LL] measurements that can be taken in TBRs. Measurements taken through both the combined and the novel technique, once validated, were found to be comparable to another technique (a two-point fiber optical probe) currently being developed at Missouri University of Science and Technology. The results from this study indicate that, for a gas-liquid-solid type bed, the measured V[subscript LL] can have a maximum range that is between 35 and 51 times that of its superficial liquid velocity (V[subscript SL]). Without the existence of gas, the measured V[subscript LL] can have a maximum range that is between 4 and 4.7 times that of its V[subscript SL]. At a higher V[subscript SL], the particle tracer was greatly distributed and became carried away by a high liquid flow rate. Neither the variance nor the range of measured V[subscript LL] varied for any of the replications, confirming the reproducibility of the experimental measurements used, regardless of the V[subscript SL]. Book excerpt: "Given their efficiency and capital cost reduction, bubble/slurry bubble column reactors are the reactors of choice for Fischer-Tropsch (FT) synthesis, offering clean alternative fuels and chemicals. FT synthesis is an exothermic process that requires many heat exchanging tubes in order to remove heat efficiently and maintain the desired temperature and isothermal operating condition. The impact of the heat exchanging tubes (internals) on the hydrodynamics is not fully understood. Reliably designing and scaling up bubble column reactors requires proper understanding of hydrodynamics, as well as heat and mass transfer parameters. The main objective of this work is to advance the understanding of the effect of internals (25% covered cross-sectional area to meet FT needs) on hydrodynamics (gas holdup distribution, 3D liquid velocity, Reynolds stresses, turbulent kinetic energy, eddy diffusivity, etc.) in bubble columns. Single-source y-ray Computed Tomography (CT) and Radioactive Particle Tracking (RPT) were used for the first time to study the effect of dense internals and gas velocity on the phase holdup distribution and radial profiles, liquid velocity field and turbulent parameter profiles. The main findings obtained for the first time in this study can be summarized as follows: [I] The presence of internals at a given superficial gas velocity causes: [a] An increase in gas holdup and the axial centerline liquid velocity [b] A sharp decrease in turbulence parmeters [II] The increase in superficial gas velocity in the presence of internals causes: [a] An increase in gas holdup, axial centerline liquid velocity and turbulent parameters"--Abstract, leaf iii.

(APCI) to advance the understanding of the Fischer-Tropsch (FT) slurry bubble column reactor hydrodynamics for proper design and scale-up via advanced diagnostic techniques have been accomplished successfully despite the unexpected challenging technical difficulties in implementing the advanced techniques in high pressure stainless steel slurry bubble column. In this work, a detailed review of the aspects of high pressure phenomena of bubbles in liquids and liquid-solids suspension was performed. All the challenging technical problems mentioned above were resolved and the advanced measurement techniques were successfully used in this project. The effects of reactor pressure, superficial gas velocity, solids loading, and liquid physical properties on the overall gas holdup, holdups distribution, recirculation velocity, turbulent parameters, bubble dynamics (size and rise velocity) were investigated via advanced measurement techniques that includes optical probe, Laser Doppler Anemometry (LDA), Computed Tomography (CT), Computer Automated Radioactive Particle Tracking (CARPT). The findings are discussed and analyzed in this report. In attempt to advance the design and scale-up of bubble columns, new correlations have been developed based on a large bank of data collected at a wide range of operating and design conditions. These correlations are for prediction of radial gas holdup profile, axial liquid velocity profile, overall gas holdup based on Neural Network and gas-liquid mass transfer coefficient. Despite the noticeable advances made on FT SBCR as a part of this project, there are still many parameters and challenging issues that need to be further and properly investigated and understood before this technology will be readily used for alternative fuel development technology.
